The president's decision on #Syria based on the empty #EndlessWar rhetoric paved the way for #Erdogan & #Turkey's invasion and will be strategically disastrous for American interests for years to come as I explain👇
We chose the #Kurds as our proxy precisely because we didn't want to fight #EndlessWars - they did the heavy lifting for us. The president could have explained how he accomplished all this with his "infinite wisdom" while other presidents did not, as I explain here 👇
One outcome, among the many bad outcomes in #Syria will likely be the resurgence of #ISIS, which makes this an even worse decision than the premature withdrawal from #Iraq by Obama and #Biden. There's no excuse here. We've seen this happen before, as I explain 👇
For some reason whenever the president talks to #Erdogan on the phone, he ends up giving away US leverage - in exchange for bad outcomes for the US. Yes, people can say it's not a surprise since Trump broadcast his intention to leave for a long time. It's bad policy then and now
The ridiculous #EndlessWar claim seems to believe that our enemies give a flying 🤬 about our feelz. They fight us, whether we want to engage or not. Successive presidents think they can re-write history & choose which conflicts already happened. We must face reality not fantasy.
We've seen in the past when Trump has reversed himself on #Syria policy. Yes we should still hope for that. But he has completely destroyed the credibility of the very team he put in place to carry out his policy, no matter what. It will make it hard to maintain alliances.
I was also asked to explain @LindseyGrahamSC's thinking on #Syria (and others like him) and why it differed from his view on #Ukraine in the overall context of the Democrat push for #impeachment. I took a stab at it below👇
@LindseyGrahamSC From a NatSec standpoint, Syria makes Republicans ask what kind of deal will he cut with #Iran if the president made such a bad deal with #Erdogan & is willing to undermine the pillars of his MidEast policy (#Iran, #ISIS, #Israel) w/o recognizing how they're all linked in Syria?
@LindseyGrahamSC All of which brings me back to a point I made earlier: "We are at a remarkably stupid time in American history when it comes to politics." 🤷‍♂️
