We’ve published our latest data on the social impacts of the coronavirus, for the period 3-13 March, at which point most restrictions and guidance to manage the spread of #COVD19 in Great Britain had been lifted.

See our thread for the key findings⬇️

33% of adults reported being very or somewhat worried about the pandemic’s impact on their lives right now. This is the lowest level since the pandemic began.

At its highest (over the period 20 to 30 March 2020), this was 86% .
60% of adults travelled to work exclusively, between 3-13 March 2022.

This is the highest proportion since we began measuring this in May 2020, when it was 29%.

1) Although Quebec continues to lead the country in the number of #COVD19 deaths per million population, other provinces are now beginning to catch up, underscoring the gravity of this terrible fifth wave. In this thread, I will discuss what this means for Canada and Quebec.
2) First, though, I would like to recognize a sombre milestone crossed: Quebec on Wednesday declared a total of 13,009 COVID deaths — by far, the highest of any province. The chart below shows how the current wave of #pandemic deaths has surpassed last January’s.
3) But as I noted in my last thread — confirmed by reporting by the Canadian Press — the wave of #COVID deaths in Quebec has exposed a new fatal blind spot in the government’s handling of the #pandemic: the tardy 3rd dose vaccination of elderly shut-ins.

This tweet thread is about the results from the second serosurvey done in the #Karnataka state. Ahead of sharing the link, some caveats first.
1. The @DHFWKA has used the data from this round of serosurvey in late March to update testing and surveillance strategies.

2. The study found Lower levels of IgG seroprevalence, mostly due to antibody waning.
3. A substudy was done to confirm the antibody waning. This study was delayed due to rapid surge of cases in April.
4. We found near 0 prevalence of active cases during mid-February 2021.

5. There was a subsequent surge seen in Karnataka state due to a mix of alpha, delta which was picking up speed in April, and a large susceptible population were infected.
6. Results from the substudy on antibody waning was necessary for releasing the final report & paper.

1/4 The #PHAC-@McMasterU longer-range modelling forecast for March 26, 2021 continues to play out in the data we are seeing now. Current surveillance data (red dots up to April 9th) are plotting along the strong resurgence trajectory. Image
2/4 The March 26th forecast accounted for spread of #VariantsOfConcern, warning that stronger public health measures and strict adherence with individual precautions were needed to counter more transmissible #COVD19 variants.
3/4 The current trajectory reaffirms that measures in place two weeks ago were not stringent enough to prevent the strong resurgence we are seeing now. #COVID19Vaccines are starting to help, but our efforts are crucial as they roll out

Beste Peter,
Zoals de Engelsen zeggen "let me count the ways in which you are wrong".

Super disappointed in this #netneutrality column by @ShiraOvide feat @ceciliakang. It misses the mark badly in so many ways. nytimes.com/2021/02/25/tec…
@ShiraOvide @ceciliakang 2 focus on the no blocking, throttling & discrimination mandates really is seeing half the story. What the Trump @FCC did in 2017, in addition 2 repealing the #netneutrality rules, was to abdicate its legal authority 2 protect consumers & competition in the #broadband market.
@ShiraOvide @ceciliakang @FCC That legal authority (Title II) gives the @FCC the power 2 protect consumers, promote competition & close the digital divide. Every action the @FCC takes 2 strengthen #Lifeline or give $$$ for rural #broadband deployment is on shaky legal ground without Title II authority.

Additional context as why I have more optimistic view of variants of #COVD19 over the next six weeks across North America/Northern Europe

Host-Agent-Environment is commonly used framework for infectious diseases

Host -- us
Agent -- SARS-CoV-2
Environment -- conditions around us
With introduction of the #COVID19 variants

Agent -- Increased transmissibility with variants (more likely to bind receptor cells, higher VL, ? longer infectiousness)

Host -- increased immunity, ? increase in contacts with release of restrictions

Environment -- seasonal changes
Many models seem to directly assume that increased transmissibility will increase transmission and will increase case counts at population level.

But transmissibility is not the only determinant of transmission. Ie, see the epidemiological triad from two tweets ago.

The gaggle of rushed-to-market #covd19 #vaccines constitute unprecedented mass human medical exeperimentation.
UK Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Authority (MHRA) is "urgently seekimg an Artificial Intelligence (AI) software tool to process *the expected high volume of Covid-19 vaccine Adverse Drug Reaction (ADRs)*."
Because "its planned procurement process for the SafetyConnect programme..would not have concluded by vaccine launch" (i.e., safety testing was rushed and skipped), MHRA is concerned about the "direct threat to patient life and public health" from these ADRS.

Meanwhile in #France,
"the peak of this second wave is over"

(according to the President in his Adress to the Nation):
Wait... "the peak is over" doesn´t mean "it´s back to normal"!

Confinement will only fall on December 15,
if there´s less than 5.000 new cases a day.
(today it´s ~9.000).

France is disappointed.🙁

Although they certainly can make it happen.
Meanwhile in #Switzerland:
(excess mortality of the second wave is significant)

Good news: fastest decrease in infections happens in the worst hit areas now.

UPDATE: The #coronavirus case fatality rate continues to drop. Here's one reason that doesn't get a lot of attention: We're getting much better at triage. During the first few months, we really couldn't tell which hospitalized patients were going to get worse. That has changed:
Why were we bad at this? Many with #COVD19 suffer from 'silent hypoxemia,' where oxygen levels appear incompatible with life yet patients feel no symptoms. The President may have had a subtle, less aggressive variation of this when he was airlifted to Walter Reed but felt fine.
Vital signs have proven unreliable for effective triage, so we've turned to lab tests for help. One that quickly emerged as a potentially-helpful candidate was interleukin-6 (IL-6), a marker of inflammation that is usually absent (or present in low levels) in blood.

Often asked for my opinion of the latest #COVD19 therapeutic. Yesterday it was the antibody cocktail. Here's how I think about this stuff:
For any new treatment, I want to know if it's 1) safe and 2) effective. I also look at distribution mechanisms. Do we have a way to get this thing to the people who need it? In many cases, the answer is no.
I'm not bullish on antibody cocktails because there's a mismatch between supply & demand. Urgent care clinics don't want to administer cocktails because the infusion is time-consuming and reimbursements are low. Primary care clinics will feel a similar crunch. So what happens?

Trump is saying China "released" #COVID19.

1) Although Quebec reported a dip in the number of #COVID19 hospitalizations Tuesday, the number of intensive care unit stays has risen steadily in the past seven days. In this thread, I will try to explain what this means despite continuing information gaps from the government.
2) For eight days, Quebec has not released regional or neighborhood breakdowns of #COVD19 infections, attributing the information blackout to the transfer of data to a new computer system. Texas used the same excuse, but for only two days. kens5.com/article/news/h…
3) As a result, Quebecers have no idea whether the #pandemic is growing or subsiding in their neighborhoods. Perhaps for these reasons nearly one in two Quebecers surveyed in June suspected the government was withholding information from them. cbc.ca/news/canada/mo…

1) In a shocking development in the #pandemic in Quebec, Montreal public health authorities announced Saturday they’ve launched #COVID19 investigations into at least five bars since July 1 where eight people were contagious. In this thread, I'll explain the full import of this.
2) What is truly disturbing is the speed with which the #COVID cases sprung up so soon after Quebec allowed bars to reopen on June 25 — despite a mountain of evidence that drinking establishments are breeding grounds for the highly contagious #coronavirus.
3) What’s also worrisome is Quebec health minister Christian Dubé (@cdube_sante) let bars stay open even though he cited a New York Times article about the huge risks they pose in the #pandemic — and even after the #COVID19 outbreak at the Mile Public House pub in Brossard.

As #COVID19 cases are found to spread, #Melbourne (city of ~5 million) tries to contain them by going into #Lockdown.
(The interview features the idea of a dedicated #Quarantine building - that would actually help, I guess)...
"People acting as if the pandemic was over was 'not the answer, it is part of the problem' ".

"The virus had leaked from postcodes already under the stay-at-home orders to other parts of #Melbourne."
(and beyond, it is feared).
Due to #Melbourne's outbreak, neighbouring South Australia is about to completely close it's borders to #Victoria.

(Nearly) no exceptions. And those essential few who are allowed in, will have to wear facemasks the entire time...

has specific rules:
"Those who return from international risk areas (out of Germany) or whose Corona-Warning App has alerted them, need to report to authorites"

In fact, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's Corona-ordinance really prohibits entry of people from international risk areas AND german risk areas as well.
It's just not prominently featured on their websites.

1/. The Dutch strategy for dealing with #coronavirus mirrors that being attempted by @BorisJohnson’s govt & is described as “a masterclass in framing & gaslighting.”

But in recent days, leaks & good journalism are exposing the Dutch #HerdImmunityScandal.

2/. On 16 March, PM Rutte gave a National Address.

He did not talk about suppressing #COVD19 as most countries were doing, but he did mention #HerdImmunity.

On 4 June, the PM said: “I did not make a speech about herd immunity. I have no knowledge of it.”
3/. Calculations that without suppression measures, 100,000 people could die, saw the govt shifting its description of #HerdImmunity from a “strategy” to an “outcome”.

Yet spokespeople still talked about “allowing #COVID19 to spread through the populace”.
