4 Principles of Collective #Computation:

1 Ground truth (objective reality)
2 Effective ground truth (what we agree on, whether or not it is accurate)
3 #Information can be collectively encoded in #networks
4 Outputs are a product of collective dynamics

@C4COMPUTATION right now
"I think #economics really needs to adopt a generative framework with agent-based models of cognitively plausible software people...[and] we don't choose to fear."

Court win blocking #Colorado #coal mine expansion a victory for #climate, #publiclands. @WildEarthGuard's @JeremyJNichols1:

"it’s a resounding rebuke of the Trump administration’s attempts to sidestep our environmental laws to appease the coal industry,"…
It comes on heels of longstanding efforts to defend #NationalForest lands, #climate from Arch Coal's attempts to expand West Elk mine.

Not only does mine's #coal fuel #climatecrisis, mine vents massive amounts of #methane, as we explain in this video.

Read on for full saga!
We first filed suit in 2008 challenging #methane venting at West Elk mine. We were represented by @TedZukoski, a long-time defender of #publiclands and #climate.

Mine is largest single industrial source of methane emissions in #Colorado,…

#OnThisDay 30 years ago, Margaret Thatcher became the first leader of any major nation to call for a #UnitedNations treaty on #climate change
You can watch the speech here or read it here - it remains IMHO one of the best speeches ever given on the subject, especially given the year and the context
Unusually for any leader's #UNGA speech, she devoted the entire thing to a single issue - '...the threat to our global environment'

Raiding journalists. Intimidating whistleblowers. Now outlawing boycotts? The Australian govt is showing a worrying trend towards silencing critics – particularly on environment and climate. (Thread 👇)… #auspol #yourrighttoknow #climate
Worth asking who stands to gain from making boycotts illegal? Last attempt to outlaw secondary boycotts came from the logging industry under the Abbott government. This time it’s the coal industry wanting to stop climate boycotts.… #auspol #yourrighttoknow
The federal Coalition also tried to cut off funding to environment charities. They wanted to force us to spend donations on 'remediation' (weeding & planting trees) instead of pointing out their policy failures.… #auspol #yourrighttoknow #climate

Thread: This article from amazing @sundaybusiness has bothered me all day. It's a very "glass more than half full" portrayal of the climate crisis that's unbecoming of a country's leader when so many are already suffering from #climatechange IMHO. So, I'm exploring the issue...1
@sundaybusiness Here's the quote: "Varadkar said it was “interesting to see that there can be pluses and minuses...One thing that we definitely face as a result of climate change is warmer winters. We’re already experiencing warmer winters, and that actually means using less energy because... 2
@sundaybusiness "’s warmer and people need less heating, and it also means fewer deaths as a result of cold weather” While there are more downsides than benefits, the upsides are there, he added..It’s interesting that when you do look at those things, that there is a ledger, and there are 2

In 2008, #Massachusetts stepped into a global #climate leadership position w/passage of the landmark Global Warming Solutions Act. This year, it has the opportunity to renew that leadership and rejoin the climate vanguard by passing H.3983, the "2050 Roadmap Act." A thread... 1/
Today I delivered a letter to @RepMichlewitz @SpeakerDeLeo & Sen Prez @karenspilka from 37 academic scholars & experts on #energy & #climatechange calling attention to the 2050 Roadmap Bill, which would put #Massachusetts on a path to net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. 2/
The #Massachussetts 2050 Roadmap Bill, sponsored by @JoanMeschino (👏) + supported by 59 legislators, provides a timely update to the regulatory framework established by the Global Warming Solutions Act and a critical opportunity to renew the commonwealth’s climate leadership. 3/

By ignoring socio-economic realities facing the people that the tech is supposed to benefit, GM Golden Rice could make things much, much worse for them.

Good lessons for #climate movement on the need to assess hi-tech “solutions" from all angles.
There are real reasons why smallholder farmers, environmentalists & ppl who understand ag & nutrition reject GMOs & Golden Rice. I'll list a few here.

The scientists writing that @guardian article repeatedly, knowingly, willfully & shamefully ignore these.

@guardian @guardianeco a) To recoup the hundreds of millions of dollars it costs to develop a GM seed variety (Golden Rice included), companies need to dominate local markets & eliminate local seed diversity. Result: catastrophic loss of agricultural biodiversity, as seen in US, Canada, Argentina. /3

We just launched @IEA's Renewables 2019 report, with fascinating insights on how installations of solar PV systems on homes, commercial buildings & industrial facilities will soar by 2024, changing how electricity is generated & consumed.

@IEA Renewables are set to expand by 50% through 2024, with distributed PV alone growing as much as onshore wind. This forecast is 14% higher than last year's due to improved policies & increasing competitiveness.

@IEA Distributed solar PV expansion is set to more than double over the next 5 years.

• China's total distributed PV capacity becomes the world's largest
• Growth in the EU resumes
• India and others emerge as new markets, driven by improved economics & policies

@AlexChalkChelt @MollyMEP @mpmwilko @MartinChelt and George Penny are seated at St Andrews. Interesting discussion looks to follow 👀 #QTCheltenham #climate #yourview
The event is now in motion - our distinguished Chair, Professor Janet Dwyer, has invited the panel to say a few words about the purpose of the event @AlexChalkChelt believes the challenge is real but ‘very much achievable’
DISAGREEMENT: @MollyMEP has already thwarted @AlexChalkChelt view that technology plays an important role in fighting climate change. “It’s system change not climate change” is her response

Agriculture is the most destructive human activity invented. Major cause of biodiversity loss, water and ocean pollution, climate pollution. @LennartLUCSUS says the root cause is using annual plants instead of perennials - a 10,000 year old mistake. Thread on his talk 👇🏽
@LennartLUCSUS Annual crops (cereals, oilseeds, legumes) are 80% of food. This means overturning soil and destroying its structure & life at least 1-2x/year. @LennartLUCSUS
@LennartLUCSUS .@LennartLUCSUS quotes Wes Jackson on natural system agriculture. The key is diversity in space (polyculture) + perennial crops living for many years w/ large/deep roots. Jackson's vision for perennial ag he thought would take 100 years, closer to reality in 50.

Thread: #XR isnt about climate

Stuart Basden Co-founder Extinction Rebellion says XR not about Climate (that's just a symptom of a toxic system that has infected the ways we relate to each other as humans and to all life)"

XR is about #decolonialism…
XR about #decolonialism: Basden says "how European ‘civilisation’ spread around the globe thru cruelty & violence over the last 600 years of colonialism, where the roots of the infections go much further back"
Basden #XR: "#Europeans spread their toxicity around the world, they brought torture, genocide, carnage & suffering to the ends of the earth. Their cultural myths justified the horrors, idea that indigenous people were animals (not humans)"

I have a lot to say, announce or rant on here right now.
Back on Reddit there was a shakedown in the pwned sub's adminship that saw first an incompetent one then eventually a quite draconian one coming to power in whom the latter had subverted this place with many metaphorical book burnings, looking from before up till now.
Speaking about the first incompetent one he talked about turning the whole subreddit into a gaming place, which angered a lot of users.…

With brand new epilogue: Dear Greta.

#climate #climatechange
#ClimateChange thread

The most sober & pragmatic analysis I've seen is from Citi, showing the benefits of clean solutions outweigh costs.

But that's the business side.

Sadly, the political rhetoric is now unhinged, exaggerated, irresponsible hysteria.…
1) Greta says "people are dying". Not exactly. Deaths from natural disasters have plummeted over past 100 years.

2) Greta says capitalism is the problem when its driven down pollution by subbing gas for oil/coal, driven innovation lowering solar, wind, battery & other alt costs.

The German government unveiled a major policy package to combat #climate change. The subsequent discussion in the German media shows the huge political and economic cost of a simple-minded focus on #carbon pricing – it’s the 1980s all over again! A Thread @BMF_Bund @JWMason1
The policy package contains a mix of mainly sensible measures: A slowly increasing carbon price, public investment (public trains), subsidies for switching to green technology, transfers to compensate “losers”, and a plan to move out of coal energy.
What happened in the subsequent media discussion is very interesting. As expected, there was critique of certain transfers and subsidies that some groups did not like (“waste of money”). Also, the opposition parties were critical – no surprise here.

Twitter Family, I had a wonderful, peaceful trip with Black American women to Ghana, followed by a productive, solo artist retreat, only to return to the USA and see two Black women in my city of #Pittsburgh being brutally beaten by FOUR MEN @ExxonMobil!…
We are still gathering the facts; but based on what has been reported so far, one woman pumped $17 worth of gas⛽️ but noticed the pump was leaking. She went inside the @exxonmobil (at 2501 Brighton Street, 15212), to report it and was rudely dismissed by employees. #Pittsburgh
An employee claimed the woman had not paid. The situation at the @exxonmobil turned violent and at least four men of apparently foreign origin, are viciously beating two Black American women in the head, slamming and hitting them on the ground, etc. Completely unacceptable!
