1/ In 2015, the UK became the first country to implement a protein-based Meningococcal B vaccine (4CMenB) into the infant immunisation programme

Here, we show that vaccinated kids are now infected with different MenB strains than unvaccinated kids…🧵

👉journalofinfection.com/article/S0163-…
2/ We recently showed that the UK 4CMenB infant immunisation programme is highly effective in preventing #meningitis/septicemia caused by group B meningococcal bacteria (MenB), the predominating serogroup (strain) causing invasive disease in Europe

👉 nejm.org/doi/full/10.10…
3/ Since then we also showed 4CMenB can also protect against other meningococcal serogroups such as MenW because the proteins in the 4CMenB vaccine are present on the surface of all meningococci (not just MenB)

Are the social distancing measures damaging our immune systems? Less contact = reduced infection rates.
For example, the number of reported whooping cough cases during the reporting period 2020/2021 is less than 5% of that of the previous year
1/
@PHE produce weekly updates on statutory notifiable diseases and usefully provide comparisons to previous years. As might be expected, there has been significant decline in all. A few more graphs below to illustrate this 👇
2/
As well as whooping cough, there are significantly fewer reported cases of #meningococcal septicemia, acute #meningitis, #measles and #mumps

News on #vaccines against #COVID19 is very encouraging. Its timely to remember the fantastic impact that other vaccines have had over the last 200 yrs in Ireland - apart from clean water, vaccines have saved more lives than any other public health intervention @HSEImm @RCPI_news
In 1863 vaccination against smallpox was made compulsory for all children born in Ireland. Deaths fell from 7,550 for the decade to 1880 to the last reported death here in 1907. Smallpox was declared eradicated in 1979 – this one vaccine saved 100s of millions of lives globally. Image
Diphtheria was a very common cause of death among children until the 1940s - there were 318 deaths reported in 1938. With the introduction of a vaccine, the number of deaths fell year on year with 5 deaths in 1950; the last death notified from diphtheria was in 1967. @HSELive Image

Nigeria has made a lot of progress in preparing and responding to disease outbreaks and epidemics. I remember my early days of public health; some 15yrs ago it's @WHONigeria that prepared and shared the #weeklyepidemiological report for Nigeria... a thread!

For every outbreak or public health emergency in Nigeria, we heard more about @WHO who appeared to be at the forefront with @Fmohnigeria and its agencies; old #NPI which merged with @NphcdaNG fought #polio with the support of @WHO @UNICEF @Rotary etc.

With time the #Epidemiology unit of @Fmohnigeria grew in strength and capacity to lead the response. They also produced and sent out the weekly epidemiology reports for Nigeria, which hitherto was shared by @WHONigeria in collaboration with FMOH for sure. #Clap4NCDC

There is a thin line between contributing to knowledge through research and prioritising public health response during outbreaks. For us at @NCDCgov, our responsibility is to find the right balance, as they are interdependent.
#NCDCSundayReflections
Both research and response are critical. We can not do one without the other. It is important for countries especially like ours, to focus on building strong foundations. Supporting communities to improve health systems that will build trust and save lives
Over the last 3 years, there has been an increased interest of global institutions- public health, research and funding institutes, in the work we do especially in response to #meningitis #Lassafever #monkeypox. We need research to develop new tools to improve response
