After access to finance, another big obstacle to agroecology is *ACCESS TO #LAND & #WATER* 🌳🚰

📰This month we published 'The Added Value(s) of #Agroecology: Unlocking the potential for transition in West #Africa'

🔎 The research shows why land & water are fundamental 👇🏿

Rapid #population growth, urban sprawl, and land grabbing have created unprecedented pressures on #land and #water resources in West #Africa. Moreover, land laws, often rooted in the colonial era, have generally failed to protect customary tenure and land use.

In fact, between 2000 & 2012, some 3 million hectares of land were subject to large-scale #land acquisitions across nine West African countries.

🔎In #Senegal alone, 650,000+ ha were granted to investors between 2007 & 2016 – equivalent to 16% of the country's arable land❗️

I'd like to share the story of Iwuchukwu Amara Tochi, a young Nigerian footballer.

In 2007, at the age of 21, Tochi was hanged in #Singapore.
Tochi was arrested in Changi Airport in #Singapore on 27 November 2004. He was 18 years old.

He was later charged with importing not less than 727.02g of heroin. His case largely revolved around whether he could rebut the presumption clauses within the Misuse of Drugs Act.
What are these presumption clauses? First: if you have more than 2g of heroin, Section 17 of #Singapore's Misuse of Drugs Act (here:…) presumes that you are trafficking the drugs.

Had the pleasure of discussing with leading #tech activists on the use of #BigData in #elections in #Africa & the implications for #democracy. With elections in #Guinea #CôtedIvoire #Niger #Burkina #Ghana, the issue is high on the agenda! Thx @Info_Activism! Key resources below.

@Worldometers just added two new columns on their COVID-19 pandemic tracker – total tests and tests per million population - which reveals some very interesting info on some of the lesser known cases.

But also, per cap testing is actually the = in #Germany and #Italy.
@Worldometers Also shows the pitifully low lvls in even MICs that have some biotech capacity, e.g. #Brazil 258 tests/million, #India 84, #Bulgaria 81, #Philippines 48, #Senegal 12.

Compare to the #UK, lowest in Western Europe 2,560/million.

#Germany 10,962. #Norway 18,812. #Iceland 65,042.
@Worldometers East Asians actually do not stand out in this respect. #China no data. @SouthKorea 8,875. @HongKong 12,005. @singapore 6,666. #Taiwan only 1,488.

So, testing is not everything. Taiwan has been the most successful with containment, with only 355 confirmed cases.

It is time for one long #Coronavirus update. I have been resisting doing this as (1) I do not want to add to the hysteria & the panic & (2) I don't believe in doomsday predictions. Moreover, things have been moving so fast, who knows what's what. BUT it's time for real talk...
Overall, #Coronavirus (the outbreak of #COVID19) is REAL. The effects on your daily life from the fallout will be REAL. The impact society, economics, & politics in 2020 will be severe & REAL. None of this is Fake News. None of this should be downplayed. (2/
People who are trying to silence REAL discussion are doing a disservice to the public interest. This is a 9/11 & 2008 level event in terms of its impact on domestic & international dynamics. This thread is not about creating panic but encouraging a smarter response. (3/

Feb 6 is International Day of #ZeroToleranceDay for #FGM- female genital mutilation.

I was born in #Egypt, where FGM prevalence is 87.2% among all women aged 15-49.

Egypt has the greatest number of women and girls who have experienced FGM of any country in the world. A thread.
I have been obsessed with and writing about #FGM for decades. Too many women in my extended family have been subjected to this form of torture that serves no medical purpose whatsoever. FGM instead is about patriarchal control of female sexuality. #ZeroToleranceDay

#Egypt: THERE IS NO REVOLUTION unless the destruction of patriarchy is at its heart, unless consent & agency are at its heart.…
Too many women in my extended family have been subjected to FGM. It ended in our extended family just before I was born. I am lucky. It is a form of torture that continues today against too many girls in #Egypt, my country of birth. This must end.

Fuck the patriarchy.
It shatters my heart that so many women I love were subjected to #FGM. It shatters it more when I reflect on how much more the pain was knowing their mothers were complicit and what that exacts - of mothers and daughters.Fight the powers behind FGM at all levels, not just mothers

25mila euro.
Quell’orologio vale 25mila euro.

E corre dai Carabinieri.

The Ndop, or dze ndouop or nji Ndop cloth is a resist stitched, indido- dyed cloth of Bamileke origin in the Western region of #Cameroon. It is used ceremonies.

Designs representing culture & history are stitched in patterns on velvet fabric (originally). Today, it's evolved to satin & cotton fabrics.
