There’s an endless stream of idiotic, corrupt, and prejudiced things Trump does and says. It overwhelms the narrative until nothing matters. But there are threads we have to hold onto if we want to make it out of this thing and actually improve this country. 1/
First of all, there is a problem with fascism in this country. It’s always been there, but the nation has largely denied its existence because it’s difficult. There are Americans who support it and are invigorated by it, especially if it’s hidden inside patriotism. 2/
That faux-patriotism is hollow and used to hide fascism, racism, misogyny, and economic manipulation. Waving a flag is the easiest way to push a bad idea, and Trump exhibits this every single day. 3/
The Republican Party’s espoused principles are meaningless. They don’t care about deficits, national security, family values, working class people. This presidency has proven that explicitly and we can never let those myths exist ever again. 4/
Racism isn’t an action, it’s a worldview. Trump constantly says he isn’t racist, but he sees minorities as criminals who don’t work hard and don’t deserve empathy or help. It isn’t just slurs, it’s perception and rationalization. 5/
We cannot trust those with political motivations to perform their duty. Segments of the government charged with keeping someone like Trump in line are constantly betraying their duty simply because they want to play a political game. 6/
What we think is immutable and objective never was. Society and laws and politics are constructions that only exists as long as everyone agrees to play by arbitrary agreed upon rules. When they don’t they can do anything as long as no one stops them. 7/
Our media doesn’t work. As long as this is a profit game it’s going to be a soap opera that never addresses public need. Trump is right when he says the media needs him. He’s right because this isn’t a system tuned to betterment but entertainment. 8/
Our economic system is set up to preference the already-wealthy and corporations. It isn’t working fairly and it corrodes duty and empathy. The end result was always going to be Donald Trump, who lacks duty and empathy. 9/
It is an onslaught of signals and stories and indignities, but it boils down to a large and dire crisis. We have to start looking at the bigger picture instead of just staring into the maw of madness and chaos. 10/10
