First and foremost, while having a decent reach on this account, i barely use it.

I actually feel more at ease to casually communicate #gamedev stuff on my personnal @dragutux account, but not with the same reach.

tweet 2/?
The main problem, which i could bear with is that this personal account was intended for micro blogging, having fun while still be decent.
The problem is twitter changes, drastically. It basically ruined my timeline with the new content i seen being trash at best.

So some people have been having fun embracing an hour of chaos with Anarchy Goat. One thing people keep mentioning is that it vibes like I got the bugs in those Goat & Goose games meshed in. A couple asked for #TTRPG design advice.

Honestly? It's both purposeful AND accidental.
*For me*, I have a strong sense of "vibes" and aesthetic in the art I enjoy. So for me, it comes down to starting with a strong sense of what genre, themes, and just general aesthetic I'm going for. What is the core concept? How do I initially imagine it playing out?
For this there was a conversation here that spurred me on. Plus I generally like wild chaos games and animal stuff. Like I made an Everyone Is John hack called Just A Normal Human about a horde of critters pretending to be human. So, right in my weird lane [embrace *your* weird].

1/8 INCOMING LOVEFEST THREAD!

We played a LOT of games in 2022. And fell in love with a lot of them as well. Now while they all can't get #GOTY, we can give out a bunch of silly awards to show these games just how much they mean to us.

Our 'The Best RPG That None Of Us Talked About Award' goes to @ChainedEchoes!

@arkheiral is our hero. We didn't talk about your amazing game at all in 2022. Let's fix that. We have a cozy spot waiting for you on our podcast.

In 2022 I set a New Year's resolution to ship 12 small indie games. With a full time job and kids this was tough.

I've now shipped my 12th game! One was even picked up by a festival. If you want to do something similar for games/writing/coding/art/etc,here's what I learned: 🧵👇
1/ NEVER HAVE A ZERO DAY: My ability to be prolific this year is from this. I set a low bar of 15 minutes every day. If I missed, I made sure I didn't miss two in a row. Even if I was unmotivated and not starting until 11:45pm, I could still get in 15 minutes and call it a win.
2/ A BAD SESSION IS STILL A WIN: Within a coding session if I didn't finish as much as anticipated, I felt like a failure. "My only time today was wasted on this stupid bug I didn't even fix!" But I learned it's still a win because I put the time in.Tomorrow progress will be made

FEEDBACK IS EVERYTHING
I was amazed by this short footage.
The game responds to every player’s action with a tone of feedback!
So I decided to break down what makes it so tactile and alive and counted 27 methods.
1/15
#gamedev #GoMechaBall #madewithunity #indiegames #vfx
EFFECTS
1) The ball leaves dust and a trail that has a fixed lifetime, thus it stretches when the ball moves faster - conveying speed
2) Dust ring, sparks, and distortion effect on dashing with the spider - conveying dashing feel
2/15 Image
3) The ball has an orange effect - responding to dashing
4) There is dust on the character's steps - adding life to the movement
5) Shells fly out on every shot - adding feel to the shooting and changing environment for a time

Not sure how to make the most of your Steam game page?

Even though it’s your #1 marketing & discoverability asset?

Then damn you’re just like everyone else! 😆

So here’s a short thread of things to consider when building your page:

🧵✨👇

#gamedev #indiedev Image
1️⃣: Don’t delay it!

Get your Steam page up as soon as you announce or unveil your project! 📣

The sooner your page is up, the more time you’ll have to earn early wishlists and start building a core community around your game! 📈
😬 Yes, caveats already. When to announce is a topic of its own...

Wishlists & player interest (hype) has entropy.

If you don’t think you can pull off a year of regular updates and community building (i.e. creating hype)… then don’t. 📉

Just stick to 3 - 6 months. 👌

DON'T CALL YOUR INDIE GAME THAT

I've been doing some work on naming games lately and I wanted to share my toolkit, which is based on the naming workbook Don't Call It That by @elialtman. (I have used it so many times, thank u Eli.)

#indiegames #gamedev
Here is a place to buy the full workbook for your naming needs, btw: magma-shop.com/products/dont-…

First up, some general framing thoughts which I like to keep in mind:
When naming, it’s best to play off of connections that people already have in their heads. This way, when they hear your name, a picture will appear.

Naming becomes a lot easier when you have an objective—one thing you want the name to communicate.

Prediction: sometime soon there's going to be a slice of life spin-off about the domestic life of Krillin (the ultimate Wife Guy) and Android 18 and it's gonna be a smash hit.
Shueisha please make me an editor 🙏
I earnestly think they're a great couple! Krillin is just horny enough to forgive Android 18 for mass murder / genocide. But it goes deeper than that. He realizes that she was turned into a killing machine against her will. He has sympathy for her when no one else does.

I've asked you about the best ways you know to market your game. Here are your answers:
#indiedev #indiegame #indiegames #IndieGameDev #gamedev #gamedevs #GameDeveloper #gamedevelopment #videogame #videogames #gamers #gaming #indiegaming
Leading Answer: Build a community organically. You can do this by doing two things

First off, stay active and consistent in posting progress about your project. Gifs and Videos are best. Post even if you feel like you have nothing to show
Secondly, engage with other creators - help them when possible, be social, try to grow THEIR project. What goes around comes around

Hit just over $3800 for food banks & supportive housing! Our donor extended the #charity #gamesale until we hit our $4000, as we're so close! PWYW sales are matched for the fund. They're also keeping the lifetime subscription subsidy. Help us close out strong! #ttrpg #indiegames
1) Wanna say how awesome the #ttrpgfamily is to get us this far! Support has been overwhelming.

2) Could use another #TTRPGsolidarity boost to help close out. Only TWO lifetime subs would put us over $4000 raised. We know y'all can make that happen quick with a boost! Pls & TY!
@LeoBenucciDM,@nerdicted,@OldGitsnDragons, @dndworldtweets, @WillSavePodcast, @AbyssalBrews, @BreeGoodbarrel, @MaddNichol121, @TheWigglyPlant, @killface18: Can we tag a few solidarity people in for a last boost on this? We'd love to take up our donor's generosity & hit our goal!

1/1 New program for #TTRPG #gamedesign newbies! With the launch of the Motif SRD, we're offering to help a few new RPG designers build their own Runs On Motif Licensed games.
Step 1 is to check out the SRD and give it a solid read.
drivethrurpg.com/product/361409…
#indiegamedev
2/2 Step 2. Pitch us your Runs On Motif Licensed game ideas.

Summarize the general concept, who players are/what they can do, & describe the intended genre/themes/feel of it. If you have some mechanics ideas, that's great. But we'll help with that.

#TTRPG #indiedev #indiegames
3/3 Step 3. We select a handful for the first round and walk them through developing their games. There is no cost except for a requirement to append a statement about the mentorship to the Attribution Text for the Motif SRD and consulting credit.

The #TTRPG market is so weird in that it has a shocking number of titles promoted for a given style whose systems just do not do that. It is pretty much the norm. This covers everything from #TRPG titans to smaller #indiegames.
If you randomly name a #TTRPG and look at how it is marketed (by both the publisher(s) and fans) vs what it actually does, you have at least a 50/50 shot of naming an example. (Unless you're way deep into one of a few #TRPG #indiegame niches.) It's an endemic issue.
We can even leave #DnD and its derivatives completely out of it. The problem with #TTRPGs still remains. It is still the norm to have rulesets that do not do what they say or at best (or perhaps worse depending on POV) the description is technically correct but deeply misleading.

(1/9) A thread on the most important learnings I share with developers who ask me for advice on launching their debut indie game on Steam (in 2020 or beyond):

#indiegame #indiegames #IndieGameDev #gamedev
(2/9) Your pre-launch wishlist count matters. It impact the surfacing of your game store-wide, and a huge portion of your sales are going to come from wishlist conversions.

Steam users who have wishlisted your game get an e-mail when your game launches or is discounted at >=20%.
(3/9) The most lucrative section your game can be in is in "Top Selling" globally or regionally. These are automatically calculated very frequently based on revenue velocity so it's important to generate sudden massive spikes in sales which require large wishlists.

Hi #gamedev #indiegames are you wondering if your Steam page traffic is normal? How much traffic should be converting? Is a 10% wishlist conversion rate good? I surveyed a bunch of games that appeared in the Steam Summer Festival 1 month ago and got some data ...👇🧵👇🧵📈📉📊
First. Details: Developers volunteered this data via a survey. In total, data for 56 games were submitted to me. There were 900 games in the festival. I reached out to developers who had very visible games. So take all that with a grain of salt when looking at "average" numbers.
Each blue bar in this chart is a game. The Y-axis is # of wishlists it earned over the week of the festival. A couple games ran away with it though. The Riftbreaker is #1 in this chart and earned over 41,096 wishlists that week. Not sure if it was #1 earner in the whole festival. Image

It’s Saturday, so we’re gonna talk game tech! Binding of Isaac. No Man’s Sky. Killsquad. Different on the surface but, under the hood, a common approach. Today, we deep dive on procedural world generation for games! #gamedev #indiedev #IndieGameDev #indiegames #UE4 #unreal
If you want replay value, procedural is the way to go. Instead of building everything by hand, and enjoying it once, in a procedural approach you start with primitive elements, and rules to combine them, to build a game you can replay with a different experience every time.
This can be more or less complex. On one end, enter @NoMansSky, where everything is procedural, from plants to full planets. Here the load goes on the “rules” side, with exotic math paving the way. Wanna know more about it? This article is a great start: 3dgamedevblog.com/?p=836
