1/🧵 #COVID “Swiss Cheese” Model of Protection

Important in #Delta surge❗️

The protection you seek from #COVID19 is NOT “all or none.” It exists on a continuum. Each decision ⬆️ or ⬇️ your vulnerability to an evolving #virus 🦠.

2/ On a bus this week, the man next to me was huddle up, scared & covered. He said, “I’m petrified because I don’t have any antibodies yet, but I don’t want to be in an experiment.” I thought, “well, you’re consenting to an experiment by getting on a bus without #Vaccination.”
3/ He took a chance, and we all do. I’m not perfect at my protection plan either. At a public meeting this week, I took my mask off to speak & the person next to me promptly coughed. I though, “Unvaccinated?”

@Sketchplanator designed this original model for COVID risk reduction.

1/ A good decision by the Speaker and @ParliamentZim As legislators, we must be in the forefront of compliance to lockdown measures to mitigate the spread of Covid-19. Image
2/ As directed, MPs can use this opportunity to go to the ground in their constituencies, especially those who’ve never and galvanise Govt’s efforts to encourage and create awareness on the need to be vaccinated against Covid-19 as well as on the enhanced lockdown measures
3/ However this initiative must be implemented in a controlled and safe environment to prevent virus transmission. It is said that the Delta variant is more virulent and possibly remains airborne for a period, therefore gatherings as directed by @edmnangagwa must not be convened

Guys, you don't want this virus. I'm now on day 8 and I had to leave the breakfast table this morning because I don't have the strength to sit up.
It's not fun to be this sick, it's also not fun for your kids to have to deal with it. Especially over Christmas.
My entire body including my hair and my eyeballs HURTS. I can't stop coughing. Can't smell or taste anything. Have no appetite.

I want to share my story with you; I think given my last post it is important. I am a participant in a Phase 3 clinical trial for a #COVIDVaccine. I did not make the decision lightly; I am a wife and a mom to two young kids. Admittedly, my husband was not happy! #COVID19 1/18
I know that communities of color, and in particular, my community, the black community, has a myriad of reasons to not trust medicine, and to not trust this vaccine. My ancestors have been experimented on and have been hurt by doctors in the name of science. 2/18
For me, this was the most profound reason to join a trial; I wanted to be able to show my community that the vaccine is safe, and that this is a step we can all take to help curb the spread of #COVID19. I reached out to someone who was able to connect me with a study PI 3/18

1/ It's sad how quickly Covid patients are overwhelming hospitals across America.

I wanted to understand the scope so I searched local news sites around the country and found anecdote after anecdote illustrating the dire situation...

1/x With #COVID19 cases skyrocketing all over the US, holiday meals are going to be very dangerous. To show the risks of meeting indoors I used an #aerosol box model to estimate relative the risks.

Maybe this can help you re-think your plans to gather.

2/x The #WellsRiley model has been used for decades, was put online recently by @jljcolorado & others as a #COVID19 viral aerosol transmission tool. In July I re-wrote the model onto a different platform @Wavemetrics #IgorPro so I could manipulate faster.

3/x Modeled only room-mixed #aerosol (not droplet spray or aerosol plume; these add risk).

Results highlights:
- No matter the room size, infection for 10 people is at least 40% or much more
- If #superspreader there, everyone will be infected
- Outside, risk drops dramatically

Hospitals in Ohio are very busy right now. More than 3000 people are currently admitted in OH from #COVID19. While we have surge capacity and we are lucky our state has a strong system plan to take care of more people, this impacts health for anyone sick in Ohio. 1/10
The impact goes well beyond the health effects of #COVID19 itself on people and their loved ones. It isn't just about having room or staff to admit COVID patients. It is also about the care that all people who are hospitalized receive. 2/10
3000 extra people in the hospitals means that we are all working at our maximum capacity. It means that we have to rush from person to person as there are always many waiting to be seen. 3/10

So I became ill with #COVID19 4 months ago. I thought that I'd beaten it and started to feel better. I hadn't though. My condition worsened and I was very ill.
I had developed pneumonia and pleurisy after having #COVID19 and lve spent the last 4 months fighting this.
I've rebounded 5 times and as a result of this I've got scarring on my lungs and my heart is inflamed.

With #colleges reopening in the fall during the #COVID19 pandemic, we wanted to know:

What are students’ preferences and expectations for the fall semester?

THREAD🧵
Many #schools surveyed students earlier in the summer when evaluating reopening plans. However, the trajectory of #COVID19 looked very different than it does currently.

So, how have students been feeling recently?
We had 398 undergraduate @GeorgiaTechISyE students (incl. incoming freshmen >= 18 y.o.) complete our survey (~30% response rate)

~51 % of respondents were female students

~85 % were domestic students

~ 48% / 23% / 14%/ 15% were rising

2/ This is loss. This is loosing in OT with 38 seconds remaining on the clock, all the MVP players are in, but the other team intercepts and wins. The other team that won? Death. 5 nights in a row I battled the angel of death on someone very close to my age.
3/ 5 nights in a row I climbed on top of the bed in full PPE: gown, 3 masks, a face shield, goggles, and 2 pairs of gloves to physically try to circulate the epinephrine into your heart for it to restart.

It’s 100days tomorrow since my best mate of 21yrs sent me a series of whatsapp messages at 4am just before she was tubed. I’ve mostly gone with the ‘yep I’m fine’ line. In truth, it’s all felt a bit surreal going from ‘oh it’s ok she’ll just be tubed for a few days’, to sheer
horror when she crashed onto ecmo. By day 14 on ecmo and no improvement that went to a weird acceptance of the probable outcome. That became an ecmo Groundhog for 34days. A really dark few months, which has turned into extremely cautious hope in the last couple of weeks.
I wibbled a little bit yesterday when she thanked me for looking after her hubbie and toddler and that I was one of two ppl she called that night to ask to look out for them. Me and her brother. 🤷🏻‍♀️

1/ Q. Do face shields work & are they better than masks?

Most media attention has focused on the use of masks. We're here to report: Face shields are protective too!
2/ Face shields create a transparent rigid plastic barrier that covers the entire face from ear to ear & from forehead to the bottom of the chin.

The shield physically blocks viral entry (through eyes, nose, or mouth) & reduces auto-inoculation from touching one's face.
3/ Simulation studies indicate that face shields are effective at preventing inhalation of cough aerosol droplets, with one estimate showing 96% protection from viral exposure within 18 inches of a cough.
