. @Kristiann_NZ of @INGSciAdvice opens the session by presenting the context of #SDGs, #EDI, of establishing regional chapters like #INGSA_NA18, and of opening #scienceadvice worldwide to groups incl national orgs, #Francophonie, groups like @IIASAVienna @OECD @aaas @ESOF_eu

Regional chapters have a governance structure from that region, incl key academic leaders, policy leaders, students, and more ➡️ who develop work plan projects collaboratively. This drives #CapacityBuilding for #scienceadvice in these regions

#scienceadvice is not an exact science but is a team sport. Its ecosystem is critical in Canada 🇨🇦, where we are still building it, with colleagues and partners like @RSCTheAcademies, @sciencepolicy, and @DSP_SPE. Challenges & opportunities are intertwined - @ChiefSciCan

Dr. Nemer hopes to be the first of many in the position of @ChiefSciCan, and looks to the role of science in the world ahead of @g7 #G7 and the role Canada can play in this global goal #INGSA_NA18

Gordon McBean @ICSUnews discusses how @INGSciAdvice can address global challenges through #scienceadvice ➡️ it's complex and includes many players, but it is necessary to address these issues globally to have impact locally #INGSA_NA18

Borough councillor @ValPatreau came into #policy as a #scientist and represented @Val_Plante on this panel #INGSA_NA18 ➡ it is v difficult in day-to-day to link to #scienceadvice, not sure where to start esp if advice #knowledge #evidence is needed quickly

. @ValPatreau - public finance is also not unlimited, not all science can be funded and so it is in our interest to interact in #scipol & #scienceadvice to ensure that there is positive impact on all sides #INGSA_NA18 👉 + must break down silos, need multidisciplinarity

. @SciChefQC congratulates @ValPatreau to have run for office as a #scientist - the great majority of elected officials do their very best to represent the interests of their citizens, and given short time frame for #decisionmaking the integration of #evidence is admirable

. @MadameCosinus asks: how do we transform punctual opportunities and build #capacity for #scienceadvice moving fwd? G McBean @ICSUnews says scientists need to be encouraged to #scicomm and inform society, so that the public will support role of #science in #decisionmaking

. @ChiefSciCan mentions the value-added of #scientists engaging with the public #scicomm, that we need to connect the dots and inform not just on the science itself but also on why science is so important to society #INGSA_NA18

This is a long-term investment, #capacitybuilding occurs in the long term, says @SciChefQC. @MollyShoichet adds punctual #scienceadvice must be balanced w/ sage advice ➡ building a network of advisors is critical to provide informed advice in time for #decisionmaking #INGSA_NA18

Jeff Reading @SPH_Iloilo is chair in #peerreview at @CIHR_IRSC and stresses the quality of science that comes out of merging #community and #science ➡ by giving bridge funding on the condition of #scicomm and #participatoryscience has brought #knowledge to #action #INGSA_NA18

Abderrahmne Rida @auf_org adds that training of #NextGeneration in university must reflect the job market and research funding, we must adapt our training to these contexts... "ce sont des questions que l'on doit poser pour nos jeunes chercheurs"

.@ChiefSciCan says important to understand science advisors are not policymakers, and the responsibility cannot lie entirely on #scienceadvice. @SciChefQC adds, must remember distinction btw advocace and advice or we can lose credibility. @MollyShoichet adds, we are nonpartisan

... the responsibility may therefore lie more in the communication of the importance of #science and #evidence and make plain to #policymakers the consequences of different options presented in #scienceadvice in broader context of the decisions that must be made #INGSA_NA18

. @MehrdadHariri @sciencepolicy asks how we ensure #scienceadvice remains even under government changes - @SciChefQC & @ChiefSciCan both note we need to ensure these ecosystems are well supported and well appreciated by the public that are served by the government #INGSA_NA18
