“There is a lot of interest in fleeing #Saudi women at the moment but the situation for #Emirati and other women in the #Gulf is often just as bad.” As I often asked about Rahaf’s story: what are these countries doing to women that makes them seek asylum? theguardian.com/world/2019/feb…
“women remain second class citizens in the #UAE, where the concept of “male guardianship,” incorporated in UAE law,” @hrw hrw.org/news/2015/03/0…
#UAE abuses are too often overlooked because of the flashy facade and glitz of #Dubai and because it is not as big as or as influential as regional behemoth #Saudi Arabia. Look closer and pay attention.
Remember this? #UAE patriarchy in a photograph: The father of an Emirati princess (Latifa) held captive (her sister too has been forced back home after escaping) gives out awards to all men for initiative designed to foster gender equality in the workplace theguardian.com/sport/2019/jan…
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum is #Dubai’s ruler and the prime minister of the #UAE. One of his daughters Sheikha Latifa spent 7yrs planning her failed escape bid from the Gulf state she considered a gilded prison, according to her friends. amp.theguardian.com/world/2018/dec…
Latifa is 2nd of the Sheikh’s daughters to try to flee and then vanish after reports of recapture. Her older sister, Shamsa, was seized on the streets of Cambridge after fleeing the family’s Surrey estate in 2000,in an apparent abduction never fully investigated by British police
In my first book, Headscarves and Hymens: Why the Middle East Needs a Sexual Revolution (which is banned in #UAE, #Saudi Arabia, #Kuwait, and most likely #Qatar too) I look at misogynistic laws in the region. Its available in 11 languages & I’m working on getting it in Arabic too
