1/5 Last week, I taught about Anquetil-Duperron, William Jones, the discovery of #language similarity and the beginnings of IE Studies. Disciplines such as #Iranian Studies or #Indology, as we know them today, would not have been possible without those efforts and contributions.
2/5 But I also made it a point to at least briefly discuss "genesis amnesia" and the critical examination of Oriental Studies offered by @tavak in "Tavakoli-Targhi, Mohamad. 2001. Refashioning Iran: Orientalism, occidentalism and historiography. Palgrave Macmillan".
3/5 I was glad to discover this morning, the wonderful 2019 themed issue of "History of Humanities", Vol 4(2), dedicated to "Classics of the Humanities" & edited, it seems, by @rensbod & Kasper Eskildsen. All texts are available for free:

And now a word from those behind the climate strikes. The We Mean Business co-founders et al. They thank you, for without you, there is no saving the ruling classes & the suicidal system killing us.

Let's take a look.

I wonder what adult taught @GretaThunberg to hate democracy? Wall Street wants to heard - as does We Mean Business et al. (And today sadly they were).

We are subjected to the branding "United Behind the Science" with a heavy emphasis from the face of the campaign (exploited Thunberg) to "listen to the science". Unite Behind the Science is not meant to protect Earth. It is meant to unleash a new era of privatization & plunder.

The #Hebrew word for "independence" comes from a root for "strength," by way of the word "bone."
Let me explain. ʕṢM is the root of "strength, power, superpower, enormous," and also Etsem, "bone." I guess that meaning 1/2
#language #etymology #YomHaatzmaut
#IndependenceDay
comes from the strength of bones.
This word also developed the meaning of "essence, self," bc bones are the essense of the body (as in, "in my bones", be'Atsmi = "myself"). Then came the word atsma'UT, "independence," i.e., reliance on oneself. 2/2

Why the word "#diversity" is counterproductive to building equitable, fair organizations: a thread, a rant.

First: #language has both literal and contextual / socially constructed meaning. For our purposes, I'm talking about the socially constructed meaning of "diversity".
In last year's State of Diversity Report, we found that people overwhelmingly associated the word "diversity" with two groups: White women and Black Americans. Even outside the U.S.

atlassian.com/diversity/surv…
Literally, Aussies were more likely to say that African American people were "diverse" than Indigenous Australians.

Let me tell you something specific: BLACK PEOPLE ARE NOT DIVERSE. Neither are women, Latinx folks, people with disabilities, etc.

Y'day Trump tried to squirm out of his kiss-up to Kim by saying media misinterpreted him about Otto Warmbier. Today he uses misinterpretation again to claim "Russia-if-you're-listening" was a joke. This weaponization of ambiguity is key to #Trump's #propaganda #language. @ddale8
@ddale8 Reupping my old piece on some features of Trump's propaganda language, including strategic use of ambiguity ("misinterpreted"). It's disarming b/c he does it so brazenly. His "authenticity" is shamelessness in vernacular. Neither this nor Russia is a joke. euromaidanpress.com/2016/10/27/989…
Days after Wikileaks’ dump, Trump was impressed & wanted more. Listen to his breathy “everything” immediately before the ask—not a joke—to Russia: “how little respect…that they would hack a major party & get everything. It would be interesting to see…RUSSIA IF YOU’RE LISTENING”

Joe Procaccino and Hugh Montgomery served under General Donovan, the director of the Office of Strategic Services, and 20 subsequent CIA Directors. Both entered the world of #intelligence on the strength of their foreign #language skills.
Joe was born in Italy and graduated with a major in #linguistics. He joined the OSS and continued on after the establishment of the CIA. Former Director George Tenet described Joe as “The Father of All Reports Officers” because he pioneered many procedures still in use today.
Hugh followed in his mother’s linguistic footsteps and learned eight languages fluently. He spent 24 years serving CIA overseas. In Moscow, Hugh was involved in handling the agent who many believe was the most valuable Russian asset ever run by the Agency, Colonel Oleg Penkovsky.

Brand-new and remarkable: #today, in a speech before #industry-representatives, chancellor Angela #Merkel used an old-fashioned, and,I think, INAPPROPRIATE,mathematical term to describe the #Brexit discussions..
.. in the #UK.

On 20180925, 9:50 CET, (cf. bdi.eu/der-bdi/termin…), chancellor Merkel said the following: "Wesentlich hängt es natürlich auch davon ab, was Großbritannien denn wirklich möchte. Auch da ist ja die Diskussion nicht so ganz eineindeutig [sic],
und, das muss ich..
.. allerdings sagen: Man kann nicht zum Binnenmarkt gehören, wenn man in EINEM Teil nur zum Binnenmarkt gehören will, aber in drei ANDEREN Teilen nicht zum Binnenmarkt gehört, und da müssen wir verschiedene, äh, vernünftige Wege [ rest drowned out by applause ]."

I suppose we can safely say that now #TheFrighteners have been so successfully and publicly put on a certain sector their combined angst will spew a diarrhoea of spin & warp whilst trying to use THAT VERY THING to generate $£Es Some with automated AdTech software already bought.
2/ Some bought by gormless companies, by mistake, some in full knowledge or partial knowledge of what it could do. It will be interesting as time goes on to see who apparently DIDN'T CARE about the likely instigation of its more negative 'dark' capabilities looking to 'side-step'
3/ or even 'wrong-foot' Irish & EU regulation standards, & possibly law. This too is a kind of #climatechange & #ClimateAction in itself, a would be mammoth untouchable iceberg of 'dominion' & 'control' being melted out into an ocean of citizens' scrutiny & advancement for change

Let's talk a little about #history, #language, and #languagechange. Many of the world's languages evolved from historical #protolanguages and have sister and cousin languages in their family, similar to how animals are classified.
For example, #English is a #WestGermanic language within the #IndoEuropean family.

Meanwhile, languages like #Basque are #isolates, meaning they have no known language relatives. There are some fringe theories about Basque, but none that are widely-accepted.
Take a look at your #language or languages you like on ethnologue.com. Comment below on any surprising facts you find or any questions that come up!

Earlier, the subject of correcting child #language came up. That's a perfect segue to patterns of #acquisition for kids & adults

Both groups of learners will tend to go thru predictable patterns of errors and stages, regardless of language. Let's discuss some examples
U-shaped behavior: this is when someone gets super good at something, gets worse for awhile, then improves again

#languageteachers see this a lot and it's frustrating when you think, wait, "Student X just used the past tense perfectly all quarter! What are they doing now?!"
Overapplication: Maybe your kid or student learned how to form plurals! Except now, everything is marked (or double marked) for plural and you may hear things like gooses, dogses, rices, etc

Myth #5 (last of today): Language does NOT alter your cognition/inherent world view.

Of course, #language effects your life the same way your #culture, home town, or environment does. But what it doesn't do is give you non-linear time powers like in #TheArrival.
A great (not jargon-y) episode of @lexiconvalley talks about this with @JohnMcWhorter as the host:
