I'm looking for a volunteer with writing skills, ideally in the Brighton/Sussex area, to work on a very interesting project concerning human rights, refugees and environmental destruction. Thanks.
I should point out that this is not my project, and I'm not involved in it. But it is something very interesting and worthwhile. Several people have come forward already - thank you! And we perhaps have the makings of a small team.

We keep being told, by grouse moor owners and even conservation bodies, that burning the land is good for wildlife. They *could not be more wrong*.

What makes this even more groteque is that it's happening inside a national park: @northyorkmoors. I was there recently, and it's one big killing field. The lowlands are crammed with pheasants, the uplands crammed with grouse. And I found these moles hanging from a fence
Our national parks are a national disgrace.
They are run not for the nation, but for a small minority, especially those obsessed by killing.

We have a massive enthusiasm for wildlife in this country.
Hugh audiences for wildlife programmes.
Vast membership of conservation groups.
But our wildlife is disappearing at astonishing speed.
So what is going on?

There’s a complete disconnect between our love of wildlife and action to protect it.
There are several reasons for this.
1. An astonishing failure by the conservation groups to demand much better and
to mobilise their members.

We practice what I call “back to front conservation” in this country. We latch onto a particular species, that might be of no global conservation concern, and pour vast resources into protecting it, often at the expense of far rarer species and richer ecosystems.

This letter epitomises everything that has gone wrong with Britain's relationship with nature. When an organisation is attacked by *the head of a national park* for trying to bring some wildlife back to a sheepwrecked desert, you know we're in trouble.

This is the habitat that would cover much of the Lake District if it weren't for sheep grazing out tree seedlings: temperate rainforest. But when the @lakedistrictnpa's chair fiercely attacks anyone who suggests even a slight lessening of these impacts, it doesn't stand a chance.

Almost 20 years ago, the Irish government decided to create the system of Direct Provision. A system that would strip asylum seekers of their fundamental human rights to privacy (+family life), dignity, work, and enrich private companies who run the system
There are people who have spent as long as 10 years in limbo. Waiting for a decision. When the first decision comes, it's usually a negative one so people have to appeal to get protection. And may lose an appeal and go to court.
During the appeal, many aren't allowed to work. For parents, this effective condemns their children to a childhood of State-sponsored poverty as they are deprived of material supports. Simple things like going to the movies become difficult for children in Direct Provision

We've just released the final report by @Alston_UNSR, the UN Special Rapporteur on extreme #poverty, on his visit to the #UK. The report is available here: undocs.org/A/HRC/41/39/Ad…. A few key takeaways:
Some have asked me why a UN expert on #poverty would visit the #UK. Unfortunately, although the UK is the world’s 5th largest economy, 14 million are in poverty, child poverty is rising & predicted to reach 40% by 2021, homelessness is up 60%, and food bank use has skyrocketed.
To understand #poverty in the #UK, you have to look at the massive disinvestment in social support since 2010: the end of a centralized social fund, changes to the ways benefits are capped & calculated that substantially reduce their value, the decimation of civil legal aid, etc.

Here’s a very interesting situation.

Will human rights and the interests of the general public in clean water; or corporate demands win out here?

In the Corporate States of America its usually the big money corporations that get favoured.
Lets hope that won’t be the case here.
If Dakota Access Pipe Line did not legally own the land, then Clean Water protestors were not trespassing on DAPL land.

Protestors were injured in the very aggressive assault on the protestors. Was this on instruction of local or federal police or done by police privately hired
Police used water cannons in below freezing weather on the Clean Water #DAPL protestors; as well as tear gas and rubber bullets that caused serious injury.
Over 300 people were injured.

It was like something you’d expect in a vicious totalitarian police state.

Get a portfolio said the writing panel/advice/speaker in what is the latest throwaway simple advice that instantly builds a career…. So, let’s talk about them.

1)Portfolios are NOT magic. Simply having one doesn't get you a job. Tey are a tool to be used in chasing work and an increasing number of employers ask for them. Having one can be very useful, but just putting some bits of writing in the same place does not = instant career.
2) People tend to read your email first, then your c.v. and then portfolio. Mess up stages 1, or 2 and 3 may well not matter. Always rework your email, c.v. and portfolio for EVERY application. Focus on what matches that job/company.
