Week 57 - 19/06/2022:

#ReceiptKeepers Streisand Effect thread on massive Johnson/Carrie #Cronyism scandal.

1) Times print edition features scoop reporting Johnson had tried to install his then-mistress Carrie into a £100,000 p/y job as Chief of Staff:
2) The huge story then mysteriously disappears from The Times and other locations repeating the accusations, as reported in The New European:…
3) @thetimes Journo behind the scoop, Simon Walters, says "I stand by the story 100%", and that he was in comms with No.10, Ben Gascoigne, Mrs Johnson's spokeswoman - none offered an on-record denial.

Rumours of a super-injunction against publication...…

🔴 Yesterday, the Court of Appeal refused to block the Home Office’s deportation of asylum seekers to #Rwanda.

The first flight is scheduled to leave tonight, at 9:30pm, as human rights lawyers battle to stop the removals.
It was also reported that two last-ditch attempts to halt the flight had been rejected, with the Home Office admitting that there is a risk the flight could be cancelled anyway, after legal challenges meant that fewer than 10 people are expected to board…
A source told Playbook that, due to individual case challenges brought against the government, “just seven” people were due to board, and that an ongoing “legal merry go-round” could well mean the “removal of every single last person” from the flight.…

The 2019 Conservative Party leadership contest saw Boris Johnson emerge as the winner, a year after he resigned as Foreign Secretary – in a disagreement with Cabinet colleagues over Brexit strategy.
Johnson was appointed Prime Minister by Elizabeth II on July 24, having given an untested assurance that he commanded a majority in the House of Commons. Johnson was widely distrusted, due to his serial dishonesty and incompetence, plus racist, sexist, and homophobic comments.

Too often govt ministers & MP are allowed to get away with the absurd claim that - on #COVID19 & #Brexit - the govt/#BorisJohnson “got all the big calls right”

Here @skysarahjane gives a masterclass in challenging this narrative (with MP @PeterBoneUK)
And this by @vicderbyshire

Another masterclass showing journalists how to hold the powerful to account

MPs are trained on ways not to answer uncomfortable questions

One method loved by many is to keep talking

A mute button is very useful here
“This will also do great damage to organisations like the BBC!”

In response to journalistic scrutiny, the govt often accuse the journalist, programme or even channel of bias

As we’ve seen with the sell off of @Channel4, these are not just hollow threats

ARTE, a public TV channel, has visited #Hull and #Grimsby. They have spoken to people & walked the streets. I will try & highlight some of it below.

Please, this is what @BBCNews & @BBCPanorama need to do.

Talk. To. Real. People.
The '22 report focuses on & speaks to fishermen as hopeful, core supporters of Brexit, Catching up with them, so to speak.
They describe their hopes for Brexit, then show us a fish auction at Grimsby. Now, almost all the fish auctioned there is from Iceland.Delivered by lorry.
A fish'n'chip shop, now almost all of the fish served is from Iceland, too, at almost double the price (£140->£220). The price for peas has gone up, bc there are no EUworkers to harvest. It's impossible to pass this on to customers. "This is Grimsby." So they reduce portions.

THREAD: #Rwanda, is it the best choice?

As we have all had had time to mull over the extraordinary revelations from last week, we thought it might be now a good time to dissect through some of the issues
This thread will focus on Rwanda in relation to the #PritiPatel deal. 1/
Most of you will have heard of #Rwanda from "Hotel Rwanda" a film that tells a bit about the Genocide that happened in the country in 1994 - in 100 days between April-July - >800,000 Tutsi people were killed in a national Genocide.
Rwanda has been rebuilding itself ever since. 2/
Why is it important that we dissect this deal from the #Rwanda angle?

Well put simply - its because the British gov #BorisJohnson #PritiPatel are deliberately not telling you, if they did, most Britons would be appalled & disgusted at how bad the scheme is for RW & refugees. 3/

🧵1/12 #BorisJohnson & #PritiPatel will today announce their plans to send people seeking asylum in the UK to #offshoredetention camps in #Rwanda, to try & deter #refugees from seeking protection in the UK. Cruelty is the point of this policy. Here's why this will fail...
2/12 Johnson & Patel were inspired by Australia's brutal & widely condemned offshore detention camps on Nauru & Papua New Guinea. Conditions for 3,127 people in those camps were deliberately dangerous & inhumane & led to suicides, avoidable deaths & abuse of children by guards.
3/12 This didn't deter people from seeking asylum in Australia. In the following year, the numbers of people arriving by boat stayed the same & the camps were quickly overcrowded. Australia has now abandoned this policy & most people detained are now in the USA or Australia.

Not quite - certainly not with this new British deal … and below is why!

Why is UK seeking to outsource its immigration? Because the British Gov is tries to please racists in the UK.
Rwanda saying “yes” gives #BorisJohnson green light to legislate racially motivated laws in Uk
2/ Secondly, the decision and agreement is likely motivated by money - rwanda stands to make money per unit person deported to Kigali. This is NOT about compassion and solidarity with refugees, but rather a business venture at the expense of asylum seekers lives and wishes!
3/ Lastly, Rwandans themselves were beneficiary of asylum seeker and refugee laws in 1994, kagame himself fled to Uganda, millions others fled across the world with danger journeys: they weren’t turned away and sent 6,000miles away from their intended destination: Belgium etc🤷🏾‍♂️
