Megalopolis x #Russia: Total War by Pepe Escobar…

After careful evaluation, the Kremlin is rearranging the geopolitical chessboard to end the unipolar hegemony of the “indispensable nation”.

Operation Z is the first salvo of a titanic struggle: three decades after the fall of the USSR, and 77 years after the end of WWII, after careful evaluation, the Kremlin is rearranging the geopolitical chessboard to end the unipolar hegemony of the “indispensable nation”.

(cit Danilo #Taino, @Corriere)

We just started our @Ceres_Dev course on how political regimes shape our research practices. Very exciting discussions w/ PhD students at @issnl & wider NL students reflecting on various ethical and methodological concerns in field research.
(1) We began by examining the state of #fieldwork in social sciences & development studies. In restrictive environments, field research is more complicated & risks for personal security higher. YET disciplinary incentives simply do not encourage valuing time & energy needed.
(2) Yet, policy relevant & ground breaking work often require good fieldwork, not just theoretical rigour. So we need to do better at encouraging fieldwork based data collection.

What does the war in Ukraine mean for #Eurasia and Russia's regional integration aspirations? Well, there are no good options for the Kremlin with Russia's influence diminishing over time.
Thread 1/5
So far out of nations of Central Asia and the Caucasus we have a group of relative neutral countries: Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. Baku and Nur Sultan sent aid to Ukraine but only as a diplo gesture -both need Russia's good will. Uzbekistan is a bit more direct.
Armenia, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan are staying quite and abstaining from publicly commenting on war.
Georgia is the only country that voted for UN resolution condemning Russia's war in Ukraine but at the same time it continues to engage in trade with Russia.

#Equinox is also the moment when the incoming energy balance shifts from the Southern to the Northern Hemisphere, and it was marked this year with some extraordinary temperature anomalies in the Arctic and Antarctic. Both caused by atmospheric rivers.

#ClimateChangeNow thread... ImageImage
And this year the northern hemisphere #extremeweather season has a Herald, a designated tropical disturbance which the JTWC had thought might become a cyclone. Whilst early this morning a cyclone formation warning was cancelled, the storm appears to not be giving up so easily.
This @zoom_earth animation shows the last six hours of explosive convection which picked up quickly after the storm moved back over the sea in the Bay of Bengal.

⚡️ Head of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service, Sergey Naryshkin (key points):

• The more successfully the Russian special military operation in #Ukraine develops, the stronger the hysteria becomes in the #UnitedStates and other #NATO countries.
• The masks have been dropped. The #West is not just trying to surround #Russia with a new "Iron Curtain". We witnessed attempts to destroy our state, attempts of its "cancellation".
#NATO bombed #Yugoslavia under the pretext of rescuing the "unfortunate" #Kosovo Albanians, and now their leader Hashim Thaci himself is on trial for war crimes and trafficking of human organs.

If you are in Europe or the US, you might have not heard that #Russian troops "intervened" in #Kazakhstan where the president gave orders to "kill without warning" today. #KazakhstanProtest #Kazachstan (wrong spelling, btw) 🧵
To sum it up, the poor revolted against the reign of Nur-Sultan Nazarbaev, the former president who stayed in power for 30 years, and his puppet, a current president. The army (more or less) sided with the people.
In response, and on the current Kazakh president's request, Putin sent "peacekeeping" paratroopers. Dozens are killed. Many political analysts are commenting on the dangerous situation. However, I have not seen anyone mention an important factor: Eurasianism.

#Russia/n deployment to #Kazakhstan within CSTO mandate - THREAD
1/ Eurasian politics can be interesting:
Over the past 3 days the country that seemed the strongest in #CentralAsia almost turned into a failed state. #Putin sent troops to prop up the ruler who endorsed "multi-vector" foreign policy...
2/ ..and the decision had to be pronounced by #Armenia/n PM who himself came to power thru protests and who refused to turn to CSTO at the time his army was losing to #Azerbaijan

Happy to share my new publication!📚

In 2010, 13 of Russia's ethnic republics had presidents, before a law required them to change the title. As of 2021, only Tatarstan's remains. What can this tell us about identity and center-region relations in #Russia? 🧵
#polisci #Eurasia
Quite a lot, I suggest! For one thing, a common perception of post-Yeltsin Russia is of a dominant centralizing government and compliant regions. In reality, there's more bargaining and contestation than this suggests.
Both Moscow and Kazan have treated the issue of Tatarstan's presidency quite delicately, even when the title contradicted federal law.

(1/3) In Italy now, going on to #Kazakhstan for screening premiere at 2 hours of our documentary, #QAZAQHistoryoftheGoldenMan, which is a total of 8 hours, on Kazakhstan and its ruler of the last 30 years, #NursultanNazarbayev. Image
(2/3) Call #Nazarbayev what you want -- dictator, strongman, tyrant, founder, you’ll find him to be a modest man explaining the #Soviet Empire’s demise and his important country’s transition to an independent nation, including its disposal of its nuclear weaponry. Image
(3/3) #Nazarbayev also outlines #Kazakhstan’s nomadic history and the technological future of #Eurasia -- and it’s a bright future, in my mind. Go East, young man. Directed by @lopatonok, who did #UkraineonFire and #RevealingUkraine. Trailer linked here.

2/Thus, South Asia will witness growing competition between China and India over ‘hearts and minds’ in each of these countries, even as there might be diplomatic efforts towards the normalisation of relations between New Delhi and Islamabad in the future.
3/ Logically, the US regards India as a significant and reliable partner in creating a counterweight to China’s overwhelming presence in South and Southeast Asia.

I’m particular I liked your characterisation of #DragonBear as a “temporary asymmetric relationship”. But some questions too:
@vtchakarova @amlivemon @Halsrethink @LibrariumViews @JamesGRickards @gbponz @BaldingsWorld @C_Barraud @BcnFox @MacaesBruno @chigrl @RobertMCutler @GrayConnolly @DrPippaM @Kostian_V @wangxiangweihk @IndoPac_Info @michaeltanchum 1) is the main common denominator of #Dragonbear really the exclusion of #US & #EU from #Eurasia (all very Mackinder!)? Are #China’s & #Russia’s #geopolitics the same? Does not Russia aim to exclude while China aims to bridge?

I spent 5 years dealing with Chinese diplomacy, and it has nothing to learn from Russia. I suspect the day’s when China learnt from Russian military and military technology are also long gone
