Hey, #FioNA, do you know the history of your colleague Anne (Resusci) as known as the "most kissed" face of all time?
In 1880, an unidentified young woman was found drowned in the river Seine, Paris. Due to her beauty, a pathologist at the morgue decided to make a death mask 👀 Image
In the following years, numerous copies were produced and, unthinkable nowadays, became a fashionable fixture among part of the society. Her enigmatic smile was compared to that of the Mona Lisa.

About #CPR, in 1732, mouth-to-mouth resuscitation was described first by William Tossach in Alloa, Scotland. Tossach resuscitated a suffocated coal-pit miner. "A man dead in appearance, recovered by distending the lungs with air". Image

THREAD: 5yrs ago we began the TRUST study. Excited to see it finally published in @BMJ_Qual_Saf . This kicked off my interest in using simulation to support patient safety and simulation-informed clinical design.

Here’s some thoughts & reflections

qualitysafety.bmj.com/content/early/…
2/ Study goal = identify/quantify latent safety threats during trauma ISS & analyze using framework analysis

We published other data including tracking movement within the clinical space stel.bmj.com/content/5/2/78

& debriefing content during systems sim.
stel.bmj.com/content/early/…
3/ This study was only possible with substantial support from @UnityHealthTO , our dept & @Sim_StMikes

My mentor, @HumanFact0rz taught me the importance of pitching an idea to the right people. When we started simulation for systems eval & patient safety was uncommon

What is the simulation of Grimes?

“C insists Grimes is an experiment. “For me, it’s almost like a sociological exercise in the nature of celebrity. I just watch what happens to the Grimes character. It’s pretty important for my own mental health. I definitely have to abstract myself from my persona.”
“It takes a lot of effort to, like, build something, to work on something for a decade and then be like OK, the winds will take it where it will.”

Note: In interview it also mentioned the “associated act Elon Musk” regarding fiction vs reality. Is it all an act?

I've read with interest the proposal by @SickKidsNews to conduct simulations about the #covid19 back to school experience. I think this is an excellent concept which wrote about about a while ago.

Here's the link to the study
safeschoolcovid19.ca
Many people have noted concerns about the validity of the study given it will be conducted in private schools (appropriate criticism) though probably worth knowing whether they tried to study in public schools and whether any road blocks.
I'm curious to hear more from the study investigators about what looks like the primary outcome of the study... which seems to be related to glow in the dark liquid transmission through out the class. This appears to overemphasize surface transmission rather than person to person

Thread= #simulation for latent safety threat identification

Summary: Debriefing safety threats, people talk more about people (e.g. interpersonal issues) than env't or equipment threats

stel.bmj.com/content/early/…
1/ Image
There's a growing application of simulation to identify latent safety threats e.g. equipment, interpersonal & physical space issues especially during #covid19

Typically data is gathered via debriefing (i.e. feedback from participants after simulation)

2/ Image
We observed that even when explicitly asked about challenges posed by the physical space & equipment, the discussions veered back towards teamwork/communication. Even our follow up questions gravitated away from the physical space/equipment issues

Language is a good tool but a bad master t can serve you, but it can also enslave you. Misuse of language is a form of mind-control. In his novel, Nineteen Eighty-Four, George Orwell laid out in detail how language can be misused to deceive and control the masses. In our world
political correctness and euphemism are pervasive. Orwellian doublespeak and thought-control are ubiquitous among the politicians and the powerful propaganda machinery of the American Empire. Eugenics and population control are now called "reproductive health" and "family
planning." The department of war is called the department of defense. Torture is now called "enhanced interrogation techniques." The war effort is now called the peace effort. Invading foreign nations and bombing their populations is now called "liberation and spreading democracy

Over the centuries, we've learned how to use #science to *make* things. That's called #engineering. But we have yet to perfect the practice of using science to help us to *do* things. And it is this gap that's preventing solutions to #covid19 ...
...We don't even have a widely-accepted name for this new thing. I've been calling it #decisionintelligence (and @Gartner_inc and other influencers are using this term too)...
We can see this gap in the wide discrepancy between 1,000s of research projects for #covid19, and yet even months into the #pandemic, there are people on the front lines - universities, event centers, aged care facilities - who are struggling...

Project 3: Ginty's Goggles

In collaboration with the tissue viability team @NNUH, this 360-degree video based #simulation experience gave users the opportunity to gain a one-to-one tutorial with an experienced educator #VR #tech

More information below...
2. This project aimed at improving accessibility to high quality #meded, using an innovative but immersive approach. It was simple, but impactful, and is fully scalable to provide trust wide (or even further reaching) training on an important topic - the skin assessment
3. For editing, to improve educational value, I used simple titles and pictures overlaid onto the 360 spherical video using adobe premiere pro. For interactivity, we used pause points to get users to complete relevant documentation on the assessment they had just witnessed.

I’ve been tagged in a lot of “pledge” tweets regarding antiracism. I haven’t responded to any of them. Here’s why. 🧵

I don’t really understand what you mean by “pledge”. What is it you’re “pledging” to do? More importantly, what have you actually *done*?

I’m not black 1/
But I have thought a lot about racism, particularly in the context of the oppressive structures of medicine and medical culture. I’ve written about it, spoken about it and suggested concrete ways we can move forward:

blogs.bmj.com/bmj/2020/03/05…

But I repeat, I’m not black 2/
I do not come from a community that has been violently and continually oppressed for centuries. I do not come from a community that has tried over and over again to have their voices heard, only to be forced to shout louder and louder, and even then to be drowned out 3/

Today I want to largely speak to my #simulation & health care educator colleagues. And that is to say:

We have a problem with racism & diversity. Our simulation & health curriculum perpetuates systemic racism.

🧵 In this thread I link research and resources

How? 👇 1/
We continue to use stereotypes as case examples in classroom and simulation settings. In Karani et al (2017) words “perpetuates fallacious stereotypes and racial biases among the next generation of physicians”. bit.ly/370arLW 2/
We use white-skinned manikins &simulated/standardised patients as a default, which misses opportunity to address racism& implicit bias in the training years. This falsely creates the perception that only white-skinned people receive care, &anything outside of this is “extra”. 3/

Thread: I recently ran a session for Auckland ACME course on #simulation implementation for continuing professional development. I invite ideas from amazing folks who also do this regularly (@georgemastoras @SocraticEM @precordialthump @INFOdebriefing) but here are mine 1/
My 7 tips that I have found useful for implementing #simulation for CPD at @UnityHealthTO
1.Be honest and genuine – This is SO important yet also not a simple hack. This will need to be context specific.

2/
2.Circulate case stem in advance – creating an honest & trustworthy learning env't for te participants. Ppl worry about surprises. Eliminate them. I send out case stem +/- entire case document if requested (anonymous of course). Idea borrowed from @INFOdebriefing

General tips from my experience in obtaining biomedical sciences research #fellowships/funding as a computational/mathematical scientist, and having gone through hundreds of applications as committee member @wellcometrust, @TheBHF, @NC3Rs, @The_MRC, #STEM, #WomenInSTEM:
1. Success generally comes after failure. Every time I've been awarded a fellowship, I had a painful rejection first. Analyse the rejection and act to overcome it. You will need advice and clear thinking (and some time to recover).
2. Ask yourself why you really want a fellowship and remember this reason through the ups and downs of the process. Fellowships are a very good way to combine a scientific career and a young family, for example.
