As much as I love everyone FINALLY embracing remote work from anywhere, been in this game for a while now…

In 2016, I set out to build a globally competitive AI #startup from Sault Ste Marie, Canada.

Here’s how that went:
I had a vision.
I had a dream.

I wanted to revitalize a steeltown with tech.

I wanted to prove that you could build best-in-class tech from ANYWHERE in the world. In 2016.

I was proven wrong.
I was literally laughed at by Toronto investors.

Most Waterloo investors didn’t believe my dreams could be possible up “North”.

I ultimately determined that local Soo investors would have been more likely to fund a cupcake shop than deep tech AI; despite endless attempts.

Freedom at work is a 💎 we all chase. It can be achieved with few simple practices.

Here’s what my engineering manager taught me.

This helped me immensely, and never looked back again.

#workfromanywhere #WFH #remotework
“What’s the status of the task, are you on track?” kinda messages are the most annoying ones at work.

We always say “Give me space”.
We always say “Trust me”.

How to get that space? How to have someone trust in you?
Truth is “Trust begins at 0”. We have to consciously build it. Once built, it’s like a fortress, ~never falls. It then yields to freedom, space & independence. And usually rewarded with more-responsibilities and ultimately leadership.

Who doesn’t want to be a leader, eh?

This is why Work from Home (#WFH) will succeed - as demonstrated by 'Telegraph writer and lead political analyst'

Would every office worker etc like an extra £5,280 per year - post tax? Ie. a >£10k pay rise for low income earners* or gradate tax payees?

Did you know that the average office worker spends £5,280 /yr to go to work?

Did you know that margin tax rates for graduates earning above £27k is 50% and for minimum wage income earners losing UC the rate is 44% - which is why you need ~ £10k / yr - in pre tax income!
NB. there are tax rises coming next April, fuel increases and inflation kicking in - so all these 'go to work' costs will rise!

Equally, you can spend £5k / yr savings on other things - maybe upgrade your home heating / insulation?

For some businesses, this is good news!

In this @SandipGhose is bang on by pointing out that YES India Inc did falter & took their eyes off the ball. Almost everything that the writer says it's very valid. However I think it also needs some wider introspection - not to defend India Inc - but to…
better appreciate the challenges. 1) India geographically has so little space that the so called social distancing is a non implementable idea not becoz a factory or office can't do it but becoz unless society can do it, anything else done within a private space is a cruel joke
2) With extremely poor healthcare, education & digital infra in non mega urban locations nobody in their right mind will want to shift esp when it involves taking a salary cut. In the Indian context orgs may actually need to pay higher for people to move out of cities 3) When

It is a currently a buyer's market in #Singapore due to the #Covid19 crisis hence property developers have to price property conservatively.

If you're #Singaporean, here's a thread on why you might want to consider a new private property 🏘️ in Singapore:

2/ Prior to 2013, people could easily flip #property and make tens of thousands just by buying an option to purchase.

Fast forward to 2013, various measures were introduced (#TDSR, #ABSD, #SSD)

This curbed demand lead to - /3…
3/ How is the #Singapore #RealEstate market different today?

- Healthy demand and less speculative buying
- Ample liquidity & low interest rates
- Declining unsold supply
- People are upsizing due to Work From Home (#WFH) changes…

Will WFH related HR and Management policies be a crucial factor in employee retention for firms ? COVID seems to be around much longer than we all hoped ;

Talking to some of my industry colleagues, especially at senior positions, I get to hear different voices.

Ones who are good at delegation of work at office seemed more receptive to idea of longer WFH policies & may even be fine to perpetualise the arrangement.

Managers who prefer to see their reportees in front are less amenable to the idea, as they fear lack of control &

mask their insecurities with reasoning of productivity etc.

Employee perspective is very important while crystallising policies. Resources are more likely to evaluate job options more on HR policies concerning #WFH

Firms that have management push on accommodative #WFH

Announcement from @fordnation sank my heart today. As an ER doctor, person of color and #Scarborough native, I feel defeated 😢. The measures are not going to get wave 3 under control. #BIPOC #ERdoc @SHNcares @torontolife @JustinTrudeau @SCMirror 1/
When I landed as an #immigrant in #Canada, my life started in #Scarborough. My parents (#heros) struggled to find jobs that matched their education. That didn't stop them from working hard / hustling even if it meant 2 jobs at times to keep bills paid and food on the table. 2/
My family lived in an apt building that had mostly racialized/middle-low income families (#affordability). Not much social distancing when large crowds wait for elevators (#EssentialWorkers) or use the shared laundry facilities. This pandemic brings back those vivid memories 3/

Question for the #WFH crowd, technically this is #marchbreak in Ontario; pre covid, this would be a quiet meeting week out of respect for parents of young kids and general family time. But not this year...1/
I have more meetings and calls this week than average which is fine for me as my kids are out of school, but what exactly are parents of young kids doing this week? Shouldn’t we all have hit a bit of a ‘pause’ button? Which leads me to another question...2/
If the kids are not going back to in person learning next week, but parents all have to work, whether from home or in factories, warehouses, processing plants, who exactly is looking after the children? Has the whole province magically time travelled back to the 1950’s? 3/

#WFH fatigue is real — which is why I'm challenging my team to streamline or cut back on select meetings so we actually have the time and space to think and innovate. Don't know where to start? Here are 3 exercises we use at @googlecloud to help prioritize everyone's time:
Exercise 1:
Pick three meetings in the next calendar week that you can shorten, cancel/decline, or group with another meeting. Read my comment to this post for tips on how to pick which meetings you should cancel.
To help identify these meetings, ask yourself:
- Do you have any meetings where the key decision-makers aren’t able to join the meeting, or where information critical to achieving the meeting goal is not yet available?
- Is your participation necessary? What is your role?

THREAD ⚠ Effective 12:01 am March 13, the Avalon region will move to Alert Level 4 and areas outside the Avalon will move to Alert level 3.
2️⃣ We must be mindful that while our provincial epidemiology is in a very good place, the same cannot be said outside the province. We therefore remain at risk of importation of the virus and the variants of concern that are now in greater circulation.
3️⃣ We saw first-hand how rapidly the B117 variant spread in our province. That’s why we must ease restrictions slowly. We will closely monitor the epidemiology as we open to ensure that there is no increased transmission.

The world pop'n is 7,850,000,000,000

UK pop'n is 68,000,000

#HS2 will cost £170,000,000,000 at least,
likely several times that

That works out at £22 for each human being on Earth
. . . or £2,500 for every person living in the UK

Did you know the wealthiest people in the world are no longer rich from REAL ESTATE?

They are rich from TECHNOLOGY.

Time for a thread 👇👇👇

After the financial crisis when housing ownership peaked in America — fuelled by NINJA MORTGAGES = NO INCOME, NO JOB, and NO ASSETS...

Technology titans quietly BUT swiftly moved into the top spot!

What’s even more fascinating is that the Real Estate sector has been the most resistant to innovation.

the plastic surgeon i spoke to last week said cosmetic procedures have boomed since lockdown started, mainly for 2 reasons. 1) people that always wanted a procedure done, but never had enough leave days to recover, can now recover secretly at home, since #wfh is a thing...
2) people do not like the way they look like on zoom! seeing themselves on video has made them self conscious, and motivated them to do something about it. zoom dysmorphia is real!
fyi, if you want to look better on your video calls, great lighting is everything! normal house lights or a dinky little ring light might not be enough 😘

1. Responsible for #GlobalDigitalTransformation and fast-tracking.

2.Reduction of #GlobalCO2 emission.

3.Five million jobs #restructuring.
4.#GlobalHygiene initiatives:
Ensured 100% compliance on washing hands..leading to collateral reduction of other communicable diseases

5 Made global industry shift to #WFH - saved exposure & costs
6 Reduction in global noise pollution by making everyone keep their mouth shut (while masked).

7. Taught cooking, vegetable shopping, housekeeping to many.

8. Highlighted the importance of governance, adaptability and long term planning, by all sectors.

#Thread I had asked people to share 3 good things that they did/happened to them in #2020 on @Facebook @Twitter and @instagram. Totally more than a 1000 people replied, of different ages, different professions, different regions. The comments were full of insights for me.
Lesson 1. The responses were very diverse, but some common things stood out. Most people mentioned ‘spending time with the family’ as one of the top positives of this year. And indeed, #WFH as well as the forced lockdown has made us all look at family togetherness in a new light.
Lesson 2. Most respondents also mentioned focus on wellness and health as a key area saw improvement. Many people shared inspiring stories of weight loss, of starting an exercise regimen, yoga, meditation, practices that helped improve both physical as well as mental health.

This feature of @JessicaCalarco 's work on #PandemicParenting was all over my feed yesterday, rightly so. It’s the most accurate & validating take I’ve read yet. Read it, because... 1/… makes for an important contrast w/ work like this:…

Yes, #womeninSTEM are underrepresented & #COVID childcare demands are pushing them out.

Yes, increased funds, RA support & teaching/service releases are much needed. 2/
But what about folks like me? I’m a quantitative social scientist. My work is entirely secondary data analysis. I’m not conducting experiments, running a lab, or engaged in any regular tasks of bench science. 3/
