I am conscious about having and keeping a healthy environment but liberals / progressives / environmentalists have rallied behind an extremely short-sighted policy. (Thread continues)

So first off, deforestation is already a problem and one that can be alleviated with production of paper products using quickly-growing help as part of the solution. Instead, we now need more paper products, and with less carbon in the air, less trees and less trees growing.
So now with these new paper products that don't work really well, consumers will require more of them to perform in a similar manner as their plastic counterparts. = more waste (although biodegradable hopefully)

CIEL experts will be at @UNFCCC Climate Conference #COP27 in Sharm El-Sheikh🇪🇬.

They'll be joining the negotiations, monitoring the ambition gap between what States have promised & what is necessary to address the #ClimateEmergency.

The 27th Conference of the Parties to the @UNFCCC, #COP27, is taking place as climate impacts are raging across the globe, from unprecedented floods in Pakistan to continued drought across Africa, record destruction by forest fires in Europe & intensified storms in North America.
Each recent devastating climate event underscores that the #ClimateCrisis is a #HumanRights crisis.

The only way out is by acting urgently to keep warming below 1.5°C, centering people in responses to the climate emergency 🫂 & equitably addressing its mounting impacts ⚖️.

Thank you @AOC I would not be silenced by @RepClayHiggins so let's talk about #petrochemicals in #Louisiana that are disproportionately killing Black people, shattering climate efforts and suffocating the world in plastic and other toxics. A thread.
#Petrochemicals, which are the toxic oil and gas products used to make plastics and pesticides, are #bigoil's big bet - set to be the main consumer of crude oil by 2050 they will shatter climate efforts like the #ParisAgreement:…
@RepClayHiggins' Louisiana is home to 150 #petrochemical plants - they are a part of the state’s ongoing legacy of #fossilfuelracism, and are killing Black and low-income residents.…

This week, people have been discussing if eating #oysters conflicts with following a plant-based diet.

Today, we’re taking a look at the definition of sentience and #veganism—and at animal species that have been proven to be more sentient than humans used to think. 👇1/14 Image
Although there is legal and scientific disagreement about #sentience, there are some standards that are broadly accepted.

According to @SentienceInst, sentience is simply the ability to have positive and negative experiences, including pain. 2/14
The concept of animal #sentience is important for ethical reasons.

If #animals are sentient beings capable of feeling pain, most humans would agree that it is morally wrong to cause unnecessary pain or suffering to them. 3/14…

@EthicalHourNews @BrendaChoi19 I'm other words, #Mattel corporation will, after 8 yrs, sell, as a successful, expdnding business, even more items, but each wrapped in 75% current environmentally catastrophic fossil-fuel-derived plastics. In short, @Mattel MIGHT do a little less wanton harm
@EthicalHourNews @BrendaChoi19 @Mattel This is how corporations trashing ecosystems, polluting & clogging, for millennia, oceans, soils, our bodies, with plastics, microplastics, toxic plastic breakdown products, cunningly deploy otherwise ethical organizations, institutions to do their marketing.
@EthicalHourNews @BrendaChoi19 @Mattel Let's not admire and praise ruthless, greedy, selfish companies, run by members of the #BillionaireClass, devastating environments, societies, whenever they issue, for PR purposes, proclamations of "green" proposals, not to stop, but slightly reduce the immense damage they do.

🆕 @VUamsterdam' s study found that nearly 80% of the meat & dairy products from farm animals tested by scientists contain #Microplastics.

🤯 Where does that plastic come from? Most likely it originates from livestock feed.

2/4 - The presence of #Plastics in livestock could originate from the intentionally added #Microplastics in pesticides and fertilizers used to grow animal feed.

3/4 - In March, VUA researchers reported #Microplastics in human blood for the first time.

The discovery of the particles in blood shows they are ubiquitous in our environment, food, and bodies.

Current research on microplastics is the stuff of nightmares-

They’re dangerous, they’re spread through our food, they're in the air... they’re everywhere

Thread 1/x

Much of the research is trapped behind paywalls, and only reported on in a limited, fragmented pattern

-like so much else when large corporations cause environmental damage and impose widespread health impacts on the public

The growing risks of microplastics are a direct function of an ongoing push by the same sociopathic corporations that are driving the climate crisis

These are our 5 takeaways from the #IPCC report on #mitigation, looking at what it means for the #waste sector. Spoiler: we need to cut emissions as fast and furious as we can, and reducing #waste, #plastic and being more materials efficient can help lots…
As the report points out, the #waste sector remains the largest contributor to urban emissions after the energy sector, even in low-carbon #cities. Urban areas themselves represent the lion’s share of global emissions, and it's increasing: from 60% in 2000 to 67% in 2015.
So, the @IPCC_CH #ClimateReport recognises that cities can significantly reduce emissions, but this requires systemic transformation: #circulareconomy, #inclusion, #equity, innovative technologies can make a huge contribution towards low carbon urban devel'mnt

The 5 takeaways

A thread 🧵
“The toxic threat of plastics is not only a human health issue, it's a #HumanRights issue.” — @mariawesterbos, @plasticsoupfoun's Director.

We couldn't agree more! #Plastics impact human rights at each stage of their life cycle.
The first session of the #PlasticHealthSummit draws the spotlight on the interconnection between environmental & human health.
Scientists are sharing their latest findings on plastics & blood, fetal development, & hormone-related disorders related to plastic.

NEW report by @SRtoxics makes clear: Plastics pose a threat to #HumanRights throughout their whole life cycle.
A human rights-based approach to #PlasticsPolicy is urgently needed to #BreakFreeFromPlastic & uphold #EnvironmentalJustice.
A thread 🧵
"It's urgent to address the interface of plastics & #HumanRights. The gaps & shortcomings in the area are posing a truly global threat. A rights-based approach to the plastics lifecycle can help prevent & redress human rights infringements." — @SRtoxics.
Indeed, from extraction to production, through transport, use, and disposal, plastics are impacting at least 10 of the most fundamental human rights.

Paradoxes of #FossilFuels that contribute to #CarbonLockIn, by @JPTilsted:
1. "Everywhere, yet [made] invisible" (slow violence is overlooked);
2. "needed" [claim producers] yet inherently problematic, history of self-regulation a failure;
3. Booming, yet sector in decline
#fossilfuel producers are adding massive capacity, boosted by #plastic production, but industry projections for "transformative change" continue to dispose (yellow) + mismanage (red) plastics. @JPTilsted at @LUCSUS_LU seminar 2/n
Who produces and owns #fossilfuels? Wide range of actors including int'l + national oil firms, states, but also petrochemicals, "emerging market firms". "co-evolution of energy and engineering." Indirect ownership hard to trace + reinforces lock-in, shows @JPTilsted 3/n

Plastic based #synthetic fabrics use 342 million barrels/ 5437 crore litres of #oil annually.

Some commonly used synthetic fabrics are #polyester, #nylon, #acrylic etc.

These #fabrics are made using fossil fuels and are #nonbiodegradable, hence they’re bad for our #environment.
Synthetic fabrics release #micro #plastics in the environment which can be #carcinogenic.
Let’s stay clear off them while future #shopping. But we don’t have to get rid of the ones we already own. We must take good care of our clothes, use what we already have till it wears out.
After the clothes wear off, we must either #upcycle or #recycle them.
Disposing our synthetic clothes in the bin means sending them off to the landfills & that just means a mountain of clothes for hundreds of years to come.

We believe #upcycling is the most #sustainablefashion.
