Today, BF launches a new investigation on the deadly effects of border control in Niger. Over the past year we investigated the relation between bordering practices, spatial shifts in migrant trajectories and increased danger of crossing Niger’s Saharan desert.

A thread 🧵
In 2015, with the support of the European states and agencies, #Niger adopted a new Law on illegal trafficking of migrants. Law 2015-36 establishes new forms of #border control with the aim of thwarting #migration across Northern Niger to Libya. Image
Law 2015-36 has not stopped migrants' #mobility in the region but rather forced trajectories into more remote areas of the #desert, creating dangerous and often fatal conditions. Image

First cloud-free #Sentinel2 satellite images in a month dropped yesterday. Great to check out snow levels, reservoirs, and wet wet wet in the Butte Basin/Lower Sacramento River. First image compares Colusa area now vs 12/15/2022. #Geography #RemoteSensing #CaWx #CaStorm 1/x
Imagery paints a picture of soil types. Along the River, coarser soils settle quickly once floodwaters slow down. Blue areas have more clay, because super-fine soil particles can stay suspended longer, travel farther in slow-moving floodwaters. Orchards prefer coarse soils. 2/x
Plumes of sediment from the Pajaro and Salinas Rivers are still very visible in the Monterey Bay on 1/19/2023. Two visualizations of sediment in the lower Delta and San Pablo Bay. 3/x

Tutorial Thread🧵 on how to create Climate maps using R Language specifically ClimateR🌧️🌤️ package created by Mike Johnson...In this tutorial I'm going to use The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia 🇸🇦#gischat #cartography #GIS #geospatial #Remotesensing #dataviz #R #rspatial #mapping
So At first Climate R is package created specifically to deal with climate illustration ......So in order to get it working you have to Have Remote package already and you have to Install Using the codes below. Codes for installing Climate R
So after that were going prepare the Tempreture illustration in which they are three ways of illustrating Mean Tempreture(One map),Annual Tempreture(Mutiple Maps) and Monthly Tempreture.

The second field season of #TrophiChange was completed a few weeks ago. Here's a thread of what I was doing.
#ornithology #SciComm #waders #shorebirds #fieldwork
I am interested in linking #whimbrel chick growth to their food resources. To do that, I started in May by finding as many nests as possible. More nests = more chicks. This season that meant 110 nests.
#ornithology #TrophiChange #waders #shorebirds #fieldwork
But nests of several other species were found and surveyed too, to record laying dates and hatching success, as part of our centre's long term monitoring of breeding #waders in #Iceland.
Here's a golden plover nest, that successfully hatched. #TrophiChange #fieldwork

I am very excited to announce that @MohsenAlif & I have won the Google Research Award!
Our project entitled "Is Economics From Afar Domain Generalizable?" falls under the Machine Perception category.
We are the only winners from Pakistan!… Google Research Scholar Award (2021) winners from Pakistan
It's a good day for #Pakistan and a fantastic one for us.
Both @MohsenAlif & I are at @ITUPunjab which is where we got the chance to do this multidisciplinary & cutting edge work. It's not everyday when labs in computer vision & #Economics come together to create impact.
According to Google, The Research Scholar Program supports early-career faculty who are doing impactful research in fields relevant to Google and is intended to help to develop new collaborations and encourage long term relationships.

Our paper on flood detection in SAR/optical time series is now available in the proceedings of the ISPRS 2020 Congress: ……

This work led by our postdoc Clément Rambour shows that SAR can significantly improve flood detection using #remotesensing data. Image
We will release soon a Sentinel-1/2 dataset of flood events time series with temporal ground truth, based on the work of @BenjaminBischke on his MediaEval dataset.

This is a joint work between @cedric_lab and @onera_fr (@blesa_ux, @EliseColin3).
And the dataset is out ! Freely available on Dataport :…

Check it out if you're into flood detection and/or multimodal remote sensing. 🛰️🌧️

📢 NEW PAPER! #PaperThread #SciComm

Master’s student @samherniman recently published an article about avian habitat suitability in Remote Sensing Applications: Society and Environment. Sam has written this thread summarizing his findings...

In general, when a habitat has more #birds, it also has more of all living things. In scientific terms, we say that birds are good surrogates or indicators of #biodiversity.

This is excellent, because counting birds is really easy. Many of them sing or call. So, we can do a field survey of birds in a habitat and use that number to find a relative count of all biodiversity.

more birdsong ≈ more birds ≈ more biodiversity

Just to show what we are doing with the footage - we're starting by investigating each individual scene and mapping them out. We're looking for evidence of who is responsible for this. The scenes here are geolocated to here:… in Mautu, #Cameroon. ImageImageImage
