Efficiency vs. Effectiveness - They are Not the Same

Over the past 3+ years there has been a sharp rise in interest related to indoor air cleaners. I have consistently seen confusion over the terms efficiency and effectiveness. This thread is about the difference. 1/
When thinking about air cleaners, make sure not to conflate efficiency and effectiveness.
An air cleaner that is intended to remove aerosol particles from indoor air can be close to 100% efficient at removing particles as they flow through the device. 2/
That sounds great, right? Maybe. Maybe not. In fact, a device that is 100% efficient (captures all particles that move though it) may be highly ineffective. What? How can this be? 3/

Are you looking for a tool to help estimate the risk of contagion transmission in indoor spaces? Well, look no further!

This open-source #IAQ tool considers variables of space to calculate the risk and number of purifiers needed. thememeticist.github.io/VaporWarehouse/
With #VaporWarehouse you can even use the particle simulation feature to visualize the number of infectious particles in the air!
With the tool, you have two options to get an estimate for the best air purifier unit for your space. Firstly, you can choose from a list of air purifiers that we have provided. Alternatively, you can input your own values and preferences to get a personalized estimate.

CO2.click monitor firmware update adds 66x more storage space

One thing I love about co2.click (by @IndianaTux) is the upgradeable firmware so I keep getting new features and improvements added to the device I bought more than a year ago. 🧵1/ #IAQ Image of co2.click Model C ...
The latest v1.12.0 firmware update for the Model C allows the user to store 66x more data when it is offline allowing you to record data for the following lengths of time before storage is full depending on how frequently you are saving measurements: 2/
For various sampling rates you can be offline for:
66 hours = 1 sample/min
133 hours = 1 sample/2 min
333 hours = 1 sample/5 min
666 hours = 1 sample/10 min
1000 hours = 1 sample/15 min

US federal agency considering a ban on gas stoves

"US Consumer Product Safety commissioner said gas stove usage is a “hidden hazard.” Any option is on the table. Products that can’t be made safe can be banned"

Would be great win for #IAQ #EndFossilFuels

cnn.com/2023/01/09/bus…
We have to get rid of gas turbines and home furnaces as fast as possible too (for climate reasons especially). But those ony pollute outdoor air, so we breathe 1000 times less of those exhausts vs. cooking stoves. Stoves are terrible for indoor pollution.

Electric induction cooks as well as gas and is much more energy efficient. And even if everyone switched, it is small in overall electricity consumption

NO reason to not get rid of cooking stoves already. Other than the pervasive influence of FF industry

Welcome to our 🧵on clean indoor air! Each Monday we’ll post threads about indoor air quality (IAQ) and its significance to health. We’ll cover the composition of air, how to measure harmful elements, and how to improve unhealthy indoor air. 1/6

#IAQ #IndoorAir #AirQuality Demistifying Clean Indoor Air, Introduction, The Air We Brea
We can’t see or touch the air around us. However, it’s key to the planet and to life. It surrounds the earth and provides a protective, insulating cushion. It contains gasses vital to life: oxygen, carbon dioxide, water vapor and nitrogen. 2/6 (image:earth) https://climate.nasa.gov/news/2491/10-interest
Did you know our atmosphere is composed of 78% nitrogen and only 21% oxygen? These gasses support plants, animals and the nitrogen cycle, which keeps all life on earth in balance. 3/6 The Atmoshere's Composition, https://earthhow.com/earth-atmo

I’ve been seeing a push to get MCPS teachers KN95 masks.
Obviously, getting vaccinated is hugely important.
Ventilation in schools is important.
…and masks are certainly part of the mix keeping the air clear, because after all, #COVIDisairborne

🧵 I made another #corsirosenthalbox air cleaner today for my wife's HS classroom. Our city is on fire with infections today, so I wanted to take the opportunity to show others how EASY it is to assemble something that can 🛑 COVID transmission in a classroom or home. 1/n
All of the supplies can be found at Lowe's for $85. I upgraded the filters to MERV 14 (3M Filtrete 2500), so that added another $25. Four filters, a 20” box fan, roll of duct tape, and a sharp utility knife is all that's required. Here I have cut the top & bottom off the box. 2/n
Next start standing up your filters, use a small piece of tape to hold them together while you get it figured out. Each side will be 21” long. Make a cube. The filters are directional, & have an arrow on the sides to indicate airflow. 🚩Make certain all ➡️ point in to center. 3/n

The Concord project opted to go with Solar (PV) connected to an energy storage system (battery storage) in lieu of a backup generator.

This system has been designed to keep the critical loads for the home operational even if the utility power is knocked out.
This includes the backup heating and domestic hot water system (gas boiler with radiant floor heat + indirect hot water tank), the refrigerator, freezer, microwave, TV/WiFi, lighting and receptacles in strategic areas.
The Generac PwrCell provides 18 kWh of battery storage in a single cabinet, and up to 9 kW of continuous power output, enough to power the critical loads for extended periods of time. It can also be expanded to 36 kWh of battery storage in the future should it ever be needed.
