The Amazon isn't the only region of the globe burning. From central Africa to the Arctic, fires are spreading to areas where they were once rarely seen. And they're growing in intensity, raising fears that climate change is exacerbating the danger. nyti.ms/2zthIEs
Though the Amazon is seen as vital to the Earth's atmosphere, forests in Alaska, Greenland and Siberia are as important to the global climate system as tropical rainforests. These arctic forests are now burning too, driven in part by rising temperatures. nyti.ms/2zvsMAA 
Arctic wildfires are particularly concerning. It is not just dried out trees or grassland burning, but peat, a dirt-like material in the ground itself that releases much more carbon dioxide when it burns than do trees per acre of fire. nyti.ms/2zvsMAA
Fires in the Amazon are deliberately set to clear land for agricultural use. The practice is driven by global demand for soybeans and cattle. The fires are likely to worsen in part because of demands for soybeans increased by the U.S. trade war with China. nyti.ms/2zvsMAA
