A🧵about the pursuits of #ClimateJustice in India & beyond! #COP27 Image
The central question we seek to answer here: What does it take to pursue the aspirations of climate justice in countries like India, with longstanding social & economic inequalities and a large population of climate-vulnerable populations? 2/ #LossAndDamage #Inequalities #COP27
Compensations for Loss & Damage/climate reparations is a crucial first step. While civil society leaders (h/t @SaleemulHuq) fight that battle valiantly, we must ask what would it take to realize #ClimateJustice in the trenches of the climate crisis. We focus on this question 3/n

The annual @CareQualityComm #StateOfCare report’s out today, just in time to focus minds as decisions are made about future health and care funding. Here’s my thread, picking out some of the nuggets that have got me thinking. 🧵 1/10… Cover of CQC report: The state of health care and adult soci
2/10 Overall #StateOfCare message: gridlocked care, growing risks of harm and a need to tackle inequalities. Summarised here in the foreword. Stresses need for workforce investment at system level. Rightly says need to understand people’s experiences overall not in isolation. Text of first page of report foreword.Text of second page of report foreword.
3/10 Good to see this reminder in #StateOfCare that ICSs need to use insights from local people to drive and track improvement. Key role for #Healthwatch and #VCSFE organisations there, I’d say. Very relevant to the need for shared learning described in section on collaboration. The aim of ICSs is to deliver joined-up care that better meeAlthough services were under great pressure, we have raised

Planners, #policymakers, #gis and #dataviz people of twitter, @TrivikV @mikhailsirenko and I released a new #opensource project: CityAccessMap. It's an open source #webapplication that visualizes urban #accessibility insights for almost every city in the globe 🌐.
The web-app uses #OpenData to visualize access to a variety of #essentialservices. By considering where people live, CityAccessMap measures how much of a city's population has access to things like transit/bus stops or health facilities. The app is entirely customizable.
The user can switch services on and off. Here's an example of accessibility to pharmacies, clinics, hospitals and other health services in Lima, Perú.

The @NHS_RHO is a do-tank not a think-tank #RHOConf22.

It’s a place where things get done @Voa1234

How an org values it’s ethnic minority staff is a good barometer of how well patients are likely to feel irrespective of skin colour

It’s about #leadership
Now @DrHNaqvi starting with a quote from #JRRTolkein #RHOConf22

We must break down #inequalities

The @NHS_RHO set up to:
Synthesise insight
Inform policy
Enable transformation

Work programme uses global data driven evidence

Year 1 report:
What drives racial inequities? @D_R_Williams1 #RHOConf22

Socioeconomic status SES matters
In the UK for every £1 a white person has, a Black/Bangladeshi has 10p

But after SES taken into account, it’s about race
Not about “trying harder”
Neighbourhood opportunity matters

The foreign/non-dom billionaire-owned UK "news" media exists to protect & prioritise the interests of a handful of greedy, cruel, & grotesquely wealthy elites against #SocialDemocracy. But don't take my word for it, listen to Leonard Trelawny Hobhouse & Albert Einstein: ImageImage
But what is 'social democracy'?

If you listened to representatives of the UK Govt, the right-wing UK media, or any of the usual 'outrage porn' culture war extremists, you'd think it was some kind of Marxist plot against humanity, because that's what voters are told to believe. Image
In reality, social democracy is the most successful, fair, & sensible political ideology to have come to prominence in the twentieth century, resulting in a sensible 'mixed economy', improvements in quality of life, & the reduction of wealth & opportunity #inequalities. Image

Is #NHS #dentistry beyond crisis? Like rest of #primarycare, .@NHSEngland in its dominant position as market regulator has failed to manage the market. #NHS manages contracts, funding, nhs regulations, clinical policy, nhs #tech +entry & exit of workforce .@guardian 1/19
There will be those out there that’ll say but number of registrants has increased. That’ll suit nhs policy makers. Doesn’t account for people leaving NHS, working less hours for NHS, taking a career break or going into private practice or people taking up other careers 2/19
Certainly my experience in London is that many dentists don’t want stress of high needs #nhs practice. Are less likely to work full time & don’t want to work on abysmal NHS rates on offer in places like London. Many won’t be able to pay their rent /indemnity/ travel costs 3/19

Looking forward to what should be a very timely discussion on the IFS's latest research geographic inequalities in labour market outcomes & how this may present challenges for the Govt's #LevellingUp agenda #IFSEvents
First @PJTheEconomist and the @NuffieldFound's @markfranks give a brief overview of the IFS #DeatonReview into inequalities, and why the Nuffield Foundation gave the review its financial support #IFSEvents
Franks recognises that #LevellingUp will only be delivered if we focus on multiple factors of #inequalities - age, gender, education, public services, jobs - not just place #IFSEvents

A fascinating conversation between Jan-Werner Müller
@Princeton and Rahel Jaeggi @HumboldtUni on what is needed to (re)democratise our #democracies.
These are my key insights on what can be deduced from this for a strong progressive strategy 👇🏽
As progressives, we have to be careful to use the concept of democratic #regression to describe the status quo of democracies. Rather than a regression, we currently witness an inability of democratic institutions to respond to systemic crises such as the climate crisis.
There are two central aspects that constitute this crisis: On the one hand, key social institutions such as central banks, financial markets or schools lack democratic ordering principles and with that democratic legitimacy.

A #THREAD on free-market fundamentalist ex-banker Sajid Javid's recent grotesque & condescending speech to the opaquely funded free market think tank, the Centre for Social Justice: "The hidden costs of #COVID19: the social backlog"…
The 'Centre for Social Justice' is another opaquely funded free-market think tank, co-founded by IDS, Tim Montgomerie, Mark Florman & Philippa Stroud, specialising in generating moral panics which demonise the poor using 'decision-based evidence making'.…
He starts off with condescending & insensitive remarks: "I’VE faced some challenges in MY time in government. The crisis of rough sleeping. The tragedy of #Grenfell. The injustice of #Windrush" - disgraceful episodes, caused primarily by deregulation & the Culture War Tory Govt.

🧵 - on #Obesity #inequalities who they affect most and what can be done about it.
All the findings are in this new @TheKingsFund report, so let's pull out some of the key issues 👀👀…
Numbers of people who are obese are⬆️ rising in real and relative terms.
Since early 2000s overall overweight prevalence topped out at ~2/3 of adults, BUT - underlying trend is ⬆️ obese ppl as a proportion of overweight.
While the national picture is clear, it masks some deep inequalities...
➡️8 point gap in male obesity between most & least deprived.
➡️17 point gap for women.
➡️Women from most deprived experience the very highest rates at 39%.
And... the gap has widened significantly.

Multiple information sources influenced #women’s #breastcancer risk and agency narratives.

Social, cultural & experiential information were all included.

#Workplace & #environmental exposures & socio-cultural aspects of work & environment were critical to the narratives.

Perceptions of #inequality: 🇲🇽🇧🇷🇺🇸🇿🇦

A report from @AFD_France lays out one of the biggest problems for people interested in reducing #inequalities: Inaccurate public #perception of the problem.
(1/x)… Image
“The research finds that individuals have a relatively accurate perception of #poverty, but they substantially overestimate the prevalence of #affluence."

This research shows that people struggle to understand the extent and the depth of the #economic gulfs between us.
(2/x) Image
The fantasy that people can bootstrap their circumstances and achieve some sort of affluent Dream - as has been shown repeatedly - is a myth reinforced by selective, highly publicized examples.

Thrilled to announce our new paper by Victoria Junquera and Adrienne Grêt-Regamey, "Assessing livelihood vulnerability using a Bayesian network: a case study in northern #Laos”, is now out in @ecologyandsociety1… #openaccess #WomenInSTEM. Short thread👇
This work analyzes the effect of #cashcrop production on livelihood #vulnerability, which we define in terms of the probability distribution of household income.
We use a #Bayesian network to estimate the probability distribution of household income, conditional on biophysical (e.g., yield), household (e.g., agricultural land), and commodity price variables.

1. #digital #energy governance challenge number 2 - distributional effects and #inequalities. An enormously complex area that's hard to summarize in a tweet - really a whole PhD in its own right. (If you're doing this please say hello!) Full report -
2. Key point: digitalisation holds the potential to change the nature, spread and scale of existing energy distributional challenges, as well as introducing new ones. We must address this to facilitate a #JustTransition to #netzero.
3. Note: there is much more to be explored around this challenge that goes beyond my resources/knowledge. I'm looking for UK-based experts to participate in my second phase of research - if interested please contact me or sign up via the link in the report.
