Jihad is an Arabic word meaning "struggle" or "thrive" often used to describe personal, spiritual efforts to follow God
The majority of Muslims agree that the concept details activities describing inner spiritual struggle to be better for the sake of God
Examples of these types of spiritual struggles are committing to daily prayers, abstaining from gossip, and eating more veggies
However, anti-Muslim groups and militants have co-opted the word and equate it to violence, “holy war,” and “terrorism”
Mainstream media has also popularized the use of Jihad as way of talking abt "holy war" often used 2 describe violence committed by #Muslims
Anti-Muslim groups have co-opted "jihad" to promote a conspiracy theory about a Muslim "civilization jihad" plan to "take over America"

Current/former Trump admin officials--Bannon, Miller, Gorka--have used 'jihad' or 'jihadist' when referencing violence committed by Muslims
Such uses of #jihad are dangerous because they play into a narrative that all #Muslims are a #threat, which feeds into #Islamophobia & hate
