Greetings from South Australia! Due to a COVID-19 cluster the events this week I was planning to tweet from in-person COVID safe events will instead be covered virtually. Because my mum is a high-risk case, I'm happy to be at home to keep the community safe. #StaySafeStayHome
You can normally follow me at @melaniejward. I tweet to help boost events across STEM in #space, #archaeology & #tech, share events I organise as well as interesting news I come across all while balancing #ADHD, #volunteering, job hunting and uni work.

My mask has @ISUnet's logo. I'm a proud scholarship student from this year's @isu_shssp. The masks are also a thank you gift, as part of #ISUNET's scholarship drive to support others attend so they too can recognise their potential in space. #ASC20

CDC made a presentation on the outlook of the COVID-19 in Zambia. The presentation shows that things will get worse before they can improve.

The GOOD NEWS is that CDC offers feasible options to save lives in Zambia.

Here is a summary

A Thread! Please Read!
True that so far, total confirmed COVID-19 deaths in Africa exceed China, and Zambia may be approaching China levels if control measures are not put in place. Positivity (number of +ve people per given tests) is also rising indicating high transmission
The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases do not tell the whole story. It is likely that for each person found positive after a test, there are more cases in the community. This has been the case in Europe and USA. Relying on confirmed cases therefore doesn't give a full picture

Around this time every year, villagers scramble for the precious #Mopaneworm in Matebeleland South. This year has not been an exception despite the #Lockdown and #COVID19.

@ZimForest @METHI_Zimbabwe @EMAeep @nqo_nn @mitimasango @growa_tree
The #mopaneworm harvested from Mopane trees which is the dominant vegetation type in most parts of Matabeleland South. Gwanda and Plumtree are some of the areas where people harvest madora on a commercial scale
Mopane worm has increasingly become an important dietary supplement for many rural and urban households. It is also an important source of household incomes for those involved in the trade. A bucket of madora can fetch as much as US$25 on the street markets.

The #IMF says the "Great Lockdown" recession will likely be the worst since the Great Depression. Global economy projected to shrink by 3% in 2020. By contrast, in January, the IMF had forecast a global GDP expansion of 3.3% for this year. Details in chart below. Table: @IMFNews

I turned an #entrepreneur 18 years ago. I was fresh from college with not much work experience and very little or no business sense. I struggled as a first generation entrepreneur and have learnt many lessons on the way while paying for those mistakes and learning. #thread
I have experienced many ups and downs in the business and the general economy so far. But nothing can be compared to the current #COVID2019 crisis. The entire world is virtually shut down and definitely the tremors shall be felt in every business.
But there are some lessons from this fiasco. I am trying to put a few and please add more learnings.
1) No business or work can survive a worldwide Pandemic. So you aren’t in the boat alone. Have patience!
2) Always keep a small fund aside irrespective of your turnover or size.

I think this idea of testing for the sake of it is not helpful. If you do shutdown and contact tracing better, then your testing will seemingly be more efficient. With 91% contact tracing claims by @NCDCgov it follows why testing is more targeted and efficient. We can do more tho
One thing that is clear is that if you miss too many people vis tests, it shows up in your emergency room and morgue. Despite the seemingly low testing numbers, and no upsurge in deaths or strain on ICUs, only good contact tracing explains it. Follow the experts.

Around 10am yesterday, I heard a church holding their Sunday Worship service and I knew they had at least 300 members.
So, I said to myself, "Nigerians are stubborn!!"
I took my bath, dressed corporately, wore handgloves, mouth cover, nose mask and carried a file. (1)
I cut a card board and used marker to write 'Government Covid-19 Supervisor' and used a pin to tag it to my dress. As the church security guard saw me coming,he ran inside.I walked into the compound and entered the church. The Pst was preaching, but he paused and looked at me.(2)
All the church members stared at me.I pointed a finger and pretended to be counting the people in the church. Some members started picking up their bags and holding their children's hands.

I brought my phone out and pretended to dial a number. (3)

I know you have a lot of questions about going to work. I am asking businesses to make responsible decisions for their employees and the general public. I didn’t define “essential” businesses in my proclamation, 🧵👇🏼
but any business that cannot maintain appropriate physical distancing between customers, other employees, and the general public should only be functioning if they provide critical services OR can continue to operate with appropriate physical distancing and intentional
safety measures in place. Guidelines on critical services can be found here: cisa.gov/publication/gu…

We want you to voluntarily comply with the Governor’s directive and my Proclamation. It’s not just about whether you think you are going to get sick

#COVID19 arrives in SA

Christian: "no COVID19 formed against me shall prosper"

Same Christian gets infected

Christian: "I am healed by His stripes"

Same Christian succumbs to the virus

Church: "God gives and God takes away"
Do you guys have any idea what's happening behind-the-scenes?

The medical fraternity is bracing itself for the worst

We don't know what to expect but we are trying to prepare

The whole world has been asked to #StaySafeStayHome but NO. Some Christians are special I guess ☹️
Today I call a spade a spade

Some Christians think that they can manipulate God and "make" Him do what they want Him to

I see it every single day of my working life with #HIV

It is sad

It is not too much to ask bazalwane

#StaySafeStayHome

We need to protect each other

Its been drilled into us the importance of #PPE & proper disinfecting to limit disease transmission. Off the job, its proper #HandHygiene, #SocialDistancing & self-monitoring of symptoms. #FlattenTheCurve or the hospitals will be overloaded.
Here is why #COVID19 worries me!
2/
Named for the crown-like spikes on their surface. Coronaviruses are zoonotic, meaning they are transmitted between animals and people. Like MERS and SARS, #COVID19 is an infection of the respiratory system.
3/
First identified in Wuhan, China in Dec 2019. #COVID19 has reached 169 countries, with ~235,000 cases and ~10,000 deaths. And it is spreading quickly. It took over 3 months to reach the first 100,000 cases, and only 12 days to reach the next 100,000.

#coronavirus Update March 20 -- The number of infected in Italy increased by 5986 units (+14% previous day), and the number of deaths by 627 (+18% previuos day). Another dramatic day for #Italy. Growth rates not declining, but flat. ImageImage
1/ Good news is that the growth rate in the number of people admitted to ICU (6%) went down from yesterday, and has been flat in the last few days. Hopefully it declines even further soon #StayAtHome Image
2/ In terms of breakdown by regions, in terms of number of deaths, Piemonte, Liguria, Toscana seem to be following the path of Lombardia. For Puglia is too early to draw conclusions. Figures are both in levels and log scale ImageImage

Hi, I’m Simon. I am an experienced primary school teacher and former headteacher.

Right now though, I’m not in a school as I’ve been working for myself as an education consultant. #edutwitter #StaySafeStayHome #StayAtHomeChallenge #homeschooling @MumsnetTowers @The_School_Run
I’ve been feeling guilty at home for the last few days because I know with my skills I could be:
✔️in front of a class of children
✔️supporting a school community to understand and cope with the situation
✔️in a school coordinating and organising the response
✔️as an experienced safeguarding lead visiting homes of vulnerable children not in school...

Suddenly everyone is at home and having to learn quickly how to handle remote working. Here @data4sdgs we’ve been doing it for years. This is what we’ve learned, and our top tips:
#COVID2019 #covid19 #StaySafeStayHome (1/12)
@Data4SDGs Say good morning every day. We’ve set up a slack channel called ‘good morning’. As we start work, we put down a few sentences on what we’ll be mostly doing that day. It’s been great to build a sense of working together even if we are 1000s of miles apart. (2/12)
Meet weekly. We have a weekly team call, which is much more often than the usual team meeting, but it’s important to hear from everyone at least once a week to keep in touch. Managers also have weekly 1-1s with their direct reports, for the same reason. (3/12)

As far as I can see, the UK is running out of time to avoid reaching a situation like Italy's or Spain's. Some data and analyses below. Apologies for any mistakes and please challenge or correct any claims. Data source: github.com/CSSEGISandData… #Covid19uk [1/11]
UK cases continue to rise at an approx. exponential rate, with a 25-30% daily increase in cases, doubling every ~2.9 days (faster rise of deaths). This is nearly identical (3.0 days) to the Italian growth at the same stage of the epidemic. [2/11]
Like Italy, Spain or France, the UK will need to go into lockdown in a matter of days. But a few days will make all the difference. As shown below, the UK epidemic appears to be only 14-15 days behind Italy (not 3 or 4 weeks, as it has been unfortunately claimed). [3/11]

The new year begins and I usher into a scientific journey where I shall be challenging myself with scientific quest and reviewing a scientific article/blog/interview/technique or facts on a daily basis. (or at least try😉) #365DaysOfScience
Let the journey begin.
The most cited article (over 300,000 times) is the @jbiolchem paper for a technique to estimate protein concentration in a solution. The paper is "Protein measurement with the folin phenol reagent".
#365DaysOfScience
Image: @nature Image
Yes, the classic Lowry's method was published in May 1951. This is a colourimetric assay which gives an estimation of the amount of protein based on a standard curve obtained from a protein of known concentration (usually BSA).
