New @polybioRF podcast: I interviewed Dr. Alessio Fasano: Chief of the Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology & Nutrition at MassGeneral Hospital for Children. Watch on Youtube () or listen on an App like Spotify (…)
2/ Alessio discusses this study: His team showed that in children with MIS-C, #SARS-CoV-2 gut reservoir led to release of zonulin (a biomaker of intestinal permeability) + subsequent trafficking of spike protein to into blood, leading to hyperinflammation: Image
3/ Alessio and team are using a zonulin inhibitor called Larazotide to improve gut permeability/SARS-CoV-2 spike leakage in #MIS-C (the drug may also have antviral properties). They are ready to start a Larazotide trial in #LongCovid too if funded

1/ With #Vaccines approved for 👧🏽👦🏾 5-11 yo parents have a decision to make. #Omicron reminds us we aren’t through this yet.

As a #Pediatrician I have spent my career helping parents make health care decisions about their kids. This🧵is about #risk and the decision to #Vaccinate
2/ The decision to #Vaccinate means you believe the benefit outweighs the risk - so let’s break it down starting with- what #risk does #Covid19 pose to our #kids?
3/ Acute risk in 5-11 yo from 🇨🇦 data:

Hospitalizations 🏥 in 0.2%
Death in 0.002%
#LongCovid in 2-5% (still learning)
#MIS-C 1/3500 cases (most common in 5-11 age group)

Let’s remember kids rarely die so this is on par with other diseases we prevent with #vaccination

Should #children be vaccinated against #COVID19?

Our review outlines the points to consider in weighing up whether all healthy children under 12y should be vaccinated against COVID-19.

As specialists in paediatric #InfectiousDiseases and #Vaccinology, we recognise enormous benefits of and strongly support child vaccination programmes

Our review highlights that the balance of risks and benefits of COVID-19 vaccination in children is more complex than in adults as the relative harms from vaccination and disease are less well established in this age group.

The Psychology of Human Misjudgement - Charlie Munger Full Speech via @YouTube
well, if one can get around the accounting and auditing systems, you can commit fraud on a massive scale.
That is what rogue traders do!
But, financial institutions have invested big time in hiring quants who can write codes and Greek symbols which board members don't comprehend
It's brilliant if your standard fraud risk assessor aka auditor and the quantitative risk manager can use the #Benford #Law to identify, proactively measure and control fraud risk-related predicate financial crimes.
But, first, do the basic work, before leapfrogging.

It’s important to acknowledge that vaccinated people can acquire/transmit the Delta variant. While vaccinated individuals should experience less severe acute #COVID-19, they may still be at risk for LongCovid/PASC (which has been shown to develop after asymptomatic/mild COVID-19)
2/ For example, this team reported a range of long-term symptoms in a cohort of previously confirmed or presumed COVID-19 patients whose acute symptoms were largely managed without the need for hospitalization:…
3/ This preprint documented persistent COVID-19 symptoms in 1,407 subjects with confirmed #SARS-CoV-2 infection. ∼32% of subjects reporting symptoms at 61+ days after infection were asymptomatic at the time of initial SARS-CoV-2 testing:

Weeks after #SARS-CoV-2 inf or exposure, some children develop a severe, life-threatening illness called Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (#MIS-C). GI symptoms are common in MIS-C pts & severe hyperinflammatory response ensues with potential for ❤️ complications.
👉🏽As proof of concept, they treated a #MIS-C patient with #larazotide, a #zonulin antagonist, & monitored impact on antigenemia and clinical response.
👉🏽in MIS-C, prolonged + of SARS-CoV-2 in t GI tract ➡️ to release of zonulin, a biomarker of intestinal permeability,

#Covid19 is probably the greatest debunker in #medicine we have seen...

Read this ... 👇🏾
🧵 *** The researchers found no evidence of a difference in response in biochemical markers of #inflammation between patients with #MIS-C/PIMS-TS who were treated with #IVIG, #steroids, or #biologics, compared with those who were not.
*** Despite a lack of evidence, 🇬🇧 and 🇺🇸 treatment guidelines for MIS-C/PIMS-TS have become very similar.

*** By the end of the study period, most patients had received immunomodulation.

#Thread #COVIDSecondWave
Dire warning from Dr Darayus Gazder, a young doctor in #Karachi: Second wave is very strong, patients are highly critical and sick. We have a waiting list of over 10 per bed. People are dying/suffering alone w no one to say goodbye!
It's painful
Some deteriorate within minutes. Others who survive COVID have permanent severe #lung damage, can't eat a single meal w/o high flow oxygen, later die painfully as if #drowning once respiratory/cardiac muscles can't compensate as oxygen is depleted.
- Dr Darayus Gazher 2/n
Educated people should take this seriously. But they are Instead throwing parties, weddings, going to sports events, malls, shopping, eating out with no precautions, even mocking the disease. This selfish behaviour must end as it endangers ALL age groups

People think Mark Twain said, “A lie can travel half way around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes.” #WednesdayWisdom Image
An actual, verifiable quote, from Jonathan Swift, 1710: “Falsehood flies, and the Truth comes limping after it.” #WednesdayWisdom , thanks to @QuoteResearch.… Image
