1/ I submit these observations...
@ChariteBerlin Jeffrey A. Goldstein, ehem.

Hypothesis: bipolar disorder is an Epstein–Barr virus‐driven chronic autoimmune disease – implications for immunotherapy
ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/P…
The high anti‐EBV antibody titres in BD might reflect a high number of EBV‐infected cells. It is interesting to note that clozapine, an atypical antipsychotic drug used to treat BD, inhibits EBV reactivation.
If BD is an EBV‐induced chronic autoimmune disease, there are two ways to control EBV infection specifically and therefore treat BD: (1) treatment with antiviral drugs; and (2) improving immunity to EBV.

I think ppl underestimate the role of reactivated #Lyme & Bartonella in #LongCovid (many dont know they have either). Lots of focus on #EBV may be missing this. When I interviewed @microbeminded2 recently (released soon) she said, “first things to rule out w LC are Lyme/ bart.”
There is a study published in @Nature that speaks to this here: nature.com/articles/s4159…
Lyme and bartonella are common, hugely misunderstood and under-recognized, can lie dormant, patients often asymptomatic, and like Covid, can be persistent.

When they get activated, all Hell can break loose.

Warum?
2/
Depressionen sind schwere Erkrankungen. Das will man verhindern.

After so many years of work and as a post Epstein-Barr virus infection #MECFS sufferer it makes me really happy that they have put our article on the cover of the August issue of Pathogens journal 👉:mdpi.com/2076-0817/11/8

Until recently nobody talked about post-viral syndromes (actually they should be called chronic infectious syndromes) and they left all of us patients isolated both at a health and social level. Unfortunately it took another virus like #SARSCoV2 to show us how viruses are ...(2/)
...capable of developing chronic diseases like #LongCovid . It is curious that for bacterial infections we use antibiotics but for viral infections we leave it to our immune system to manage to control it. This must change. (3/)

Was macht #SARSCoV2 so gefährlich?
-Gefässaffinität
-Systemerkrankung
-Superantigen
-Verminderung naiver T-Zellen
-Immunevasion
-rasante Evolution etc.
Evidenz bez. #SARSCoV2 zu untergraben.
So entstand das „mild“-Narrativ.

So after a bit of a delay, the @EU_Commission finally published the proposal of #RestoreNature. This is a major step forward in the implementation of the @EUEnvironment Biodiversity Strategy for 2030. However there is still some potential for improvement. A thread.
First a brief examination of the many positive aspects of the proposal. It’s ambitious but arguably achievable in most of its goals. It covers agricultural, forest, freshwater, marine and habitats with specific targets, indicators and approaches for each.
It is progressive over time, with targets for 2030, 2040 and 2050. And aims for a positive future for biodiversity as in the #naturefuturesframework @ipbes or the ideas of bending the curve of biodiversity loss, by Georgina Mace and others.

I’m noticing many friends, colleagues, acquaintances developing strange, new symptoms yet not attributing them to Covid.

This is eerily reminiscent of my experience w #Lyme; migrating, hard-to-describe, bizarre symptoms that no one has answers for that you just pray will stop.
I feel strongly this needs to be addressed and that the medical world needs to consider not only persistent Covid, but other common reactivated infections other than EBV. The # of tick-borne disease pts who crashed after Covid but got better w retreated shld not be discounted.
I would have my docs look for common persistent pathogens like #Lyme, #bartonella, #EBV, #babesia, etc and treat empirically if symptoms are suggestive w/o + tests, since testing for most of these (not EBV) is terrible.

Wie hängen eigentlich
#LongCovid
#PostCovid
#EBV
#MCAS und
#MECFS
zusammen?

2. Post (nach) Covid und Long (langes) Covid beschreibt also erstmal „nur“, dass Beschwerden „nach“ einer Covid-Infektion auftraten, bzw. „lange“ anhalten.

@sickanddamned @__ice9 @GemzME @Cov19longtail @VirusesImmunity @MBVanElzakker Walker hi - I very much disagree that #Borrelia or #EBV are typically ” long gone” in infected patients who develop chronic symptoms.
@sickanddamned @__ice9 @GemzME @Cov19longtail @VirusesImmunity @MBVanElzakker 2/ There is a large body of literature showing that even if such #organisms cannot be found in blood, they can persist in certain tissues or the central #nervous system where they are very hard to identify clinically
@sickanddamned @__ice9 @GemzME @Cov19longtail @VirusesImmunity @MBVanElzakker 3/ This is particularly obvious w/ EBV which is a #herpesvirus. Herpesviruses almost never “clear” after #infection, and symptom resolution is due to the immune system’s ability to contain the #virus in a non-replicating state

Hey! I have some thoughts on the paper below that attempts to position #ME/CFS as an “autoimmune disease” by associating 2 SNPs with very small odds ratios to differences b/t infectious & noninfectious disease onset (OR=0.54 & OR=0.64): frontiersin.org/articles/10.33…
2/ The team didn’t study the #ME/CFS immune response itself, but instead measured several common #SNPs associated w/ certain “autoimmune” conditions in their ME/CFS subjects. For example SNPs in the gene PTPN22 (connected to #Crohn’s, type 1 #diabetes etc)
3/ PTPN22 is a gene that, in simple terms, plays a role in regulating B and T cell activity. It’s actually just a gene that impacts the immune response (there doesn’t HAVE to be anything “autoimmune”-inducing about PTPN22 activity)

I study the illness #ME/CFS - a neuroinflammatory condition that usually begins w/ a #viral infection (sometimes a #respiratory infection!). I have argued for years that infecting #pathogens tied to the illness might persist in the central nervous system (CNS) of such patients
2/ While I realize this article is talking about acute #infection and #COVID19 - it explains that #SARS-CoV-2 “might infect neurons, raising questions about whether there could be effects on the brain that play a role in patients’ deaths:”
the-scientist.com/news-opinion/l…
3/ Matt Anderson, (one of my favorite Beth Israel pathologists!) states, “Some of the purely respiratory symptoms that you might attribute to the #disease, the inability to get air into the #lungs, might actually be defects in #respiration controlled by the #nervous system.”
