In 2016, Harry Reid bailed out Hillary Clinton at the Nevada caucus. Reid called casino execs to get shifts off for allied unions & he also called Donald Taylor, the Georgetown-educated head of Unite Here, which oversees Culinary Local 226, to instruct members caucus for Hillary.
This new argument that the union's preferences are shaped solely by how members perceive online supporters of a given candidate doesn't strike me as sincere given the power politics of what happened last time.
Reid's operative who managed the effort was former aide Rebecca Lambe, a longtime advisor to corp lobby firm Cassidy & Associates who also runs Senate Majority PAC. The largest donors to SMP include billionaires & business interests. Bloomberg gave them $20 million in 2018.

Nevada has a history of employee advocacy unlike most other states. In 2010, Reid worked not only w/unions but got casino execs to pressure workers to vote for him to fend off his strong Republican challenger. In 2012, casino exec Steve Wynn overtly coerced workers to vote GOP.
