I had attended a webinar recently and learnt something incredibly unique! I discovered that you could be a Data Scientist, but having a #specialisation is IMPORTANT!

What is a "specialisation"? How many kinds of specialisations are there in #DataScience Domain?

Thread🧵 Image
*Specialisation*
One can acquire all the skills of a Data Scientist, but having specialisation in a particular skill can set you apart from the rest. It can be anything! You can analyse data as no one else; data visualisation or database management (#DBMS) could be your niche.🤩
☑️Data Visualisation
If you have a knack for producing beautiful graphical representations from the data, this could be your domain of specialisation, and you could become a Data #Visualisation Engineer. Image

Lately I have been talking to some students and friends about various places to look for academic positions. Because there is no ONE-FOR-ALL space to find opportunities, here is a thread summarizing the ones I know of 1/34 #AcademicTwitter #phdchat #phd #internationalPhD
Having said that, I must emphasize that this #database is skewed towards #Asians and #Indians (and other #internationals) to study in #EU #UK or #USA in general and is certainly not exhaustive. I have no info. on #NSF grants for example or grants within India. 2/34
Most importantly, I’m hoping this thread helps #colouredwomeninSTEM & #WomeninSTEM, please feel free to RT. And as a #biologist, I am more aware of databases in #ecology, #wildlife, #evolution and #conservation circles, feel free to add more and share. Let’s dive right in! 3/34

1/ This excellent study by @aaronmring/@VirusesImmunity and team found that COVID-19 patients exhibit dramatic increases in the production of antibodies against thousands of human extracellular and secreted proteins (the exoproteome) compared to controls 👇
2/ The million dollar question is: what molecular mechanisms underly this antibody/#autoantibody production? It is worth interpreting the findings via the lens of human #microbiome/#virome activity + the activity of persistent pathogens (such as EBV) harbored by study subjects.
3/ Every study subject harbored extensive microbiome/virome communities comprised of trillions of organisms during #COVID-19 infection…with such ecosystems now understood to persist beyond just the gut but also in other body sites (#lung, liver etc).

Yesterday one of my colleagues asked me about how to boost MongoDB performance.
I explained to him, and now it's worth sharing:

Performance tuning for #MongoDB :

1. Create custom indexes for your queries.
see: docs.mongodb.com/manual/indexes/

Thread 👇

#javascript #Nodejs
2. If you use mongoose always use "lean", by default mongoose queries return an instance of Mongoose Document class, and these are much heavier than vanilla javascript objects.

#javascript #Database #MongoDB #NoSQL
3. Reuse connections (Connect once, use multiple times):

Don't connect and disconnect DB every time you query something. You should connect once,
at the beginning of your app.

Setting up a new TCP Connection is expensive time-wise, memory, and network wise.

What are some database engines that works great with serverless architecture?

#database #CodeNewbie #Serverless #javascript
Note to Self: MongoDB can be used with serverless functions by caching the initial connection.
database engines were designed much before the serverless architecture was a thing.

a connection to the database is always persistent. meaning, it lasts for a really long time.
also, there is a limit(imposed by DBaaS provider) on how many connections a database can have at any given timestamp.

a lambda function is invoked every time a client(generally, browsers) creates a connection. this means a new connection to the database as well.

Yesterday I had to work on a backfill script to update 24 Million records of payments. Yes, you read right, 24 million. The script ran for 3 hours and wasn´t even at half.

We found several ways to improve its performance today.
Summary below 👇

#SQL #Database
The first thing was to be able to check performance to make sure we were improving it. So, a sample size of 20k records updates instead of 24 million.

Original query took around 36 seconds. We ended up making this take only 6 seconds, and I think we can´t improve it more now.
1_ Removed an unnecessary join table. We were updating based on a list of descriptions values joined instead of using direct codes. Easier to read by humans, slower for computers. We are at 32 seconds now.

The GROUP BY clause groups a set of rows into a set of summary rows by values of columns or expressions.

The GROUP BY clause returns one row for each group. In other words, it reduces the number of rows in the result set.
We often use the GROUP BY clause with aggregate functions such as SUM, AVG, MAX, MIN, and COUNT.

The aggregate function that appears in the SELECT clause provides information about each group.
