Today, @AsthmaIreland made a public statement in support of Minister @EamonRyan's proposed Solid Fuel Regulations. We called on all parties to support the regulations in a bid to end the 1,300 premature deaths caused annually by fine particle emissions from burning solid fuels.
The new regulations would ban smoky coal and wet wood, and prohibiting the commercial sale of sod turf, will save lives, but provide for continued turf extraction by those with turbary rights and distribution within small communities. @Dept_ECC

I am a dr who has dedicated her career to people w/ #cancer.
I am the grateful daughter of a #lymphoma survivor.
I have #asthma.
Why wouldn't I #wearamask if it might prevent an illness, death, or #longcovid disability?
If you find masks uncomfortable, I can suggest some to try.
(And then I'm going to talk to you for the ENTIRE flight & all the way down the terminal to baggage claim & ground transportation about masks, so be ready if you're in the seat next to me & do this. Might be better just to #WearAMask.😂)

And then when I change your mind, you'll be in an airplane thumbs-up selfie with me wearing your favorite of the several brands of spare N95 masks I have in my backpack.

Hallo Frau Meier, liebes @faznet Team.

I'll be adding short important points which would hopefully help in remembering certain concepts during #PLAB preparation, to this thread🧵every now and then as I take them out from my scattered notes. Feel free to comment your tips and tricks which would help others, as well 👇
Please don't take any of these as medical advice 😂🙏. Real life stuff is much more nuanced. These are just clinchers for the sake of the exam.
#PLAB
1. Drug contraindications...
-Avoid BAN drugs in Asthma (Beta blockers, aspirin, NSAIDS) &
-DAMN drugs in diarrhoea (Diuretics, ACEIs, Metformin, NSAIDs)

🧵on basic #inhaler technique b/c we can all do better educating our #copd #asthma patients 🫁

Studies show inhaler error is common & many pts aren’t taught how to use their inhalers properly

↑💊 ≠ always the answer

#MedTwitter #MedStudentTwitter #Tweetorial
1/
Step 1: Actually ask how they use their inhaler😅

With so many types, it’s not surprising pts & providers get confused 😵‍💫

Esp in clinic, ⏰ is tight. But only takes a min to explain

Also pharmacists/RTs are amazing! I <3 using them when able

2/
Let’s first discuss the common inhaler devices. Which one was used in the clip above?

Day 3 of #Omicron symptoms was my worst so far, with fatigue & a very heavy head, alongside sneezing. My tight chest, feeling of reduced lung capacity and tickly lung sensation had subsided slightly, as did the coughing, that had become painful on Day 2 #Oximeter down to 96%...
...so I slept a lot on Day 3.

But now it's 1am on Day 4 and I feel full of life. Fatigue gone. No more headache. Slight wheeze still, Oximeter 96%; no appetite, but sense of smell and taste are fine.

Wonder whether the worst is over, as I'm double AZ-jabbed plus Pfizer-boosted?
I can't find evidence of people relapsing into worsening symptoms post-Day 3, but my lungs are my weakness... Am I good right now because I slept so much over the last 3 days?

Tomorrow I begin my participation in the @UniofOxford #Molnupiravir (antiviral) trial.

This 🧵 resonated. Trained in Houston, #asthma central, I was in this scenario SO many times.

I had the best #pediatric training at @TexasChildrens & @bcmhouston - you see it all.

Amazing that mere tweets can transmit humane, quality #MedEd teaching across the globe.
After moving to Boston I found myself surrounded by highly anxious doctors. We have an over abundance of resources and a healthier population. I saw people quick to overreact and manage (poorly) their own anxiety & need for control, with harmful aggressive overintervention.
I also do get being “Harvard” makes one a target. Juries are not going to understand “at the brink of death” and not intubating or the equivalent action in another scenario. “Jury of peers” is not present in a malpractice case. Good care can seem negligent, paradoxically.

🧵1/5 #UKchildren 💔I’ve lost track the number of times this kind of “but…”argument is used where (all ages) covid death figures are concerned- but they were old, but they had serious health problems, but they were obese… it feeds down the flow chart of u can ignore covid b’cos
..2/ at the results end of the flow chart we have personal choice trumps severe health risks, eugenics, getting told to f-off on SM when raising issues for CEV community, valid concerns dismissed as hysteria or anxiety, stay indoors & keep the hazmat suit on etc etc….
3/ the longer covid drags on thanks to these ignorant, hurtful, discriminatory takes, the gloomier the outlook gets, yet doom & gloom is what those wanting to suppress covid were accused of. Having #asthma, #chemotherapy #transplant pt, etc your risks are waaayyy higher

The built environment is the human-made physical space where we live, work, and socialize. These spaces have tremendous impacts on our health in the pollutants they produce and the activities they facilitate.

The built environment can facilitate or hinder physical activity depending on the availability and safety of sidewalks, bike paths, and trails. Lower physical activity in absence of these features can lead to obesity #ph260720

Vaping and #asthma

Justine from Kangaroo Pt, Brisbane smoked 30 #cigs a day for 35y

✅“within 2 weeks of #vaping I could breathe and sing again”
✅“instead of Ventolin every 2 hours I take it maybe once weekly”
✅“I have stopped my preventer”
✅“my cough has gone”

Justine is no exception.

Other recent #asthma patients have told me:

✅“no more chest infections”
✅“my asthma has completely gone since I started vaping”
✅“my asthma is much better”
✅“my asthma has substantially improved”

But Lung Foundation Australia (who have blocked me) + @AsthmaAustralia want them to keep smoking! Why?

The @TheBHF is a strong supporter of #vaping

Bacteria in the #gut outnumber fungi as a class, but at the individual species level can occur in the same numbers.
Most #gut fungi belong to Ascomycota or Basidiomycota

It's #WorldAsthmaDay.

#Asthma is a common lung 🫁 condition that causes intermittent breathing difficulties. It often starts in childhood, although it can also develop in adults, and affects people of all ages.
Common symptoms of #asthma include

✅Breathlessness
✅ Coughing
✅ Wheezing
✅ Chest tightness

During an asthma attack, these symptoms become much worse. Asthma attacks can be fatal but are largely preventable and manageable.
#Asthma cannot be cured, but good management with inhaled medications can control the disease and enable people with asthma to enjoy a normal, active life.

I am an Asthmatic, i use inhalers, inhalers are not addictive. They cause your airways to open up. Duration of its action differs, inhalers with salmeterol or formoterol works for 12 hours. The steroid in the inhalers act to reduce inflammation inside airways and 1/
