A new report from the LSE’s 'International Inequalities Institute' examines the who, what, & where of UK ‘non-doms’, revealing a complex story of the current British economic elite beyond the attention-grabbing headlines about Russian oligarchs.
#Sociology often faces criticism - especially from the right-wing press & right-wing politicians.

I'm sure it's not a coincidence that sociology is one of the few academic disciplines to have taken Global inequality very seriously, for a very long time.…
'The UK’s ‘non-doms’: Who are they, what do they do, & where do they live?', by Arun Advani, David Burgherr, Mike Savage & Andy Summers', examines & analyses the historical legacies, as well as the contemporary configuration, of global inequality.

What a paper.
Summary of what they found:
“Fox lies to its viewers and that makes them have radical rightwing views.”

Notably, just a FEW WEEKS of getting them off Fox made them less radical.
For years, @BrainwashingDad has been telling people (and illustrating in a book and a movie) that Fox radicalizes people.

But liberals and elites have been saying “No- Fox just tells people what they want to hear.”

Will this paper be enough to prove that Fox changes people? /2
@BrainwashingDad What to do about Fox? There are actions we can take.
1. CONFIRM Gigi Sohn right now. Yesterday even. The FCC regulates corporate media and they can do things to blunt Murdoch reach.
2. Do whatever you can to get your family off Fox, and undermine Fox in every conversation.

Are you starting your career as an assistant professor and guiding #PhD students for the first time?
Here are a few mentoring tips from the perspective of a current PhD student that may help you.

@AcademicChatter @PhDVoice @PhD_Genie #research @PhDsofIndia
1) Never keep lab meetings on Monday, Tuesday and weekends. Putting on Monday or Tuesday will force them to work on weekends. Respect the social life of PhD students. It's also good for their mental wellbeing.

2) Regularly talk about the long term and short term impact that the PhD project is going to produce, like patents, high impact journal papers as well as the societal impact. This will motivate the PhD scholars to work harder, smarter and better.

Who else has experienced an abuse of power in academia? Please share. Eons ago a diss advisor stole my work. I reclaimed it in 2nd ed of Servants of Globalization. Arlie Hochschild rephrased my concept and named it the #carechain, used my data, none of her own. #SOCAF #sociology
For years, until now, my theory is haunted by the assumption that my advisor helped me developed it. She did not. I sound like a bona fide research assistant in her writings when in fact the work she is using was pulled and rephrased from my dissertation #metoo
It is important I did this/do this as a senior woman of color scholar because I am not the first and definitely not the last to experience this in academia.

My new article "On Track or Derailed? Race, Advanced Math, and the Transition to High School" in @SociusJournal summarized in tweet form.

A thread:

#Sociology #Soctwitter #mathequity #BlackandSTEM…
Taking advanced math in HS influences academic success, what careers we pursue, and how much $ we make. Studies find racial gaps in who takes Calculus in HS & Algebra I in MS, but there is little research on race and adv math course taking during the transition to HS. 2/
This study uses national data to examine adv math course taking in 9th grade for students on the accelerated track who took Alg I+ in 8th grade and students on the standard track who took <Alg I. I also look at the role of performance factors & parents, teachers & counselors 3/

Completing the service year and getting back home wasn't so easy. I came from a home where neighbours are SEE FINISH. So it wasn't a matter of negotiation for me to know that I wasn't returning home to my parents after Ajuwaya
Not like I didn't try to. I did but got my fingers burnt. Young chaps in the streets were often referred to see me for their difficult home works. One young girl nearly rubbished my degree when she brought WORD PROBLEM mathematics assignment. It was really a problem.

1) The streets of ancient Rome were chaotic and rowdy - the philosopher Seneca lived next to raucous public baths and had to learn to live with the constant row: "As I study in my apartment overlooking the baths I'm surrounded by every type of racket..."

There is great #progress under @narendramodi @PMOIndia, on the issue of retaining Public Sector only in Strategic Sectors & in limited numbers (1-4), so as to fully benefit from privatization & private competition. 👏👏. I hope all elements are formally approved within a year.

Hi #twitterstorians this is part 3 of our thread on #Srinivas work. We focus on his views on #anthropology as a discipline linked to the nation. If you would like to see more about #Srinivas writings you can check our blog on #rememberedvillage 👇…
#Srinivas considered that #anthropology was a #colonial tool of governance that used used to 'divide and rule'. His views on the #census as a political tool anticipated the views of scholars such as #Cohn and #Dirks
However, for #Srinivas this was a doubled edged sword. Indian nationalists used the categories politicized by colonial rulers to 'discover' India's past and to create myths in the struggle for #independence

Hi #twitterstorians! This is the second installment on #Srinivas. Today we focus on his concept of #sanskritization
which was key in the development of Indian #anthropology and #sociology. This is part of our history of concepts. @UoMhistdept @LeedsUniHistory @CSMCH_Edin #AHRC
#Srinivas coined the term #sanskritization in the late 1940s and early 1950s while researching the Coorgs of South India. #Sankritization was used as a way to explain how certain groups like the Lingayats of Karnataka had move up in a caste structure that was supposed to be fixed Image
The main idea behind #sanskritization is that lower castes groups imitate and adopt Sanskritic culture and values. Along with economic and political power, eventually, #sanskritization would translate into ritual power too. This would make lower caste groups to move up socially

Some excellent research has been published over the past few years on #policing and #militarisation that, given the recent events in the #US (and beyond), and subsequent debates on policing, deserves to be curated. A thread on some relevant scholarship from around the world. 1/n
Let's begin with the #US, where @Peterkraska has guided much of the contemporary research on the militarisation of civilian policing. Here's an article by Kapeller & Kraska on normalising police militarisation (a response to Garth den Heyer’s critique)… 2/n
den Heyer had challenged the works of Kraska and others who showed how policing was becoming more militarised in the #US. den Heyer argued instead that the establishment of SWAT/PPUs was ‘a natural progression’ in the evolution of American policing:…) 3/n

Study by myself, @viveksck, Sebastian Munoz-Najar Galvez, Bryan He, @jurafsky, &Dan McFarland. We study the diversity-innovation paradox: Diversity breeds innovation, yet underrepresented groups that diversify organizations have less successful careers within them. 2/n
Does the diversity-innovation paradox hold for scientists as well? To answer this question, we use text analysis and machine learning as well as US census and dissertations of more than 1.2 million recipients of doctoral degrees from 1977 to 2015. 3/n
