#Israel #Jerusalem #Russia #Syria

#Russia's #ambassador to #Syria released this week what some saw as a veiled threat to #Israel if Israel continued to #bomb #Iranian positions in the war-torn country.

On February 6th, 20 #Syrian and #Iranian military officials were #killed in an airstrike on a target near #Damascus. The attack also resulted in #Syrian air defense systems accidentally firing on a #Russian 172-passenger plane.

The plane was able to land safely at a nearby airport. However, #Russian #ambassador Alexander Yefimov was not interested in the Israeli justifications. In an interview with Sputnik arabic, Yefimov described the #Israeli #attacks as “#provocative and very #dangerous”.

He further #warned that "this increases the possibility of a conflict over #Syria." As #Syria is already in #Conflict its #warning was understood that the ongoing #Israeli attacks could eventually lead to an #armed #clash between the #Jewish state and the #Russian armed forces

in the region. However, given the warm relations between #Jerusalem and #Moscow in recent years, many have had difficulty believing the traditional interpretation that this large non-#Jewish army would include #Russia.

But Ambassador Yefimov is not wrong in saying that there could be an #intentional or #unintentional #incident that could suddenly turn #friends into #enemies. #Israel is aware of this #risk,

but appears to consider the threat of #Iranian #aggression greater than the possibility of accidentally triggering an #apocalyptic #showdown with #Russia.
