“Low-background metals are valuable because they carry particularly low levels of radiation. Used as shielding in advanced particle physics projects and medical science devices like X-ray chambers, these metals won’t interfere with specialized, highly radiation-sensitive tools.”
2/“Most steel is made by blowing air or pure O2 into molten pig iron to remove impurities & make it stronger. Since start of atmospheric nuclear tests, all air-even purified O2, contains elevated levels of isotopes like cobalt-60,most new steel is infused w/radioactive particles.

#radioactive commentary, w/ apologies to all admirable people of #BrainSTOA working hard on #DataSharing. This highlights a need to broaden #sharing to #computations & #insights. Premises were clear in Ngai’s “data resource development”, Bjaalie’s “modeling workflow” #Teamscience
Data sharing is good. Too much data creation, objectionable. Overreliance of data might be used to obfuscate gaps in theory, analysis and interpretation. Data is also a currency for misused scientific power. #InclusiveScience
At this point, we should also focus on sharing #ComputationalTools (and explaining them, and building expertise in using them). #ComputationalNeuroscience.

We should enhance collective vetting of our interpretations of their meaning.

Today the World Nuclear Industry Status Report will be published! We European Greens have supported this report financially, so that the public is sufficiently informed about the global machinations of the #nuclear industry! Checkout the statistics and go through the #threat:
Let's start with the most worrying figure: The average age of the global #reactor fleet has now risen to 31 years. Many of the currently active reactors were built to run for 30 years but were extended. The older the nuclear fleet, the greater the risk of disaster
The report, which will appear on today, lists 416 active reactors, 8 more than in 2020. As for the share of nuclear power in the global electricity market, the report sees no change, as in previous years: The share is stagnant at about 10%.

Thread 1/ #Typhoon Hagibis made landfall in #Japan and has caused widespread flooding with human lives lost. Spare a thought for those in Japan who need help at present. #Fukushima Daiichi. But some are using this storm to promote scientific misinformation
2/ I am seeing posts that link the #radioactive contamination/decay heat from #Fukushima Daiichi & the development of tropical cyclones like #Hagibis and going so far as to say the human caused global warming is not like to #CO2 but nuclear fallout/contamination
3/ The argument goes something like this and is summarized in a blog I posted some time ago @dailykos…:
1. Fukushima released radionuclides to the environment with much of the contamination ending up in the Pacific Ocean
2. Isotopes generate heat on decay
