In 2013 I was still in uniform when @SenGillibrand held the 1st Senate hearing on #sexualassault in the #military in almost a decade as then Chairwoman of the Armed Services Subcmittee on Personnel

8 yrs later her own colleagues could continue to impede progress

In that time the Air Force Basic Training Sex Crime Scandal was a big national crisis.

43 women publicly alleged they were victimized by 17 accused male military instructors during & after basic military training beginning in 2009. Offenses ranged from abuse of power to rape. ImageImage
It’s easy to forget but 2013 was a historic year in our long time battle against military sexual violence.

Remember the senior officer who ran the Air Force's Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Office arrested & charged w sexual battery at DC bar?…

Defense Secretary @SecDef Austin:

"We will work with Congress to amend the Uniform Code of Military Justice, removing the prosecution of sexual assaults and RELATED crimes from the military chain of command."

Related crimes = appears to be a significant limit here.
2. The next line in @SecDef's statement also suggests his support is limited to sexual assault and specifically related crimes.

This has to be one of most effective analytic takedowns of another side's argument.

Jeh Johnson wrote a deeply flawed piece opposing @SenGillibrand @SenJoniErnst's legislation on #SexualAssault in military.

This by @rachelv12 is a master class.👇…
2. One example

Johnson rhetorically claims: "A military commander must have legal authority over those in a unit...The two must be inseparable."

VanLandingham with the facts: "Demonstrably false given the thousands of U.S. military commanders" without any such legal authority.
3. "Mr. Johnson...warns that Congress shouldn’t fix what isn’t broken, and should leave everything but sexual assault crimes alone.

Fact: Court-martialing Black service members at a rate twice that of their white counterparts is a broken system in need of repair. Period."

“A bad faith act indeed,” read the statement of @rights_4_time partner the Palestine Trauma Center, reacting to the proposed cuts to our network project, which they have put countless hours into.
The announcement was a shock, as PTC staff were already “stretched thin...adapting [Mental Health] care in the context of COVID-19.”
“Cancelling the project renders Palestinian time & attention given to the project useless, & is ultimately a disservice to our community of children and educators” wrote our partner the @AjyalFoundation, upon news that @rights_4_time could be scrapped, downgraded, or cut short.

Hi #fundraisingtwitter. Some people seem confused as to why I, and may others, consider Mr. Ahern's comments and sessions offensive. I've had some genuine questions, so let me do my best to explain here.
Last month a conference called "Inspire Webinar Series" came out featuring a series of fundraising "legends". @_David_Lacey rightfully pointed out that 19 of the 22 panelists were white men. It was called out on Twitter and LinkedIn for being insulting.
Some speakers like @ToastFundraiser upon learning this stepped down. Instead of following suit, Tom Ahern wrote this post that included the words "In half a decade or less, the same worth of "listening-to" speakers won't be male or white." He also told everyone "F U" at the end

1. 🧵 Thinking of the family of #SarahEverard waking up to the horrible reality of her loss today. I recently spoke with a male interviewer about #GenderEquity & he was shocked when I spoke about not feeling safe as a woman. So I told him about my experiences... #TriggerWarning
2. When I was in college I was out for a run one day in the local woods. I heard a sound behind me and looked back and saw a guy running after me. No big deal right - he's probably out for a run too? Except he's wearing jeans, a suede jacket and boots...
3. I feel that stab of fear (that every woman has felt at some stage) & pick up the pace but I'm near the end of my session and tiring fast. He's gaining on me & I realise I can't outrun him (despite the fact I've represented Ireland in athletics) he's a man and he's just faster!

This is what happens when you report your assault in the @USMC He admits his guilt and then is retained by the Commanding General after everyone else recommended do not retain. @RepSpeier @SenGillibrand @KamalaHarris @SecDef this is bullshit. #metoomilitary #sexualassault
@CMC_MarineCorps you better make a phone call. This is completely UNSAT
Heyo! Friendly reminder what constitutes sexual assault. 👇

The only thing that will accomplish a reduction in military sexual violence is taking sexual assault cases out of the military chain of command, which this move by Austin doesn't do. Obama admin and Claire McCaskill killed such a proposal in 2013.…
As a director at a rape crisis center in NY at the time, we supported the Military Justice Improvement Act proposed by @SenGillibrand which would have done just that.
In that position, I led efforts to train the US Merchant Marine Academy on sexual assault prevention and response. Although not technically under the DOD, the @UsmmaO functions as a quasi-military organization.

Living Under a Death Threat:"Is it real?" That's the question from media mgmt when assessing an online/physical threat to journalists. The real question? "Will someone act on this threat?" The next dean @FAMUSJGC82 @FAMU_1887 this came to me at my home. Be ready. #FAMU133YEARS 1/ Image
This is a death threat. Received at my home in March 2020. Just as I was getting ready to go to court to get a cyberstalking injunction against some @FAMU_1887 "colleagues" who used #fakenews and #smearcampaign to #collude w @FAMUSJGC82 to get me fired. Or killed. 2/
This death threat came to my home...and threatened me, my family and another colleague. Why you ask, would someone want me dead or out of the way? And it's clearly @FAMU_1887 related because of OTHER MURDERS OF OTHER DEANS?!?! Are you reading this? @FAMUSJGC82 #FAMU133YEARS 3/ Image

New @SexOutLoudRadio!Professors @JenniferSHirsch & @shamuskhan are the authors of Sexual Citizens: A Landmark Study of Sex, Power, and Assault on Campus (from @wwnorton) based on brilliant research by them and a huge team about sexual assault on college campus. #sexualcitizens Image
Current #sexualassault discourses focus on toxic masculinity, consent, bystander intervention, adjudication—all important. @JenniferSHirsch & @shamuskhan take a new approach w/the concepts of sexual projects, sexual citizenship, & sexual geographies...#sexualcitizens
They share compelling stories of students navigating sexuality in a new environment; they don’t just focus on individual players but the systems that fail many of us. We talk about sex education (or lack thereof), power dynamics, inequalities, social status & peer pressure.

【日英対訳】宇佐崎しろ氏「アクタージュ読者の皆様へ」Translation of Usazaki Shiro's statement: "To the readers of #ActAge,"|2020.8.24| @tkatsumi06j #note… Now with bilingual introduction to add some context. #MeToo #WeToo #GropingIsSexualAssault
In translating this statement I took special care in the use of terminology that relate to sexual violence. As a professional translator and #HeForShe activist, I was particularly alarmed by the amateur translation of "強制わいせつ" as 'sexual harassment'. This is outright wrong.
By law, the definition of "強制わいせつ" is Forcible Indecency which is forcible enactment of sexually indecent acts against a person who is not under the age of 13. This is equivalent to sexual assault but NOT sexual harassment.

Online abuse takes many forms...including sexual predators who use anonymous tools to solicit explicit photos of students for money and favors. Male students. Good-looking students. And the sugar babies. Ground Zero: @FAMUSJGC82. I know. 😡 1/
As an administrator, my job was to ensure the safety of my students to pursue their academic careers. That was everywhere instruction occurred— in the @FAMUSJGC82 building, on campus, in internships, or online. Within my first month on the job, I would be challenged. 2/
We discovered a homeless person living in our building. He was gaining access to labs and hiding places in the building. We had video of him exiting the building and hanging out in library spaces @FAMUSJGC82. 3/

1/6 Yes, we should not be #slutshaming #HopeHicks.

But there are always questions to be asked and not just about her and not just about @MonicaLewinsky.
2/6 @MonicaLewinsky insists her relationship with @BillClinton was consensual.

But any critical theorist is going to raise at least an eyebrow at the power relationship between the president of the U.S. and an intern.
3/6 It's a little too easy to say in such cases that women have the right to name their own experiences, whether as assault, as rape, or as consensual. And yet we can't forget that they do.

So how do we navigate this?

#COVID19 has disproportionately impacted Black communities & other communities of color because of systemic racism. The #HEROESAct included some helpful provisions, but there are still serious gaps for #sexualassault survivors, including & especially survivors of color. [1/4]

1) Dedicated funding for culturally-specific organizations and Tribes to provide domestic violence and sexual assault services; [2/4]
2) $100 million in funding for the Sexual Assault Services Program to directly address the needs of sexual assault survivors; [3/4]

THREAD on #SexualViolence:

A woman does not need to fight back or resist in order to prove that she did not consent to unwanted sex. (Canadian sexual assault law does not require proof of resistance to demonstrate a lack of consent.) Nevertheless, in popular imagination
women are often expected to resist in order to prove that they really were “real” victims of sexual assault. This is one of the enduring #RapeMyths, that a “true” victim of sexual assault will fight back or scream and yell, and if she didn’t she must have consented to sex.
This mistaken idea simply fails to understand typical responses to sexual threat, coercion, intrusion and/or fear. Too often, sexual assault victims are asked, “Why didn’t you just fight back, or scream, or struggle, or run away?”

Dear @KimKamasa, I believe a trip down memory lane is long overdue. Don't you think? #Harassment #SexualAssault
It was a friday in Kimihurura at the  place that used to be Chapter One.  I was out with my brother, you were out with some older people including the one you introduced as a cousin of the president (like it was an achievement).
I introduced my brother and you told me you thought he was my boyfriend considering how we had taken control of the dancefloor.

Did I mention I was drinking soda and you were drinking whisky?

This is an incredibly difficult thing to write and put out there publicly. But I am fucking DONE protecting violent men (TW sexual assault) so here goes:
I'm upset that Johnny Issaluk has been chosen to receive an award from the Governor General of Canada, as well as an Indspire Award. I have written to both organizations asking them to retract their awards for him.
A decade ago, I cast him in one of my short films called Inuit High Kick. It’s a beautiful short film that I was very proud of, and he was magnificent in it. It played at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, and shown in many places over the world.

Inspired by the great @Zeddary thread, I present to you -

On the subject of @realDonaldTrump and #SexualAssault. A thread.
E. Jean Carroll accused Trump of sexually assaulting her in a department store in the mid-90s, and two friends confirmed having been told about the incident then. Trump denies having ever met her. Since the allegations went public, she keeps a loaded gun near her bed to sleep.
Kristin Anderson accused Trump of reaching up her skirt and touching her vagina through her underwear while with friends at a NYC nightclub in the early 90s. Though disgusted, they dropped the matter, thinking “Okay, Donald is gross. We all know he’s gross. Let’s just move on”.

In my neighbourhood there was a serial sex predator breaking into women's homes and sexually assaulting them in their own beds. It's bad enough that women routinely have to take more precautions than men to do basic things like go for a walk or a jog. 1/ #sexualassault #crime
I can't describe to you what it's like to be afraid to do something as necessary as falling asleep in your own bed at night. This is what happened to many women in my neighbourhood. 2/ #VAW
At the time this was going on, a lot of women talked to me about their fear, about being afraid in their own homes, being unable to fall asleep or stay asleep in their own beds. There were a lot of exhausted women in my neighbourhood. 3/ #crime #fear
