Heya! This thread is going to be a mini-review of the @Surface Go for development purposes. #nodejs #javascript
The Surface Go is a 400 gram Surface device with a 64 bit Intel CPU, and Windows 10.
TLDR: I'm VERY happy. 😊
I use: node, yarn, vscode, git, a bunch of terminal windows, ssh, etc.
Why a Surface Go: I run a small startup (@certsimple) and might be called upon to work anytime. I wanted something I could throw in my bag, and not feel like I'm lugging a laptop everywhere.
I love being responsive to customers: if something happens, I don't want to just respond via email, I want to be able to find bugs, fix them, and deploy from wherever I am.
Things I was worried about:
- The keyboard. It's a type cover. Most of my job is typing.
- Performance. WTF is a 'Pentium Gold'?
Keyboard: it's fine. It's a working keyboard, 90% as good as my regular metal keyboard - which is fine, I don't think about it when typing at all. It's way better travel than current gen Mac keyboards.
Performance: there's no lag in anything.
For terminal stuff I use my Powershell config, designed for *nix users github.com/mikemaccana/po…
Transferring my stuff: I used OneDrive. Big gripe here is node_modules which OneDrive simply CANNOT handle syncing. I had to remove these for OneDrive to finish syncing then reinstall via yarn.
Cool extras: I can plug the Go into a dock (a single magnetic connector) and drive a giant display, big mouse and keyboard from it. Performance is fine there too.
That's all for now. Any questions let me know. 👍✨
