I mean, how isn't the nation coming to a standstill as #Barr goes after Russia investigators, the GOP brazenly defies our rules and norms, and women's rights are under frontal assault?

If anything, it feels like the outrage is diminishing.

When I wrote DigitalCivilWar.info, I did so knowing the brutal truth that we've entered a new phase in American politics, one where the far right has taken control of the GOP and is seizing more power by the day. The book explains the lay of the battlefield and what we can do.
As blue Americans, we are in a struggle for political survival. The usual Beltway strategies don't work. Within lawful and non-violent means, we need to join forces, be leaders, and defend our rights and our democracy.

The #abortion battle is a central part of that fight.

MASSIVE SCREW-UP

Continued dithering by Dem leaders on impeaching Trump has had an extremely damaging effect on the power of #impeachment to protect the rule of law.

They thought it would strengthen their hand to appear reluctant, but waffling has had the opposite effect.
I hate to say this, but I increasingly believe that #impeachment will be far less effective now than it would have been out of the gate in January.

Mealy-mouthed Dem excuses for inaction have telegraphed to the public that impeachment is entirely a partisan political calculus.
Just to be clear: I believe more strongly than ever that Dems should #impeach NOW. And it isn't about Mueller. Incitement of violence against the press is enough. What this thread is saying is that #impeachment will have less teeth than it would have a few months ago.

1. Any Dem who says we need MORE evidence for #impeachment or that they're worried about the optics, shouldn't be in a leadership position.

2. Instead of MORE candidates joining the 2020 race, we need some to start withdrawing.

WOMEN ARE UNDER ATTACK

I've been in politics for two decades and I've seen my party steadily lose ground to the rightwing onslaught. Women are now facing #Gilead in states like #Alabama, #Georgia, #Ohio, and more. The Republican Party is an extremist threat.
ACCEPT OUR FAILURES. AND FIGHT SMARTER.

I look at my own efforts working within the Democratic establishment to bring about change. And I see failure. I want to do better. I ask Dem leaders to look in their hearts and ask what they've done wrong. How did we let things get here?

Some abortions are already illegal in a majority of states and you may not even know yours is one of them.

Prior to #Roe in 1973, only three states, NY, WA and HI had legal abortion.
In 12 other states abortion was legal to save the life of the mother. In every other state abortion was illegal under all circumstances including rape, incest, fetal abnormality and life of the mother.

Currently, all but six states--44 plus DC-- require parental notification for a minor to obtain an #abortion, even though significant numbers of minor pregnancies are caused by incest.

You've made it that "irresponsible" sex that leads to the creation of new life forces women to carry to term. OK. What is your justification?

Lets extrapolate.
Clearly the value placed on human life is high enough that you are seeking to protect the unborn.

Prioritising their well being over the pregnant woman. Even if you feel the woman has rights, you place the rights of the unborn first.
I don't feel this is an unfair appraisal of the situation...

Criminalising the act of abortion, as a deterrent. But what is it intended to deter?

Abortion - clearly. But is that the intention here? Isn't it "Promiscuous" sex that is the "sin" you are looking to combat?

Even “chipping away” at #RoevWade means deeply egregious restrictions on real rights, & enduring damage to real lives—especially women least able to afford or access care.
Ask the women of TX or those living in 22 states (not all red) about laws deterring & limiting access to abortions. With Kavanaugh’s appointment, the ‘Most Likely’ option = severe restrictions & free license for more states to follow.
Every outcome on abortion with Kavanaugh on #SCOTUS would result in women’s health & rights being fundamentally undermined. Call your Senator & share your story. #WhatsAtStake

Last night I promised a thread about #abortion before Roe v Wade legalized it nationally. Until the mid-1800s, common law allowed abortion until "quickening", when fetal movement can be felt. Toxic abortion remedies & doctors competing w midwives led to… 1/
laws outlawing abortion except where pregnancy was likely to be fatal spreading across the country. Bottled abortion remedies could be and were fatal, and doctors, almost all white and male, didn't want midwives competing with them for pregnancy care. 2/
