#Ambulance staff & #Paramedics are you feeling anxious about impending events? Here are some top tips to get you through.

A short thread.... 🧵

1. Know that you ARE doing the best you can - be compassionate towards yourself.

2. Understand what is and isn’t in your gift to control - whilst things are horrendously challenging, many events you are facing at present are beyond your control.

3. Focus on the things within your control - that patient in front of you right now, things that you can do to give yourself a bit of respite - even if it’s one small thing.

4. Limit caffeine and sugar intake, which can make anxiety worse and make it harder to get to sleep. 3/5

If you've never zipped up body bags on a shift, you shouldn’t be deciding how much Ambulance crews earn.

If you've never watched a person suffocate to death from their own blood, you shouldn’t be deciding how much Ambulance crews earn

If you've never had someone attempt to punch you in the face for trying to assess your patient, you shouldn’t be deciding how much Ambulance crews earn.

If you've never had someone beg you to not let them die, you shouldn’t be deciding how much Ambulance crews earn.

If you've never had to look into parents eyes or hold them while they crumble as you call the time of death of their child, you shouldn't be deciding how much Ambulance crews earn.

Ambulance strikes, and the state of play in the ambulance world. A long thread. 🧵
It was a saturday night.
I turned in for my rostered shift - something like the 4th or 5th 12hr shift of that week - and as I normally do, I cast my eyes down what we call "the runners" - the list of staff working operationally that night.
There were three ambulances.
One led by a fantastic and experienced Advanced Emergency Medical Technician. Although more experienced than many paramedics - including myself - this person has a scope of practice without intravenous medications, or advanced life support.

How much money have you made today?

A thread

#Ambulance for those whose heart will be broken by the thread
Healthcare workers are often seen as rich.

People hail you and bill you... Why not? They pay a lot in hospitals, but how much of the money gets to you?
A nurse in my facility got sick, she couldn't afford to be admitted in our facility without going broke.

AMBO CRISIS UPDATE - Last night my father needed an ambulance (non COVID related issue). He is 79, was fainting non stop, vomiting when conscious and had a blood nose. I’d consider that an emergency. My sister (who he lives with) called 000 at 9pm.The operator asked a series of..
questions before telling my sister Dad doesn’t fit the criteria as ‘urgent’. She told my sister someone would call her back straight away to Triage him further. 35 minutes later, someone else called back and asked the same questions and again, said someone would call back …….
straight away. Another 30 minutes passes. A doctor from a hospital in Sydney (my Dad lives in Melbourne) rang my sister and spoke to her for 20 minutes, provided some advice and recommended he see a doctor (no shit !). My sister and I are furious and this is….

Really scary sounding story about #ambulance provision in England today.

Closing 57 of ambulance stations?! :O

Why it's not actually as bad as you first think - a thread by a #paramedic. (1/15)
In the 1970s/1980s, ambulance services were simple; every town had a station, with more ambulances than the town needs.

If you called 999, one of the crews would come, take you to hospital, and then go back to their station to clean, restock, and play pool til next call. (2/15)
Whilst really easy to understand - it only works when you have more ambs than you need, and when it's busy, your two ambulances might both be 'on a job ' and if you call 999, one of the two crews in the next town will have to come - which might be 20 miles away! (3/15)

Okay kiddies, get your jammies on! I'm going to tell you why the FAA wouldn't let you play a Sony Walkman on an aircraft for so many years ... then suddenly they were okay with it from soon after takeoff until just before landing. First, though: *I* need an introduction
I'm a retired 3H0x1 who documented classified air operations in Iraq in 2003 for Operation IRAQI FREEDOM. A "Deployable Enlisted Historian" is a freaky USAF job because I can stop a general in his tracks during a deadly crisis to demand a briefing, e.g.:
But what's important to our little bedtime story is that I started as a 3H0x1 for the 932d Airlift Wing, a special USAF unit that flew aeromedical missions. The C-9 "Nightingale" aircraft was a 500 MPH #ambulance and we had a fleet of them!

Why is there so much talk about ambulance offload delays? A look into the process, challenges, and solutions (a 🧵).
While not a new problem, there has been increased conversation on ambulance offload delays as we weather this latest COVID surge. Systems all over the world are struggling to get ambulances back in service in a timely manner after transporting pts to the hospital.
@NEMSISTAC nationwide data shows offload times (elapsed time from the arrival of an ambulance with a pt to the ED until the ambulance is back in service) have increased and spiked at various times in 2020 & 2021 (red + purple lines) compared to 2018 & 2019 (blue + green lines).

Its #BlackHistoryMonth #BHM

In the 1970s in Pittsburgh,
there was an important development relevant to both Black History & Paramedic History,
back then it was unusual for any care to be given en route to hospital, with most ambulances simply acting to transport patients,
But the Freedom House Ambulance was bucking this trend,
They were crewing their ambulances with Emergency Medical Technicians,
Trained in life saving interventions and techniques...
Not only that,
Freedom House was recruiting from Pittsburgh's inner-city neighbourhoods,
staffing all their vehicles with African-American EMTs, many from disadvantaged background, many lacking a High School Diploma...
