I have been trying to get answers from top tier candidates for several months on their stance on #disability. #HillaryClinton had broad policy & #disabled people on her team in 2016. ONE in FOUR Americans has a disability. We are THE largest minority in America.
For those who need a template for a candidate on #disability, here was #HillaryClinton in 2016. We should expand on that, not move backwards.…
And there is #HillaryClinton's archived policy, which included #autism, #Alzheimers, #disabilityrights, #mentalhealth, universal healthcare for all, #HIV/#AIDS, paid medical leave, Social Security and Medicare protections, addictions & substance abuse.

As a disabled woman & wheelchair user, I’ve been fending off my insurance company’s cuts for years. Today, they finally got a judge to side with them—and now I can’t go back to college next semester. The American healthcare system has just, quite literally, ruined my future.
What does it say about our country when a for-profit insurance company can tell me, my doctors, and several independent medical experts that we’re all wrong about my care needs, thereby preventing me from ever living independently? #CripTheVote
They’ve nearly cut my care hours in half. This will prevent me from having an aide help me get dressed, shower, go to the bathroom, etc. At this point, my family and I are talking about what will happen if my Mom has to quit her job to stay home and take care of me. #CripTheVote

1/I know folks are nervous or frustrated with calling for #impeachment. Many would prefer to focus on policy, organizing, and GOTV in 2020. I think we can do both. Also saying, 'We just need to vote Trump out' is not going to be as easy as folks think. Why? Voter Suppression.
2/I firmly believe that Trump and members of the GOP have every intention of continuing to suppress the vote in 2020. They've already started. How? Let me count the ways! Let's start in FL. Florida's Amendment 4 expands voting rights to as many as 1.4 million reentrants.
3/ The FLGOP lead House proposee that those with "felony records" need "to fully pay off all pay court fines and fees — including fees that were not imposed by a judge as part of their sentence — before they can regain their voting rights."…

Three weeks ago I was abruptly informed that my internship would be ending early as a result of the "unpredictable nature" of my chronic illness/disability...

Hold tight, y'all. This is gonna be a thread. 1/?
Even tho there is only one month left in the semester.
Even tho my clinical skills are consistently referred to as excellent.
Even tho I was the first social worker and first intern to present at Grand Rounds in my department and my recommendations are already being implemented.
But apparently my track record for pushing back against oppressive policies matters more than my skills. And my disability is an easy target.

So in my city #SSI pays $771 a month.
I was just informed that I don't qualify because although I make below the poverty level in annual income, that income makes me ineligible.

The SSI person was very nice as I coughed through our conversation, but it's over.
How is anyone supposed to live on this amount of money in a big city? It's beyond belief. Who sets these income levels? Where are #disabled people supposed to live? How are they supposed pay for a phone? Even a burner costs $25 a month. What about utilities?
The insanity is, I just qualified for #SNAP because I live below the poverty level, but that "entitlement" as the #SSI person explained, counts against your income limit. The woman was very nice & commiserative, but she closed out my file. My application for #Medicaid is pending.

How do we honor the our disabled elders & ancestors?

When I first found out that Carrie Ann Lucas @DisabilityCubed died 3 days ago, it was painful. Like countless of sick, chronically ill, and disabled people, she died at the hands of the medical industrial complex.
Carrie Ann created disability culture, family, and community. She lifted people up and defended their rights. She fought the system with every tool at her disposal. She loved her friends and family fiercely.
Stories can carry our history, joy, love & grief into the future. We can preserve Carrie Ann's crip wisdom by sharing stories about her. I'm delighted to publish 2 guest pieces for @DisVisibility by disabled parents about Carrie Ann, a badass unapologetic queer disabled mother.

Nearly *HALF* of the 700,000 people behind bars in U.S. jails -- many of them there because they can't afford money bail -- are people with mental illness.

via @SteveCollNY @NewYorker… #DisabledBehindBars #cripthevote
@SteveCollNY @NewYorker Note: It's not just people with mental illness being warehoused in U.S. jails (and prisons). It's people with disabilities broadly.

People behind bars in U.S. jails & prisons are more than 3x as likely to have a disability than the general population:…
Meanwhile: Poor conditions and inadequate access to health care & mental health treatment can not only exacerbate existing conditions -- but also cause disabilities & health conditions people didn't have prior to incarceration.

This has been the most frustrating day.
I have been working since I was 14.
I am now trying to apply for #disability--#SSDI.
It's a ridiculously arduous process meant to trip people up and keep desperate/sick/#disabled people from accessing help.

We must do better.
Since the #GOPTaxScam, my health insurance premium costs $1,978.10 PER MONTH for an HMO.
The cost of being sick in America.

That is just my premium--not the co-pays, not the cost of oxygen, hospital bed, Rxs.

I'm already bankrupt and soon The Wife will be as well.
My health insurance premium costs $24k a year.
That's more than I make as a writer.
How is this acceptable, America?
If I didn't have a partner, I would be on the street, paralyzed and sick.
Is this what we want for our most vulnerable people?

Not one person running for president in 2020 has a #disability platform thus far.
#HillaryClinton had one in 2016.
She had #disabled people on her staff.
She'd been addressing disability for decades.
She invited disabled people to speak at the Democratic National Convention.
One in five Americans has a disability, according to the CDC.
We are the country's largest minority.
Why aren't candidates falling all over themselves to reach out to us?
Because we have been rendered invisible.
That much change.
Some candidates are pushing #Medicare4All which we need in this country, but not one has addressed the huge gaps for coverage of the #disabled.

I wrote about how many women are impacted by #disability in this investigation for @damemagazine:…

A number have people have reached to ask about @NYGovCuomo's attack on #CDPA services and what it will mean for disabled New Yorkers. I'll try and cover it in the thread that follows. #CripTheVote
#CDPA or Consumer Directed Personal Assistance began in New York and was quickly copied across the country. It was designed by disabled people for disabled people to give us more control over or lives and the supports we used to live in the community. #CripTheVote
#CDPA makes disabled people the employer of the attendants who provide us services. It gives us control over hiring & firing as well as how and when it is provided. It lets us control who touches our bodies, who assists us with our most intimate needs and who doesn't #CripTheVote

REMINDER: Trump is nowhere close to done trying to dismantle Medicaid by fiat, after failing to get his cruel cuts through Congress.

A quick refresher on what “block-granting” Medicaid would mean and why it’s so dangerous.

1. “Block-grant” is code for converting a program from one that guarantees coverage to all who qualify, to one that helps fewer and fewer eligible people over time due to capped funding that declines year by year.

Here's what that would mean for Medicaid.
2. Medicaid is a federal-state program, meaning it’s partially funded by the federal government and partially by states. Currently the feds pick up a set percentage of states’ Medicaid costs.

Today, we're pleased to announce the 2018 Bitch 50, recognizing the most impactful creators, artists, and activists in pop culture whose imaginations extend beyond normalizing and affirming the same mainstream messages.
We honor @eveewing's work as a sociologist, professor, author, and poet, and her concise, witty, and often withering commentary on the communal toll of systemic racism.
Culture writer @IWriteAllDay_ created the Kent Test, inspired by the Bechdel Test, to evaluate the representation of women of color in media. Criteria includes “must not solely exist for the purpose of fetishization” and “must not be solely included for a male character's story.”

I'm thankful to still be alive.
I wasn't sure last Thanksgiving I would get here.
I'm thankful for my docs, my two nurse practitioners, my physical therapist who have made a harrowing year less so.
I am also grateful my story has helped others tell theirs.
This #Thanksgiving
I am thankful for all the love and kindness in my life and for the ability to love others in return.
There aren't really words to express how grateful I am for The Wife™️.
She's simply amazing. Smart, talented, hilarious. 19 years. Fabulous. 💜
This #Thanksgiving
I am thankful for my fam.
I see the stories on here of folks who can't handle their racist families or who are rejected for being queer/trans (as I was by my parents).
Thankful to have a family who are left political activists & #LGBTQ allies & who I love.

Thank you everyone who is coming to the Nov. 13 meeting to support me and other disabled voters who’ve been dismissed about inaccessibility. I had a disabled woman tell me she experienced discrimination in Fulton. I’ve heard from others. This is a huge issue. #CripTheVote #GApol
This is a list I wrote for an abled voter and shared with a Georgia councilman who wants to do better by disabled voters. Please use to see if a place is really accessible. If it’s not, file complaints because disabled people are ignored, dismissed and abused when we do complain.
This causes some to not vote, others to not complain. We’re focused on our safety in the moment, voting and leaving. I’ve explained to well-meaning poll workers that just because they don’t perceive/aren’t told of inaccessibility or discrimination doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen.

So my PT just texted me to tell me that @IBX is discharging me from physical therapy because their medical director thinks it is no longer medically necessary for me to have physical therapy.

I am still paralyzed and still have MS, but it's not medically necessary?
This is what sick people go through every day: fighting for the most basic services.

PT is essential for folks with neuro/muscular diseases.

I pay $1,978.10 PER MONTH for my health ins premium for an HMO because I am sick.
Now I can't get PT b/c it's not medically necessary?
This is everyone you know next year if you don't get to the polls and take a freaking busload of people with you.
We have to get the House back if we expect to live another year under this system that is crushing sick people every day.

Arlington Texas voting update on #Accessibility and early voting for #disabled voters.…

The update to this has my voting experience as a #DisabledVoter.

The place was accessible and catered to multiple types of disabilities including invisible disabilities.
Signage explaining the #disability rules. 9 flyers posted outside the door of the pool entrance, giving the rules of voting laws for mobility and other data.

.@Commish_Schmidt In these days of #VoterSuppression, we all need stories of public servants who are fighting it.

When I got another ballot app instead of my ballot, @Commish_Schmidt stepped in, made sure I got my ballot & that it got in before the deadline.

He saved my vote.
@Commish_Schmidt #Disabled voters are most likely to face #VoterSuppression and voter disenfranchisement.

We should not have to fight to vote.

The forms are hard to understand and make voting more difficult. But @Commish_Schmidt showed real concern for what disabled voters face.
@Commish_Schmidt Hopefully in the future @Commish_Schmidt and I can talk more about what can be done to make voting more accessible to the 1 in 5 voters with a #disability. This is a demographic that has yet to be addressed, but we are THE largest voting minority in the US.

A3. I want to say yes. But I do not see it here in North Texas.

And you see things like free/discounted @Uber & @Lyft but then they often can't accommodate your wheelchair or other mobility issues. #CripTheVote
A3. Plus, if you are forced to demand a provisional ballot, it often requires follow up for that vote to be counted. Where's my free/discounted ride then?

A3. People also tweet things meant to go wide but the link is in text in an image with no image description or hyperlink.

Okay so provisional ballot aren't *automatically* thrown away. (Never said they were but not the point.)

But they are thrown away if you can't do the follow-up legwork.

Some people literally can't. Or don't know.
And those tampering with voter registration know this. #GOTV
Who can't?

It once took me nine months of active coordination and effort to be treated by an oncologist.

Between transportation, being well enough to ride in the car & financial issues.
