1. Toxic masculinity killed 25 people
2. State negligence and refusal to invest in the train system continues to kill #Egyptians
Clearly, the long-running neglect by successive #Egyptian regimes of the rail network has claimed too many lives. And re yesterday’s tragedy, the long-running refusal to confront patriarchy & toxic masculinity - on state and street level - will also continue to claim lives.
A fight between 2 men killed 25 people. When I write or talk about feminism and the need to dismantle patriarchy, I hear “This isn’t the time!” When is the time? Men who benefit from patriarchy don’t care about its toll on others. It took a toll on 25 people yesterday. #Egypt
So, yes: rightfully condemn the regime for neglecting trains.
AND: insist on condemning patriarchy and the toxic masculinity that it enables and which we are told resulted in the death of 25 people at #Egypt’s main and busiest train station.
Toxic masculinity is deadly.
#ToxicMasculinity killed 25 people in #Egypt yesterday. Men and women. Everyday, toxic masculinity makes public space hell for women and girls in #Egypt where street sexual harassment is at epidemic levels.
In #Egypt now, an activist is in jail for 2yrs for exposing street sexual harassment. We had a revolution in which women & men demanded the fall of the regime. The regime-military rule-remains & revolution has devolved into toxic masculinity writ large: men fighting men for power.
I make the same arguments when #toxicmasculinity in the form of mass shootings kills people in the US. Patriarchy is universal and quotidian. We must fight it everywhere. We must expose toxic masculinity globally. #FuckThePatriarchy
And for a reminder of patriarchy and the #toxicmasculinity it enables writ large.

Rise of the 'strongman': Dozens of female world leaders warn women's rights being eroded. Authoritarians and “macho-type strongmen” hate feminism and women’s rights theguardian.com/politics/2019/…
