Let’s talk about #Immunity and #COVID19! In the narrative of an army and enemy.
Our immune system is like an army. Its mission? To protect us from enemies both foreign (viruses and bacteria) and domestic (diseases like cancer).
When the enemy (#SARSCoV2 for COVID19).. 1/n
..enters our body, our army’s first line of defence with army’s surveillance officer (helper T-Cells) are pressed into action. The enemy (viruses) can enter cells by infecting cells directly, leading to replication of virus inside the cells. During this process, 2/n
some of the viral proteins (enemy’s target body parts, usually the brain or heart is better for one-go kill) will be degraded into peptide fragments, which will be recognized by the army’s surveillance officer (presented on these helper T-Cells). 3/n

Do we know that there is 13 scientific evidence already that confer a direct association between #VitaminD deficiency & #COVID19 disease severity-mortality? Yet, no standard guidelines available at the national or international level for common people. THREAD must read and share.
1. Latest trial from Spain with 76 COVID 19 patients found that calcifediol (active form of Vit-D) reduced ICU admission & mortality in 50 patients treated w/calcifediol. only 1 among these 50 needed ICU admission in comparison to 13/26 w/out intervention.
sciencedirect.com/science/articl…
2. A cohort study reported that only 17.6% of patients required oxygen who received Vit-D, magnesium & B12 combination in comparison with 61.5% who didn't receive this combination.

IMPORTANT: #COVID19 and #VitaminB: Vitamin B plays a vital role in cell functioning, energy metabolism, activation of innate & adaptive immune responses, reduce cytokine levels, improves respiratory function, and can reduce the length of stay in hospital. ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/P…
1. Thiamine or B1: As antibodies, & importantly T-cells, are required to eliminate the #SARS_CoV_2 virus, thiamine deficiency can potentially result in inadequate antibody responses, and subsequently more severe. Factsheet attached.

2. Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin): Riboflavin & UV light has been shown to be effective against the MERS-CoV virus, could also be helpful against SARS-CoV-2. Also decreased the infectious titer of SARS-CoV-2 below the limit of detection in human blood.

Making a case for #VitaminD during #COVID19: This pandemic is affecting obese, diabetics, hypertensives, malnourished & immune suppressants. In India, 82% deaths due to COVID is related to co-morbidities.

VITAMIN D is related to all these.

1. Immunity: intechopen.com/books/vitamin-…
2. Diabetes: One of the major risk factors to contract the virus, severe disease progression & mortality. Prevalence of diabetes in India is ~12% and growing. Vitamin D definiciency is associated with impaired insulin sensitivity & glucose metabolism, i.e. occurrence of diabetes.
3. Obesity: obesity is most common cause of COVID 19 deaths. The prevalence varies from 11.8-31.3%. Vitamin D deficiency causes obesity and if you are obese, you are more prone to be Vitamin D deficient. This is a 2 way relationship. (1/2)

Role of #VitaminD in immunity during #COVID19.
1. Vit D is a major precursor for activation of T-cell (for any disease)
2. Vitamin D controls cytokines storm in COVID that causes blood clot & vascular damage of the organs like Kidneys, heart, Brain and ultimately death. Thread
STUDIES:
1. Review @SpringerOpen provides detail insight on role of Vitamin D in building immunity by modulating monocytes, denditric cells, T and B cells. link.springer.com/chapter/10.100…
2. Scientists @uni_copenhagen have discovered that Vitamin D is crucial to activating our immune defenses & w/out sufficient intake of the vitamin, T cells will not be able to react to and fight off serious infections in the body.

1/9 Big recent updates to #VitaminD #COVID19 evidence & thus now also to my review agingbiotech.info/vitamindcovid19: 3 highly cited preprints are out but even better studies replace them, including finally a large study of records from a big org. Main take-homes remain the same. Details:
2/9 2 preprints including very cited n=780 Indonesian study now withdrawn from SSRN. Another (Alipio's) suspected of being fraud. Details in section 9 of the review. All 3 removed from my 1pager summary agingbiotech.info/vitamindcovid1…. I now apply a new standard for preprints with data:
3/9 For preprints with D & C19 case data, I only include if author affiliations can be web-verified & authors have relevant pre-2020 publication records. With the 3 preprints removed, the evidence was still compelling. Now I've added 3 additional studies to the 1pager & review:

1 approach to understanding #covid19 infection is to examine co-morbidities & ask what's common?

Most prevalent Cov19 co-morbs:

1)↗️age
2)Hypertension
3)Diabetes
4)Cardiovascular disease
5)Kidney disease
6)Chronic respiratory disease (esp COPD)
8)Cancers
9)BMI>40
10)♂️>♀️ ImageImageImageImage
2/
These are diverse diseases & increasing age technically not a disease at all. However, there is at least 1 factor in common among all of the co-morbidities identified thus far:

INFLAMMATION
3/
A survey of the co-morbidities revealed another commonality; a close association w/ dysregulation of the pro-inflammatory, neutrophil-recruiting cytokine, IL-17A.

IL-17A is made by multiple immune cell types, including lung-resident innate lymphoid cells (ILC3s).

Folks keep citing this BMJ analysis to push for #vitaminD supps right now. It's not unreasonable to think about VitD but there's very imprecise language going around that "Vitamin D deficiency" is very widespread. This is hotly debated .bmj.com/content/356/bm…
Most folks are citing that many individuals are below 30ng/mL which is the threshold that @TheEndoSociety rec'd in 2011 following the 2010 @NASEM_Health report. There aren't trials treating folks with low -> 30+ng/mL to support the rec,it's mostly epi work and basic bio rationale
The BMJ paper comes in cause folks are saying that it supports a role for VitaminD suppvto reduce respiratory tract infections and may be useful against corona, and there's a high prevalence of VitD deficiency in the population. Makes sense?

Most people are vitamin D deficient. Studies show D staves off respiratory infection. Fact.

In my 20s I took a gram of vitamin C everyday, and didn't get sick despite being within a meter of coughing, infected people while giving guitar lessons.

.. I stopped because I developed acid reflux (most likely from continually eating spicy Indian and Thai food), but I'm going to drink a glass of 1 grsm C powder mix now, because I'm sure across a few days it *will* make a difference in my immune response.
I've been taking D supplements, presuming how little I'm outside and the darkness of winter, I'm likely deficient. I'll have to manage reflux somehow with the C for now.

Efficacy is unknown, but it's at least something.

Vitamin C is very well researched,
