If you need a case study in why @AGBecerra needs to make certain DNT universal opt-out signals are clearly honored by all parties and Google/Facebook need to stop tracking across websites under CCPA, take a look at LA Times roll-out today. /1 membership.latimes.com/privacy-settin…
RevContent is a poster child company almost no user would know exists nor would want mining their personal data. More importantly, users don’t want to have to visit 5 different sites to opt out of hundreds of ad tech companies who are the ones users don’t want tracking them. /2
And to be clear, the only easy thing to opt out of here is LA Times which is the site the user likely trusts and intended to visit and give their business. DNT is the only simple way for users to opt out of third party tracking including Facebook and Google. /3
Lastly, it’s remarkable any company would tell users they need to turn off cookies or tracking prevention (see Firefox, Safari, Brave), which have provided the best option against tracking, in order to ensure their choice to not be tracked is honored. /4
This is all 🤦🏽‍♂️. It’s Jan 1st. Enforcement starts 7/1. A completely unbridled ad tech ecosystem which tracks users across their lives is why we have CCPA. Google, Facebook and their lobby have long set bar here and selfish defense of their $ is destructive to these new rights. /n
