Together, we made history: @the3million and @BritishInEurope started as grassroots citizens' initiatives following the 2016 referendum and provided a united front when many people were trying to divide us for quick political gains. 
We are credited for raising #citizensrights to the top of the Brexit agenda before effectively influencing the EU institutions and the British Government to protect the rights of EU citizens in the UK and British nationals in the EU in the Withdrawal Agreement.

Many of us have known this for a while now but it's quickly becoming apparent that, especially after the recent #GeneralElectionResults2019, #Racism in the UK is, not only going to increase, but become even more brutal, widespread & acceptable, as #racists become emboldened by /1

This once again highlights how ludicrous it is that people who are granted settled status don't get any sort of document to prove it. The whole digital-only status is reliant on having an email address - it will be a nightmare to prove your status without one.

You may not know, but @the3million EU citizens who have to apply for (pre-)settled status (to be graciously given permission by the government to stay in their own homes 🤬), don't get any kind of physical proof of that status. So we have to trust a Govt digital system. So....

The Home Office PR team really don't like concerned EU citizens or laywers going on radio & TV and criticising their EU Settlement Scheme. They tweeted no less than 4 times about 1 single radio programme today. Trying to control the media message seems like their full time job.
Keep them busy. Speak to the media whenever you can and ask the difficult questions they want to avoid:

- What will happen to those who won't apply by the deadline?

The Home Office have produced a document hitting back at the criticism levelled against EUSS (the scheme most EU citizens must apply under to remain in the UK after Brexit). A few points on the objections to a declaratory style system: /1
Many have made clear that the consequences of forcing people to apply to stay in the UK will lead to people missing out on acquiring status. The @CommonsHomeAffs published a key report recommending citizens rights be granted automatically: parliament.uk/business/commi… /2

@the3million Something that I have not seen mentioned anywhere & that I think is *extremely* important on *why* people should NOT SETTLE for #PreSettledStatus, if they believe they're entitled to #SettledStatus instead, is that, apart from the principle of it, NO ONE knows whether or how /1

The #immigrationbill being debated today is not fit for purpose. I will vote against it because it undermines the #citizensrights of 3.6m EU citizens in the UK, threatening to put many under the hostile environment and making them at risk of detention and deportation.
It will force our NHS and other vital services into an even deeper staffing crisis. There are already 41,000 nursing vacancies in England. The salary threshold still under consideration would exclude many skilled medical staff, including nurses, paramedics and midwives.
It continues the inhumane practice of indefinite detention. We remain the only European country which does not set a time limit for detained migrants. This sullies our international reputation and undermines complaints we make about human rights abuses abroad.
Ok here's the thing, EU citizens in the UK were promised to continue their lives "as before".
But settled status is a lesser status & we need to apply, qualify & pay for it.
If you don't care about us, think about this: can you still trust the Govt with your own rights?

The Court gives short shrift to UK govt’s rather lame objections that this was a hypothetical question. The Court rules this is relevant by clarifying the options to MPs who must vote on whether to ratify the withdrawal agreement.
The Court also dismisses the Council/Commission’s arguments that agreement on revocation must be unanimous. That, says the Court, would be incompatible with the principle that a Member State cannot be forced to leave the Union against its will.

Thread 1) In response to this petition shared by @simonbruni, people have said the solution #citizensrights is to Remain in EU. They are right, but meantime many EU27 and EFTA citizens in UK live with insecurity and uncertainty over settled status. petition.parliament.uk/petitions/2201…

We asked MP @PeteWishart to get involved. His office deal with this type of issue frequently – it's not a one off, but part of the #HostileEnvironment. And what of EU27 citizens who can't afford the £1300+ to get citizenship? Or from countries which don't allow dual nationality?

My first experience in the UK was in 1997. My father got a temporary #NHS contract as there was a skill shortage. I attended the hospital's nursery for 7 months but my family chose to return to Romania. My mum was unemployed and my father had limited rights to work.
Meanwhile my parents got divorced. I attended a free school and skipped many classes in the last college years. Grew up mainly with "working class kids" sometimes doing dangerous things. But I achieved the highest grade in the Romanian Baccalaurate and this opened many doors.
