Most of changes already communicated by ECT press release of June 2022 (see energychartertreaty.org/modernisation-…) but some points worth noting:

I) flexibility mechanism for the fossil fuel carve out included in Annex NI, thus doesn't require follow path amendment procedure. Annex can be changed by ECT Conference decision, but for certain parts of annex NI a separate procedure for entry into force apparently foreseen 2/8

Advice I wish I knew as a first year ECT, after my first year teaching:
A thread…
#ect #edutwitter #mfltwitterati #ect22 #nqt
Disclaimer: I am definitely not a pro but I have been through quite a journey during my first year teaching and these are the things that turned it around for me and allowed me to end the year with a better work life balance and strong love for the profession
1. OBSERVE -as many different teachers as you can, as often as you can. Just because you aren’t a trainee anymore doesn’t mean you can’t set observations up yourself - this was hands down what had the most positive impact on my teaching this year and helped with specific problems

Going into my 20th year of teaching next week! Here are my top #ECT tips for meeting the needs of #SEND students.

Starting with the obvious, find out everything you can about them. Read their pupil profiles and/or EHCPs, highlighting the key info./1
If you are a primary teacher of a student with an EHCP, find time to phone parents/carers at the start of term. This could be the day before school starts to introduce yourself, or a couple of days in to ask how they’re settling in. /2
Talk to the teacher(s) they had last year. Find out what worked and what didn’t in terms of supporting them. Ask the SENCO for a 10-minute chat: what can you tell me about ______? Look at their work if possible, to get a sense of strengths and challenges. /3

BREAKING: London-based fossil fuel company Ascent Resources — who are suing the Slovenian govt over its decision to ban fracking — has upped its demands from €120 million to over HALF A BILLION EUROS.

🧵What does €500 million mean to people in Slovenia?
According to our allies @Umanotera, €500 million could pay for:

🍎 Free school meals for Slovenian primary school children for 6 years!
OR
🔥Slovenia's programme to support vulnerable people with their energy bills — 23 times over.
2/4
Instead, thanks to the Energy Charter Treaty (#ECT), if Ascent win that money will go to its shareholders.

Corporate Courts (ISDS), embedded in the ECT, enable corporations to sue governments over climate action — draining public finances and undermining public services. 3/4

The fossil fuel industry has infiltrated all steps of democratic will formation & decision making in order to protect business as usual, locking us in on the worst case climate scenario.

Yet, @Shell's CEO believes that "the public" will magically prevent a 3°C world.
I've heard this illusion many times that the public as an entity is somewhat isolated from interventions to protect fossil interests. And that it therefore will come around the corner at some point. This is often coupled with misanthropic cliches about humans being essentially
dumb, greedy and ultimately deserving catastrophe as we haven't stopped it up until this point. So it might be helpful to be very clear about all the ways the fossil fuel industry has tried to control "the public" via the political discourse, lawmaking procedures and courts.

“Either we kill this treaty, or the treaty will kill us!”

"Put it simple, this treaty is a major threat to the EU energy sovereignty, #GreenDeal, and #ClimateJustice goals. This timely comic is of high importance to ensure the French Presidency will end the participation of EU countries to this ecocide treaty.” @ysaheb #ExitECT #NoECT Image
"The Energy Charter Treaty is the arguably the largest and most arcane obstacle to climate action. This comic will help you figure out what is going on through thoroughly researched cases. Read, share and convince your politicians to stop the ECT!" @JKSteinberger #ExitECT Image

@_pem_pem Why this is nonsensical: "Jeffrey Lieberman, a professor of #psychiatry at Columbia University...“The problems that they’ve been criticized for have more to do [with] the way they’re used by doctors & the heterogeneity of the condition that they’re indicated for.” /1
@_pem_pem What Lieberman is saying is that if #antidepressants were prescribed to a population for which they are known to work well, they would have a much better track record. This is true, because it is a tautology. /2
@_pem_pem The reasoning is circular, if #antidepressants were prescribed for those people for whom the drugs worked, they would work. /3

THREAD on DUTIES: I do approx. 13 duties per week. Mostly in the canteen. With a reasonable AHT teaching timetable on top, I have a vested interest in not using my voice too much and certainly not shouting. So here’s a thread with some tips for any less seasoned duty staff /#ECT
A lot of these are mentioned as good in-classroom techniques by @DougLemov , e.g. ‘radar’ ‘be seen looking’ ‘least invasive intervention’ but I shall summarise them here in my own words as pertains to my (secondary) school canteen…
1. POSITION - have a couple of default high-visibility positions, where you can see as much of the space as possible. For me this is often near the door so I can see in + out of the canteen, or further into the room with max visibility.

Why does the state never win in claims under the #EnergyCharterTreaty and how is #Luxembourg 🇱🇺connected to some of these claims?
The example of Abengoa Spain can give an insight in these questions:
Spain is the most sued country under the Energy Charter Treaty: it accumulates 50 lawsuits and a claimed amount of more than 10 billion euros. The solution is very simple: to avoid this waste of public money, the exit from the Treaty must be initiated.
In a claim under the #EnergyCharterTreaty it can never be said that "the State has won": the defence costs alone amount to millions of euros. As in the case of Abengoa Spain, Spain will have to pay 6.7 million taxpayers money only in process costs.

#ect @MrTs_NQTs @TeamRE_UK a couple of years ago I shifted how I mark and it changed my life. A thread. #edutwitter
1 I only mark work on lined paper so I can fit it all into one ziplock bag to carry round/ bring home. You never know when you might find a few moments to mark- I’ve marked waiting for my interviews to start!
2. All work is then tagged together. With a class list on thé front.

Great piece by @tomperrett97 showing how the corporate court system doesn't only mean governments get sued for enacting #ClimateAction - they may be forced to reverse these vital policies 1/6 #NoISDS bylinetimes.com/2021/09/13/the…
A reminder, this system was developed as a 'magna carta for capitalism' to help undermine the decolonial movements of the 50s-70s, as explained here by @_BvdM 2/6 newstatesman.com/business/2021/…
More recently, they've become a multimillion dollar industry which is helping fossil fuel corporations challenge climate action and maintain their profits, often raising funds to engage in new oil/ coal/ gas exploration. #ClimateEmergency 3/6 aljazeera.com/opinions/2021/…

A summary of my talk at #rED21 for those who couldn't make it 👀 👇

➡️ My experience of creating a coherent, evidence-informed curriculum for training novice (new and early career) teachers #ITT #ECT
Supporting novice teachers to build a mental model of teaching is important but hard to do. Having a visual model to provide coherence across their training helps them make connections.
I developed this model which blends the 5 core areas of the CCF/ECF with the 'Making Every Lesson Count' framework.

1) I just watched the documentary @cureddoc, about the past pathologization of #homosexuality by @APApsychiatric, its harmful stigmatization and treatments such as #ECT and #lobotomy, and the efforts that led to overturning the classification of being #gay as a #mentaldisorder.
2) @cureddoc is very good, but there is at least one false and misleading statement. At 1:12:11, near the end, text states, “#ECT continues as a treatment for severe forms of depression – with the consent of patients and effective results for many people.” Forced ECT still real.
3) @cureddoc #ECT is still often done without consent of the patient, many patients who did sign for it have later said they did not feel they were given proper informed consent, and many patients report long-term cognitive impairment, as well psychological trauma. #psychiatry

@jill_d35 @NoMoreStigmaMH (2) We've only been together a few months, so this intense period of living together has taught me a great deal about the brain injury he sustained from #ECT in 2015, and the impact this has had on his life. It is still has a huge impact now, in both of our lives.
@jill_d35 @NoMoreStigmaMH (3) Andy was 45 when he had #ECT and he has lost more as a result of it than he could ever have dreamed. He had a good career, two degrees, was fit, climbed mountains, spoke 7 languages. Now he is unable to work due to cognitive impairment and has days when walking is difficult.
@jill_d35 @NoMoreStigmaMH 4) His speech is often affected, and he has to rest every afternoon to get through the day to it's end.
Can you imagine Jem, how I feel when psychiatrists like Robert Howard & Tim Stevens deny evidence of brain damage exists from #ECT? We live with the evidence every damn day.

This thread is about depression - but it isn’t ‘sad’. I've accepted that my mental illness was ongoing and cyclical. Caused by a faulty part in my brain. That’s ok! I could have had a pancreas that didn’t work or a heart that malfunctioned, too. But I got a broken brain...
Fine! Let’s deal with it. What does treatment look like for a broken brain? Last week, my brain received 72,000 ‘zaps’ through a magnetic coil to the part of my brain that’s ‘broken’. I’m weepy because I already feel a difference...
I’m weepy because I keep forgetting what it feels like to not be ‘sad’ all the time (it’s deeper than this). If we think of emotions as chemicals and electrical impulses, those zaps have encouraged the part of my brain that makes emotions happen to work again...

Dr. Daskalakis discussed some staggering statistics about #mentalhealth. He said that if 350,000 people were waiting - and not receiving - cancer treatment, there would be an uproar. There are 350,000 people waiting for mental health treatment...
