My understanding of this is ever so slightly different to Pete. Ministers were hoping EU would only offer 2-4 weeks; but that was seemingly blown out of the water yesterday when Tusk said he will accept UK request for extension 1/
Although he didn't say "UK request for 3 months", the fact Tusk suggested written procedure led many of us to conclude it would be for a maximum of 3 months (Heads meet only necessary if there's strongly opposing views). France still grandstanding so a EUCO still def possible 2/
Think where there is UK lobbying now is to try & ensure that the 31 Jan date isn't mentioned. If it is, that's where there's real potential of quick movement towards an election. Of course if France doesn't back down, that could result in a shorter date being offered too ENDS
