Back to trade and international law. What to expect from the new government? The government will negotiate a free trade agreement with the EU, with the goal of having little alignment and the consequence of a rather week FTA. (1/3)
Simultaneously it will start negotiating a trade agreement with the US. The US cannot and will not offer much in market access, but that does not mean that the government cannot reach an agreement it finds promising (2/3)
It can agree to more US style approaches (such as rejecting the precautionary principle and moving to evidence only-based standards) - not as a compromise UK/US, but as a shared preference between the Tory government and the US (3/3)
And another note: on international relations it is hard to believe the comments by a BBC reporter that big change is coming. Reminder: the government won the election, not the opposition. Where executive power rules supreme, don’t expect radical change.
