There's a seasonality to many respiratory #viruses. Will #SARSCoV2 [#COVID19] follow a similar pattern? We hope so BUT we don't really know. We know when air is humid / warm ➡️droplets gather more moisture ➡️too heavy to stay airborne / fall more quickly➡️transmission harder.
There was a significant correlation between #SARS cases & environmental temperature. A sharp rise or decrease in the environmental temperature related to the cold spell led to an increase of SARS cases because of the possible influence of the weather on the human immune system.
Plus the winter season has a profound effect on how human #genes work - this may explain why some illnesses are aggravated in the #winter. During cold, winter months, genes involved with #immunity & specifically #inflammation were more active. nature.com/articles/ncomm…
🥶 Plus cold air cools the nasal passage ➡️slows down mucus clearance. Viruses can now stick around for longer. Cold air is also linked to a decrease in the activity of #phagocytes. We spend more time indoors when the weather is cold: crowded spaces help viruses to spread.
💡But as #China & the rest of the Northern Hemisphere head into spring, the southern half [#Brazil #Argentina #Peru & most of South America, a third of Africa, all of Antarctica, all of #Australia] is headed into fall & winter so there could be increased transmission there.
⚠️We must plan for the unexpected & the possibility that the outbreak drags on regardless of the weather. Practice good hygiene! Check out this @EsquirePH article by @EdselSalvana on what to expect IF we do go to a #pandemic situation #PandemicPreparedness esquiremag.ph/life/health-an…
