On Saturday, wind power generated 25% of Europe’s electricity!
Denmark: 95%
Germany: 71%
Portugal: 28%
UK: 28%
NL: 27%
Belgium: 26%
Lithuania: 25%

Saturday was a massive wind power day in Germany. 35-45 GW of wind (light green) turned off gas and hardcoal, pushed down lignite (brown coal) a lot, and even triggered some throttling down of nuclear power plants. Wholesale prices around zero.
Thanks to these windy days, Germany is still on track to exceed 40% renewable electricity this year, for the first time ever! Year-to-date shares:
Wind 20%
Solar PV 9%
Biomass 8% (mostly biogas)
Hydro 3%
Total renewables 40.1%
Nuclear 13%
Fossil 47%
Many of you have noted Ireland was missing, probably due to a data issue. At this moment, wind provides 39% of Irish electricity (2143 MW). Yesterday it was constantly at or above this level, so must have been 40% or so. Would have been 3rd place! live.windenergy.ie
And, as @StefBaly points out, Germany hit a new record daily share of renewable electricity as well: 75.7% on Saturday, beating Christmas Eve 2017, when the renewable share hit 74.1%.

Germany made it! Over 40% renewable electricity* in 2018, for the first time ever. After 38.2% in 2017, now 40.4%.
Nuclear 13.3%, fossils 46.3%

In 15 years, the share of renewables in German electricity quintupled, from 8.5% in 2003 to 40.4% in 2018.
Since just before its nuclear exit (2010), it gained 21%-points.
That meant that renewables were able to replace the electricity from the nuclear power plants shut down since 2011 (Fukushima), and reduce electricity from gas (-35%) and hard coal (-25%) at the same time. Lignite (brown coal) use remained stable, due to its low marginal cost.

The often mentioned changes in residential energy taxes proposed are less than spectacular. Gradual increase in tax on fossil gas: +€0.10/m3 by 2029. Would mean +€150/year for an average household not reducing gas use over that period. But: €65 fixed reduction in energy tax...
.. and reduction of tax on electricity by €0.03/kWh over the same period. That’s -€90/year for an average household.
Net result: zero. Or negative, if the household saves energy.
The shift from electricity to gas is to bring taxes more in line with CO2 emissions.

Since I have a CO2 monitor, I know that 600 ppm of CO2 in a room starts make me feel I could use some fresh air. Aside from climate disruption, do we realize that’s were we’re heading for our *outside* air under not-too-extreme emissions scenarios?

And, given that sensitivity of the human body and brain to CO2, might it be that the jump in atmospheric CO2 from 278 ppm (pre-industrial) to the present 410 ppm already has an effect on us?
Or, come to think of it, could it be that I'm already affected by the difference between the 325 ppm in the air around us when I was a kid, and the 410 ppm that we experience now?

2) If #Russia annexes #Belarus, then #Putin will forward deploy his tanks to #Poland's border & the doorstep of #Lithuania's capital #Vilnius. He will also threaten #Ukraine's capital #Kyiv from the #North and it will be easy for Russian troops to close the #Suwalki Gap.

3) #Poland's best brigades are based near #Germany. They must move East to protect #Warsaw & be an operational reserve to come to the aid of #Lithuania. Poland also needs more tanks; & modern attack helicopters, infantry fighting vehicles, fighters, guided missile artillery.

1 - To cut #energy consumption
2 - To turn away from #fossilfuels
3 - To diversify its #energy mix

The overall target of France's strategy for #energy and #climate is to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 through cutting GHG emissions down significantly and also increasing carbon sinks
France wants to cut #CO2 emissions down to 227 Mt in 10 years by cutting final #energy consumption 14% and primary #energy from #fossilfuels by 35%. Also, increasing #renewable heating and doubling the #electricity from renewables. Note: transport emissions vanish by 2050.
