Of the increasing number of initiatives setting out in recent years to challenge heteronormativity in education, the 2006-2009 No Outsiders project has arguably been one of the #MostInfluential
Conducted across 15 primary schools in England, #No Outsiders
Conducted across 15 primary schools in England, No Outsiders was an action research project that sought to disrupt heteronormativity through critical pedagogy, gaining widespread academic and media attention in the process
In spite of its prominence, though, there has been a lack of research exploring the ways in which #children have incorporated this work into their everyday understandings and doings of #gender and #sexuality.

1⃣ Allow British nationality rights for descendants of Chagos Islanders denied #citizenship due to historic injustice (237:154)
2⃣Omit #Clause9 which would have given the Home Secretary sweeping powers to deprive people of British citizenship without giving them notice (209:173)
3⃣Ensure Part 2 of the Bill does not authorise policies & decisions that fail to comply with the #RefugeeConvention (218:140)

Today is the first #newmoon after the summer #solstice meaning it's 1 Hekatombaion - Athenian New Year! The Athenians had a number of calendars in use; Hekatombaion was the first month of the lunisolar 'festival calendar'.
New holders of civic offices would be sworn in, swearing oaths, with the gods as their witness, to fulfil their duties in a manner befitting the office. Athenian #democracy relied on its citizens' (free Athenian men) direct participation in the councils, assemblies and courts.
The latest batch of #ephebes - 18-year-old sons of citizens - were called up. They'd swear an oath to defend Athens and never shame the city. Two years of training would start turning boys into well-disciplined #hoplites; they gained a cloak, a spear, a shield and #citizenship.

#SupremeCourt to hear a plea by the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), seeking a stay on the May 28 order of @HMOIndia which empowered 13 districts across three States to grant citizenship to non-Muslim minorities from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh
In an affidavit filed in response to a place by Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), the MHA stated that May 28 notification has no relation whatsoever with the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) but is a "mere delegation of power vested with the Central Government."
MHA has further pointed out that similar delegation of power had been permitted by Central Government in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2016 and 2018.

It’s election time in NL!

-> 17 March 🇳🇱

I had a look at party positions on #citizenship in 13 election manifestoes.

What did I find…?

1. Right-wing restriction
2. Left-wing silence / ambiguity
3. Small liberal center
4. New diaspora capture

A thread /
#1. Right-wing restriction

No surprise. Parties on center-right (VVD), orthodox Christian right (SGP) & populist right (FvD, PVV) advocate citizenship stripping.

‘Freedom’ Party PVV advocates restrictions of #dualcitizens (eg military)

FvD & SGP against pathway to citizenship.
#2. Left-wing silence / ambiguity I

The Greens (GL) & orthodox Socialist Party (SP) are silent on citizenship.

Labour Party (PvdA) somewhat ambiguous on #dualcitizenship: ‘no sign of lack of loyalty, but want to help people get rid of other citizenship, if they want’.

New pre-print:

What’s the causal impact of #dualcitizenship acceptance on immigrant naturalisation?

Floris Peters (@MiLifeStatus) and I apply quasi-experimental design based on reforms in 🇳🇱 (1997) and 🇸🇪 (2001).

I think it’s pretty nifty 🤓

thread/1 Image

Difference-in-differences design exploits exogenous variation in origin country #citizenship legislation to identify the treatment effect of destination country policy reform.

We draw on @macimide data on expatriate dual citizenship acceptance:… Image
We employ microlevel administrative data on complete migrant populations in the years around these reforms.

In 🇳🇱 dual citizenship was restricted in 1997, though with major exemptions (eg not if 🇳🇱 partner).

In 🇸🇪 dual citizenship was liberalised in 2001. Image

This is a great photograph.
Basically the lobbying from these #Basotho chiefs kept #Lesotho, #eSwatini, and #Botswana out of the Union of South Africa and allowed for their contemporary #independence. (Names of chiefs in next tweets from Morija below the pic)
It should also be noted that the fact that these three territories were NOT incorporated in 1909 made it *much* harder for the apartheid regime to implement full apartheid via its Homelands/Bantustan plans. These plans *always* had Botswana/Swai/Lesotho playing a key role...
...with South Africa assuming that leaders in the three countries would simply accept their role as minor ethnic states in South Africa's orbit. With the support of the international community, all three resisted this (to differing degrees, of course).

New @FrontSociology paper w Swantje Falcke (@MiLifeStatus) with, I think, intriguing #nullfindings.

Q: did abolishment of “domestic clause” (i.e. #dualcitizenship restriction) in Germany 🇩🇪 affect naturalization rates after 2000?

We find it did not.

The “Inlandsklausel” before 2000 exempted German citizens who acquired another citizenship from losing 🇩🇪 citizenship if they lived in 🇩🇪.

This ‘backdoor to dual citizenship’ enabled naturalising migrants to renounce, and then reacquire, their origin citizenship. Image

Data: we combine data from SOEP (@DIW_Berlin_en) with @_GlobalCIT data on #citizenship reacquisition policies in origin countries.

Method: we employ a difference-in-differences strategy and compare naturalization rates between 1993 and 2006. Image

Our new polling and analysis of public attitudes to citizenship in the United Kingdom. 🇬🇧

The full report is available online:…

👇 Our recommendations and main findings:

#COVID19 #Brexit #citizenship
🇬🇧 Recommendation one: The Government should shorten the settlement requirements for all non-citizen #COVID19 key workers to two rather than five years, significantly reduce their residency fee by at least 75% and waive their citizenship application fee.

#Brexit #citizenship
🇬🇧 Recommendation two: The Government should introduce discounted citizenship fees of at least 50% for all low-income migrants.

Heard on @cafedotcom Insider with @PreetBharara and @AnneMilgram that the voter turnout in this election is expected to be the highest since 1908. Here's who couldn't vote in 1908. THREAD 1/14
Women. 19th amendment passed in 1920 granting equal access to the polls for #womenvoters. 2/14
Native Americans. The Indian Citizenship Act passed in 1924 granting #citizenship for all Native Americans (that's some audacity that the original inhabitants of this land were not citizens🤨). Some western states still didn't fully allow Native Americans voting until 1948. 3/14

Some important, but valid questions arise as I reflect upon the protests that happened in opposition to #CAA all over the country. Collating my thoughts as a thread and sharing it. The questions are open for anyone to answer. (1/N)
@sakthi_ind93 @Swamy39 @MaridhasAnswers
The #CAA guarantees to instantly provide Citizenship to all persecuted minorities from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh, who entered India before 31st Dec, 2014. There are 30K+ such immediate beneficiaries who will now be granted Indian Citizenship. (2/N)
Now, questions are raised by few senior MPs and politicians about why Muslims have been excluded. Obvious reasons include:

1. Out of the 30k people who are awaiting Indian #citizenship for many years, there are Hindus, Sikhs, Parsi, Jain, Buddhist and Christians. (3/N)

Can't believe I hadn't come across this profound work by @simonjduffy before

"#Citizenship reminds us that we can each live a good life, in our own way, while also living together with mutual respect."

Intro on link, more highlights in THREAD below…
Three implications of being a Citizen:

❤️Being EQUAL in fundamental worth and dignity

❤️Being DIFFERENT: we "have many different gifts which [we] bring together to build a better world"

And then the 7 keys to Citizenship...

Being a Citizen means being in control of your own life - able to make decisions, mistakes, make your own way...

***EVERYONE can be in control***

OK. Here we go. #ICJ Provisional Measures Order #TheGambia v #Myanmar #Rohingya #Genocideconvention Judge Sebutinde - not on the bench.
- Background of application - omitting procedural history etc.
Reference to #Rohingya group that self-identifies as Rohingya; prima facie jurisdiction need not be definitive as to merits of the case - art 36(1) ICJ Statute & Art 9 Genocide Convention - this needs to be satisfied first
Parties to GC - no reservation to art 9 by Myanmar but to art 6 & 8; no reservations of Gambia; “dispute” exists where hold “clearly opposite views” re performance/non-performance of obligations;one party maintains dispute, other denies it. Therefore compromissory clause comes in

What's looming for the legal #immigration system in 2020? Here's a forecast from the @chooseboundless team. (Spoiler alert: Nothing good...)…
@chooseboundless Let me revise that — some good (and potentially good) #immigration news is on the horizon for 2020.

For example, thousands of #immigrants from #Liberia suddenly find themselves able to apply for green cards this year (and ultimately #citizenship).…
@chooseboundless And the dream of green cards for some 800,000 (mostly) Indian immigrants is still alive — if in 2020 Congress can broker a compromise that Trump will sign into law.
