Plastic based #synthetic fabrics use 342 million barrels/ 5437 crore litres of #oil annually.

Some commonly used synthetic fabrics are #polyester, #nylon, #acrylic etc.

These #fabrics are made using fossil fuels and are #nonbiodegradable, hence they’re bad for our #environment.
Synthetic fabrics release #micro #plastics in the environment which can be #carcinogenic.
Let’s stay clear off them while future #shopping. But we don’t have to get rid of the ones we already own. We must take good care of our clothes, use what we already have till it wears out.
After the clothes wear off, we must either #upcycle or #recycle them.
Disposing our synthetic clothes in the bin means sending them off to the landfills & that just means a mountain of clothes for hundreds of years to come.

We believe #upcycling is the most #sustainablefashion.

Want to learn more about how black people in the U.S. suffer environmental racism today? Read my @RollingStone article on the new wave of heavily polluting fossil fuel operations being located in "cancer-alley:" black & poor communities across Louisiana.…
Spurred by the national oil and gas fracking boom, a new wave of industry expansions and mega facilities is pushing into Cancer Alley, an 85-mile stretch along the Mississippi between New Orleans and Baton Rouge. Much of the new infrastructure is dedicated to #plastics. /2
Already, with ExxonMobil, Koch, Shell & others operating 150 fossil fuel & petrochemical facilities here, 7 of the 10 census tracts with the highest cancer risk in the nation are in Cancer Alley, concentrated in areas with the highest % of black and poor residents. /3

1/4 Hi all! Welcome to my #WSTC6 #ContSesh2 thread!

The Gulf of Maine 🌊 (GoM) is grappling w/ huge changes due to ⬆️ human influences 🌑️.

We use Great Shearwaters (GRSH) as sentinels of the GoM to answer ?s abt pollutant occurrence & trends & how they may be impacting GRSH
2/4 #WSTC6 #ContSesh2 We necropsied 377 bycatch and stranded GRSH to collect samples and dem. info. Most birds were collected after foraging in GoM for several mths, but also obtained juvs on their way North, post-breeding adults. Sample subsets analyzed for range of pollutants.
3/4 #WSTC6 #ContSesh2 We found #plastics, #mercury, & #PFAS over time, bw life stages. Plstc ingestion diff. bw juvs & adults. Plstcs bw 4-10 mm, mostly polyethylene. Plstc freq higher than prev estimates. THg stable over time. PFAS in 8 tissues and appear to impact liver lipids.

#RM_Ott19 last panel @research_money on whole-of-govt initiatives to support #innovation. Moderated by @ChristineTrautt @CollegeCan, w/ Rob Wright ADM of @PSPC_SPAC, Wayne Moore @DFO_MPO, @NancyHamzawi ADM @environmentca, Andrea Johnston @ISED_CA, Gilles Saindon @AAFC_Canada
#RM_Ott19 RW says @PSPC_SPAC is looking beyond the usual vertical approach of governments, taking a more partnership view to drive success. WM @DFO_Science adds that bar has been set high for collab across departments, to get other ministers' / ADM's input and advice
#RM_Ott19 AJ @ISED_CA likes the "partnership" view, which aligns well with innovation portfolio of ISED. The federal family can be engaged in partnerships in one swoop (e.g. in Clean Growth Hub) rather than forcing external partners to reach out to depts separately
