Tyre dust: the ‘stealth pollutant’ that’s becoming a huge threat to ocean life

Plastic in the depths: Scientists spent decades on the trail of a mystery toxin killing #Salmon en masse. Mystery of the mass deaths seemed to occur after heavy rains #pnw #yvr…
first real breakthrough happened when they tested actual runoff collected from a nearby road and exposed test salmon to it. The fish died within hours
Tested this product @environmentca🤔
..carefully shaved tiny fragments of tyre & soaked them in water. “When we tested the tyres it killed all the fish".. culprit a toxic chemical 6PPD-quinone, product of the preservative 6PPD, added to tyres to stop them breaking down #Plastic

According to the LOC, "In 1844, presidential candidate James K. Polk urged an aggressive stance with regard to ownership of the land below the 54th parallel. The slogan “Fifty-four Forty or Fight” became a rallying cry of the Polk campaign..."
"... Two years later, the U.S. and Great Britain signed the Oregon Treaty setting the Canadian-American border at the 49th parallel and granting the United States territory that included present-day ID, OR, and WA. In 1848, Congress designated this...the “OR Territory.” (LOC)

Record #heat. Tough weekend in the #PNW. Seattle=City with #1 lowest AC. For sure - heat-related illness and deaths to happen. what to do? I share a #tweetorial about lessons learned from @FortBenning -when I was CMO of the hospital there.

Please retweet if useful. #medtwitter
In Georgia, our medical team had to tackle issues of heat illnesses - from heat exhaustion, heat strokes and exercise associated hyponatremia (#EAH) - and tragically the deaths too. We re-learned lessons lost from the past and learned new ones.
Lesson 1: Young, healthy, and fit people die in the heat.

There's no age discriminator for heat stroke. Heat that cannot be dissipated will kill anyone eventually. Heat comes from mainly two sources - the environment and the person; especially if exerting oneself.

#Cascadia's climate activists have had global impact, yet emissions keep rising here in #Washington #Oregon & #BC.

#BritishColumbia set the pace when #Cascadia's govts set initial climate targets >10yrs ago. In 2021 #Washington and @JayInslee step way out with a 95%/net-zero target for 2050, tough interim goals, and a detailed strategy to get there.…
#Washington's strategy is backed by sophisticated modeling from Seattle-based CETI and SF-based EER.

Note: EER's EnergyPATHWAYS tool underpins the recent multi-path US #decarbonization visions 👇from @JesseJenkins et al @Princeton's @AndlingerCenter.…

Heroes American Cafe Owner John Jackson: “It’s extremely tough, probably the toughest time in small business history right now. Just making it day today is tough enough without $3,000 worth of glass (damage) on top of it. #koin6news #PDX #PNW #Oregon #Portland #protests #riot
John Jackson: “To the business owners & the people, hang in there. We are all in this together. This type of violence makes no sense. It only hurts the small guys like myself. We are just here providing a service to the community.” #koin6news #PDX #PNW #Oregon #Portland

When I talk to people in the #pnw who were really supportive of BLM in June, for them the message is now getting convoluted by the ongoing violence and looting in Portland and -to a lesser extent- Seattle. It’s hard for them to separate the two. (1/2)
I think that’s partially the responsibility of news. It wasn’t til I spoke with portlanders in the know that I found which Black activists I should be following to understand what BLM is still doing in Portland. A lot of local orgs just cover what happens after dark. (2/2)
Ps if you want good coverage of Portland, follow @OPB.

The Seattle metro region and the whole #PNW are being severely affected by the #COVID19outbreak. In >1 month we went from "there is a small cluster of cases in a nursing home" to "we need to lock down the whole region to avoid worst case scenarios" (not happened yet) 1/13 ImageImageImageImage
The (social) media frenzy is impressive. Even Facebook and others are worried their servers / data centers may not be able to cope with demand for long (…). We have used social media for good - checking in on friends and family all over the world. 2/13
While this is a challenging time, there are many positive things to be thankful for. Personally, I am enjoying having more time with my young boys (4 and 6 yo) and wife. the boys are curious and scared about the whole story - but 3/13
