1/ American thinking and liberal people: "USA", "Brazil", "Germany", "Canada" are artificial constructs of the modern nation-State. They don't exist in the soil you walk. Different strains of nationalism are ideological bodies provided to you to create a false sense of belonging.
2/ A Cherokee, Diné, Cree, Crow, Blackfoot descendants have very little in common (culturally and in terms of interests) with white evangelicals living in the same state, perhaps.
3/ African Americas are just recently engaging in conversation with Latin American immigrants: up to quite recently, they saw each other as enemies. They were encouraged to "other" each other. To pigeon-hole these four peoples into a common national identity is manipulation.
4/ The people who support and voted for Trump and support racist, rapist and murderous administrations at all levels do NOT belong to the same identity unit as you. You owe them NOTHING. They are the "other".
5/ Face them as a little country inside your country because that's what it is, since countries, as you know them, are artificial inventions of modernity. They are the other and this other means to harm you.
6/ The idea that every society has 30% of authoritarians is misreading of primary sources in evolutionary psychology that is really not that great methodology-wise. The 30% identified behaviors are being taken as by-proxy indicators of authoritarianism.
7/ Forget that. You have a known cluster of enemies in the USA. You owe them nothing and they do owe you a lot. It is absolutely impossible to negotiate an understanding with them. Their ancestors stole land and they will die before sharing it.
8/ Watch out for demagogues who will try to put you all in the same identity. "All in the name of the nation". You probably already read that "that" America never existed in the first place. Find your folks. Pick your battles.
