The high intensity ensemble model forecasts for #CycloneFreddy #Freddy have always indicated the possibility of it turning and exiting before landfall.

And now the HRWF cyclone model is indicating this also.
However a very large cyclone sitting off the coast can still produce very large quantities of rain.

But the catastrophic rainfalls indicated yesterday 300-500mms of rain deep inland may not now eventuate.
The storm has experienced startling intensification over the past few hours in line with the model.

Long range forecasts show some unusual early season #Cyclone activity over the coming 16 days in the West Pacific and Bay of Bengal.

In particular a storm is shown developing in the Bay of Bengal - traversing the BoB before reversing direction and heading back due East.
The impact of this reversal is remarkable and has potentially positive results in relation to two cyclones which are shown here spinning up on either side of the Phillipines. At the end of this 16-day animation you can see them suddenly reversing direction and heading NE.
The cause of this unusual activity appears to be related to high temperatures/high pressure over the Arabian Sea. In this Water Vapour Transport animation you can see the forecast reversal of wind/water vapour direction taking place over Southern India 12-13 April.

Extremely heavy rainfall alert for #Chennai

Close to 200+ mm rainfall is expected in most places in the city overnight.

#ChennaiRains #ChennaiRain #ChennaiRains2021 #ChennaiFlood #Chennai1913 #chennaiairport #ChennaiCorporation #TamilNaduRains #TamilNadu #TamilnaduRainUpdate
I am still seeing messages where people are asking whether it would rain as it is being "hyped". Please note that if it doesn't happen we would be the happiest.

But unfortunately - the blogging community on the whole is of the same opinion that there would be heavy rains
Not only Chennai

#Kanchipuram #Chengalpattu #Kallakurichi #Villupuram #Cuddalore #Nagapattinam #Karaikkal #Pondicherry #Ranipet #Thiruvallur #Vellore and even #Krishnagiri should be on high alert as the system is expected to move inland

Now that the #rain has stopped for a while in #Chennai, it is time that we get to know what we can expect this week.

1. A Low-pressure area will likely form in the next 2 days in the Southeast #BayofBengal region.

2. Owing to favourable conditions this will further intensify.
3. Preliminary analysis suggests that this system will likely intensify as deep depression and would move towards Coastal #TamilNadu

4. Possibility of this system intensifying into a cyclone exists. Which means a named #cyclone is a possibility
5. Assuming that it becomes a named cyclone, this would be named "#Jawad" named by #SaudiArabia

6. The track that it is likely to take is that it will climb up Northwest - intensify near the coast and move lateral west in between #Chennai and #Pondicherry

@ipcc_ch reports that b/w 1971 & 2010, oceans absorbed over 90% of the heat gained by the planet due to #globalwarming. This led to #sealevel rise and has also resulted in higher frequency & intensity of #cyclones worldwide. #ClimateChange #MumbaiMustPrepare @mumbaismagic
Indian Ocean has also warmed but what is worrying is the higher rate of #warming in comparison to other global ocean basins. Data shows that Indian Ocean’s rapid basin-wide warming of ~1degC over the last 60 yrs exceeds that of the global average of ~0.7 degC. #MumbaiMustPrepare
Arabian Sea & Bay of Bengal have also seen consistent warming in past decades. The trend in rise in sea surface temperature for BoB has been 0.16C/decade & 0.18C/decade for AS. Arabian Sea indeed has been warming quite rapidly and impacts are for us to see. #MumbaiMustPrepare

Cyclone #Burevi to Cross Sri Lanka and Hit India’s Southern Tip on Thursday Night; Tamil Nadu, Kerala Under Alert

By- @deekshith_np

(📸: TWC Met Team)
On Wednesday night last week, #CycloneNivar drenched several parts of north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh. Exactly a week later, #CycloneBurevi is set to cause torrential downpour over southern Tamil Nadu and Kerala
#Burevi is a name suggested by the Maldives, as per the #cyclone naming guidelines set by the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO). #Burevi is not as strong as its predecessor, #Nivar, as the Bay of Bengal lacks the energy to feed the system further.

We are facing one more #cyclone today. So let me remind you. #Mangroves;

- acts as buffer & reduce impact of cyclones & #storm surge.
- they break the #wind force
- provide #habitat to #animals during cyclone or otherwise
- they reduce #pollution.

We just need to protect them.
So how it works. Mangroves create a maze & dense habitat. With species which are salt tolerant & have special adaptations. They act like buffer & which slow down wind & consume energy. So after passing, the storms get dampen. You must have read in ‘Theory of Vibration’.

50 years ago today was the Bhola cyclone, one of the deadliest tropical storms in world history. It killed up to half a million people in what was then East #Pakistan, and triggered the #Bangladesh liberation war
The Pakistani authorities were negligent & frankly unconcerned about the devastation in their eastern wing. (A bit like President Trump's response to #hurricane Maria in #PuertoRico). Weeks later they held the first democratic election in #Pakistan's history
East Bengali nationalists Awami League @albd1971 campaigned against the failures of the Pakistani state & won one of the most stunning democratic victories ever.

They are prop roots. In #mangrove #ecosystem they are adventitious support roots. They Grow down from lateral branches, in a way support trees, with doing other root functions. Additionally roots buffer against damage to coasts & enhance biodiversity & carbon sequestration.

A depression over southeastern & adjoining east-central Arabian Sea this morning will likely turn into a severe cyclonic storm #Nisarga by June 3…
By June 3, the storm is likely to hit coastal areas in northern Maharashtra & southern Gujarat b/w Harihareshwar in Raigad district and Daman, with wind speeds of 90-100 kmph & gusting 110 kmph. These regions are on pre #cyclone alert
Very-heavy to extremely-heavy rainfall is expected in parts of both of these states and fishers have been advised to stay away. This would be the 2nd cyclone to hit India this year, 13 days after the super cyclone #Amphan lashed parts of West Bengal & Odisha on May 20
