I am very excited to announce that @MohsenAlif & I have won the Google Research Award!
Our project entitled "Is Economics From Afar Domain Generalizable?" falls under the Machine Perception category.
We are the only winners from Pakistan!… Google Research Scholar Award (2021) winners from Pakistan
It's a good day for #Pakistan and a fantastic one for us.
Both @MohsenAlif & I are at @ITUPunjab which is where we got the chance to do this multidisciplinary & cutting edge work. It's not everyday when labs in computer vision & #Economics come together to create impact.
According to Google, The Research Scholar Program supports early-career faculty who are doing impactful research in fields relevant to Google and is intended to help to develop new collaborations and encourage long term relationships.

It’s been a while since our last post, and we sure have been busy. Both the #Discovery and #GoodFortune teams have been on the water many days scanning (i.e., #remotesensing), SeaSearching, diving, and identifying the trail of #artifacts leading away from the #RingSite in #Area2
$SFRX is also actively working with the State #DivisionofHistoricalResources (DHR) to confirm that our previously disclosed #RingSite is, in fact, a Shipwreck Site so that we can continue our work there in earnest.
Check out the pictures of the three deadeye rings lying next to each other on the #RingSite. Dozens of #artifacts are on the surface and buried in that area, according to our disclosure to DHR. It’s very exciting!

Our paper on flood detection in SAR/optical time series is now available in the proceedings of the ISPRS 2020 Congress: ……

This work led by our postdoc Clément Rambour shows that SAR can significantly improve flood detection using #remotesensing data. Image
We will release soon a Sentinel-1/2 dataset of flood events time series with temporal ground truth, based on the work of @BenjaminBischke on his MediaEval dataset.

This is a joint work between @cedric_lab and @onera_fr (@blesa_ux, @EliseColin3).
And the dataset is out ! Freely available on Dataport :…

Check it out if you're into flood detection and/or multimodal remote sensing. 🛰️🌧️

📢 NEW PAPER! #PaperThread #SciComm

Master’s student @samherniman recently published an article about avian habitat suitability in Remote Sensing Applications: Society and Environment. Sam has written this thread summarizing his findings...

In general, when a habitat has more #birds, it also has more of all living things. In scientific terms, we say that birds are good surrogates or indicators of #biodiversity.

This is excellent, because counting birds is really easy. Many of them sing or call. So, we can do a field survey of birds in a habitat and use that number to find a relative count of all biodiversity.

more birdsong ≈ more birds ≈ more biodiversity

Dilemma: I can't stop myself from having mixes feelings about posts like these. On the one hand, great to advocate the power of #RemoteSensing and open datasets like @CopernicusEU. On the other hand, people expect this kind of quality for the South of Ghana as well. 1/
Most remotesensing marketing stuff is about:
* Moving gletsjers
* Wildfires
* Agriculture in the Noordoostpolder
* Crazy stuff in desert environments (no clouds)

So, great, but let's also show where the challenges are. And how we can help each other overcome those. 2/
Note to self: don't persist in being a bitter asshole, come up with some upsides and positive examples.

Self: well noted, working on it. /3

(Not really sure how these Twitter threads work ...)
