Our analysis of materials released by @IESO_Tweets in response to our Freedom of Information Request

1. Thirty-two Ontario municipalities, representing almost 60% of Ontario’s population, have asked @ONgov to phase-out gas-fired electricity generation. 1/

2. According to Ontario’s Independent Electricity System Operator’s (IESO) October 7, 2021 (misleading) report,Decarbonization and Ontario’s Electricity System, phasing-out gas power by 2030 would raise residential electricity bills by 60% [page 1].

3. In response to a Freedom of Information Request (FOI), we obtained drafts of the IESO’s report. These drafts reveal the following facts:

Everything you need to know about the Green Hydrogen Policy that will be announced today by the Govt of 🇮🇳

A thread 🧵👇🏻
#GreenHydrogen #investing

What is Hydrogen?

• Hydrogen is the simplest & smallest element in the periodic table. However, it can be produced in different ways, and so are the emissions of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide & methane.

3 ways to make hydrogen are
• Grey
• Blue
• Green

• Grey and Blue Hydrogen-

Grey hydrogen is traditionally produced from methane (CH4), split with steam into CO2 – the main culprit for climate change. It is often called brown or black hydrogen instead of grey due to higher CO2 emissions.

Getting the whole world to #netzero #GHGs rapidly is going to be incredibly difficult. But given how strong and organized the #climateopposition is, we must distinguish #thesignalfromthenoise on which pathways are the most likely to succeed. A 🧵 on how I think about this 1/14
2/ First, we cannot rely on social and lifestyle change governed by new paradigms like degrowth to deliver in time for this #climatedecade. But if the movement delivers small reductions in energy or meat consumption, we need it…
3/ #Technologyandpolicy (and politics) need to do the heavy lifting. Can they deliver? Yes, but to effectively channel our efforts and fight off the opposition, we need to distinguish between main courses, side dishes and poison pills (frequently buried in the side dishes)

We have published an English summary of our hydrogen report:…
Key messages:
Hydrogen is necessary for #climateneutrality, but needs to be used in an efficient manner. Only #greenhydrogen produced from #renewable power can be produced sustainably.
Blue hydrogen is currently discussed as a bridging technology. In our opinion, it is not sustainable due to residual GHG emissions, insufficient short-term #CCS capacity and the risk of #fossil infrastructure lock-in. Therefore, it should not receive public subsidies.
Stringent certification is necessary to minimize the environmental footprint and social issues of hydrogen. This is both true for imports and European production.
An additionality criterion for renewables can ensure that green hydrogen does indeed reduce carbon emissions.

Good that #SaudiArabia & #UAE have pledged #NetZero but #GCC total domestic emissions are only 2.4% of world’s. The #EU needs to focus on the emissions they export, mostly to #China, I argue how: 2/
As shown by the #SaudiGreenInitiative & #MiddleEastGreenInitiative + #UAE willingness to host #COP 28, the #GCC leaders now see a political value in embracing the #climate agenda. This paper described what each #GCC country is actually *doing* about it: 3/

Abro breve 🧵
Y respondo:

Decarbonisation requires making fossil energy more expensive – that’s the whole purpose of carbon pricing. Well, here we have expensive gas & oil! Will this help the energy transition?

Thread! 🧵✍️
The answer is highly unclear because:
1/ higher energy prices promote efficiency, but...

2/ it is now harder to add more price pressure to consumer bills, and

2/ gas prices have pushed electricity prices up, so the relative price of low-carbon energy has not improved
2/ Higher electricity prices bring no good news for the environment as the #GreenDeal relies on electrification to decarbonize polluting sectors of the economy

Expensive electricity will delay much needed investments in electric mobility, electric heat pumps, #GreenHydrogen….

#India recently announced the National Hydrogen Mission & there's growing interest among leading industry players in #greenhydrogen.
But why is green H2 significant for India's #energytransition?
In a new study, we examined how #greenhydrogen can help in cleaner steelmaking. We found that:
▶️9% blend of #green H2 in steel making would ⬇️India's emissions footprint by 68%
▶️This #greensteel would be competitive with upper range of conventional steel costs at current rates
If #greenhydrogen costs fell to 1.3-2.2 USD/kg from the current 4-4.5 USD/kg, steelmaking based entirely on #green H2 could break even with #coal-based processes in #India. Globally, electrolyser manufacturers have already committed to a green H2 cost of 1.5 USD/kg by 2025.

Another heatwave grips Washington, Oregon & British Columbia. Climate change - long predicted + denied - is here.

We know it's time to transition off fossil fuels.

And, all year, @invw's Decarbonizing #Cascadia series is exploring how we can.…
We launched in January explaining how a region w/ official goals to slash emissions and the means to do it just keeps getting dirtier. @invw analyzed the latest data, showing that Washington, Oregon and BC's emissions rose by 5, 6 and 7% b/w 2013 & 2018.…
We also profiled #Cascadia's activists, such as the @youthvgov litigants suing govts for the right to a livable future and campaigners eroding Big Oil, Gas and Coal's political power. @robertmcclure showed how activists bottled up fossil export proposals.…

The UK must focus on #GreenHydrogen for climate leadership – fossil-based ‘blue’ hydrogen is not zero emissions and should not be classed as ‘low carbon’. Public funds and support should only be used to develop zero emissions fuel & technologies. [2/9]
Scaling green hydrogen requires parallel rapid growth in renewable energy – tapping offshore wind potential – as well as electrification, efficiency & circular economy. These measures should be central to any zero-emissions strategy, regardless of the role of hydrogen. [3/9]

The world's largest investor in #RenewableEnergy, @NextEraEnergy, sees US wind costs declining by 10% annually for the next four years, so even as subsidies cease, #wind will be the low cost source of new supply. #coal can't compete. 🇺🇸✅…
And @NextEraEnergy expects ~10% annual solar deflation to continue as well, remaining the second lowest source of new electricity in the US.
And batteries are seeing deflation of ~16% pa, meaning 4 hour storage will cost ~US$4-9/MWh by 2022, challenging peaking applications for fossil gas (solar already destroys that antiquated idea of gas base-load).
Other than @ScottMorrisonMP, who thinks a gaslit recovery works?!
